Yep seems the new Euro 5 standard fuel consumption for diesels have been excellent especially with higher KW ratings

1. BMW 5 Series 2L 130kw 380Nm 5.3km/100Km

3. Mondeo MC 2L 120Kw 340Nm 6.2Km/100Km

I assume heavier MA model with smaller engines like my 96kw suffer the weight penalty I stand to be corrected I thought the Tax [LCT]is lower on diesel cars if they can achieve less than 7L/100Km

LCT threshold is $57,466 but rises to $75,375 where a vehicle achieves 7L/100 or less.

Thanks everyone for your answers and comments. It looks like the average would be around 7 l/100 kms which is the same as the combined economy rating of 7.1.

The numbers from the MC owners show that the new model is more economical. I should have run 2 polls for the MA/MB and the MC.

Mine has now settled at about 6.7 after 1,400 kms. I've done 800 kms since my last fill, and the DTE is over 200 km!

my mates 2008 merc c class 1.9L 4 cyl turbo diesel is rated for for 125kw and 400nm. it has more torque then the old 5L ford windsor motors and only uses 6.7L/100km. it will also go from 0-100kmh in about 8 secs in auto (1550kg car). the diesel also sounds pretty sporty when driving it, nothing like a truck diesel. i own an EB V8 stock, and i can say the 1.9L merc ****** all over my ford in speed in a straight line and in turns, and uses about only 40% fuel that the v8 requires.
Diesel technology has come a long way. Ford should put a turbo diesel in the falcon, as most falcon drivers are used to good torque, and only the 2% tryhard/loser majority use it for driving fast (it is not a sports car). a diesel option will also give a much better fuel economy then the current engine options. instead ford are going for the dud small petrol engine option (4cyl turbo) that will have similar real world economy figures to the 3L commodore. just you wait people, it will be advertised well, but the real world figures will be 30% out of the factory specs of the fuel economy when driven in the way aussies drive, just like the holden figures have been proven to be by leading car magazines etc.

kpcart - I would agree with your assessment of the expected performance from the turbo 4cyl Falcon. I can't see Falcon drivers accepting a 4cyl in the loved car - but a diesel, whilst different, is a not a <beep> 4 cylinder. Refer Commodore VB/VC range from 1980s - poor reception.
Falcon is a heavy car.
Mondeos, on the other hand, are different beasts altogether. No historical baggage to overcome re drivetrains.

But the diesel option for the Falcon would be the V6 that is going into the Territory. You'd really wonder why Ford are running two engineering programs to fit different engines to the Falcon and the Terri...

TDCI MC Titanium after 1.5 tank fulls, last tank I got 8.55l /100 km with stop start city traffic - 32km/h average. (Convers+ was showing 8.0 litres). Did 760km on a tank before I filled up (64.9 litres) so still had 5 litres to go before empty. So would have got 800+ km's! Very pleased with that. Still running in so should see better figures over time.
Just a note: use real figures on this forum, not Convers+ figures (or give both as a comparison). Uk Forum advises that the figures on Convers are typically wrong.

I re-filled my first tank after 584kms (needed a full tank for a weekend drive into the country). Only about 100kms of that was on freeway conditions, the rest was on anything from 40 - 80 kph roads. Used 37.2 litres for 15.7 kms per litre or 6.37 litres per 100 kms. Bloody fantastic for a first tank, imo.

Have done another 500kms on that aforementioned weekend drive (and that was a fully laden car with pram, two suitcases and baby, of course) and the computer says there's another 600kms plus left in the tank. Will report those results later this week when I refill again before our drive from Wollongong to Melbourne. That will be 800 kms on freeway conditions and I'll report those early next week after refilling in Melbourne.

So far, so excellent!

OK the new MC on a tight engine has given me 6.8 around town and 5.3 on the freeway. I expect that to improve as it waers in. Power is up a lot.....

Not getting your figures - damn. Are you in the LX, Zetec or Titanium. Wagon or Hatch. Mines a Hatch Titanium. Last 3 Figures (Convers+ figures in brackets):
1. 8.56 L/100 (8.0) 32km/h average
2. 7.37 L/100 (7.6) 35km/h
3. 8.24 L/100 (8.3) 31km/h

As you can see the Convers figures aren't always accurate. Looks like you're calculating the figures and not using Convers.


For those trying to calculate Fuel consumption: (litre's/trip km) x 100 = Litres / 100 km.

They are my manual calcs, not Convers. Nearly empty on current tank, will be refilling tomorrow. Will post results.

I refilled today, 63.62 litres for 915kms travelled; 14.38 kms/L, 6.95 L/100. That trip included driving to/from the Blue Mountains so it was a combo of highway, freeway and slow, winding roads.

My next big test will be on Monday when I do 800 kms on the Hume Highway to Melbourne.

This just came to mind, but it's probably difficult to compare my driving experience with anyone that lives in a major city. Whilst I do some driving in Sydney, I don't live there (live near Wollongong, similar to Geelong) thus most of my suburban driving is in more free-flowing traffic, not the constant stop-start that is experienced on most Sydney roads eg M5, Parramatta Road.

Thursday we drove to Sydney from Ballarat with 2 adults 2 kids plus a big dog and two eskies did 990km on 65.73 liters. About 75% at 110 so we used 6.6 as compared to about 6.2 if we do 100. Was such a relaxing drive in the Mondeo as compared to the D4D Hilux.

The (small) price to pay for saving an hour on the drive. It's going to be a long enough day, as it is, with a baby in the back and feed breaks every 2.5 - 3 hours (we hope).

I wonder how the Europeans drive their diesels considering most countries have 120-130 kph limits. I guess they just drive faster. Lol.

I hadn't actually worked out the consumption until you mentioned it. The trip computer said 6.2ltr/100 so that was slightly out. At one stage we were on target to do over 1200 kms until the week of light city driving. On the trip down to Bussleton I avoided using cruise control and tried to remain gentle on the throttle . First time owning a diesel so tried my best to see how frugal the car could be. We were carrying 2 adults, 2 children and a boot that was fully loaded, so really happy averaging 5.8ltr/100.

My average over about 2,000 kms is now 6.9 l/100kms. This is about 50% freeway driving at 100-120 but also includes more around town driving than usual and some back roads using Tiptronic mode. I'll reset it after the 3,000 km service check. I'm sure I could improve on this but it cruises so nicely around 120 that I tend to drive at this speed on freeways. (I use a detector and know where the mobile speed cameras are likely to be.)

Under similar conditions my petrol wagon would have done 9.5-10 l/100 kms.

With the cooler weather in Sydney should see some improvement in fuel consumption as engine TDCi will be more efficient and produce more power

I filled up for the first time today it was kinda cool not having to take off a fuel cap. 935 km's and 50 or so left in the tank so I was pretty happy with that. The screen said 6.8 average.

You were dead right on this. I have heard that somewhere between 95-100kph gives the best highway fuel economy. I drove 857kms on that trip along the Hume Highway and mostly at 110kph. Refilled with 57.90 litres for 6.76 L/100. That was a fully loaded car and boot and I may not have had the correct tyre pressure. I had 39 in the back but manual says should go up to 44.

The difference between 100 and 110 on the speedo, on fuel economy is quite marked.

But life's to short to be doing 100 in a 110 zone.

OK my new MC is 6l ave - 6.5 town and 5.3 highway.
Some tips I use to reduce fuel - switch off at long lights.
Increase tyre pressure by 10 lbs.
