Falcon is now a niche product. The XR's and Sprint are no doubt popular with private buys and the Mondeo is hardly a replacement for a turbo 6 or V8. I would assume that the remainder of Falcon sales go to government fleets and to FOA staff and in this case those sales will easily translate to Mondeo if Ford choose to pursue those.

On the other hand, thinking about it, the Fiesta and Focus compete in declining segments that typically deliver low profits to both the manufacturer and dealer. From Fords prospective, burning money chasing low profit sales when they can focus attention on higher profit margin models in popular segments like Kuga, Ranger and Mustang. Just for reference - Ford Sales up 13.7% for the first quarter this year. EcoSport up 50% Kuga up 40% Mondeo up 391% Transit Custom up 24%

What sort of margin would a dealer make on a Focus?

As part of Ford worldwide's turnaround under Mullalys control, Lower volume, higher margin was the aim and I believe this is exactly what Ford Australia is doing. |

Me too, care no longer. Its interest is if the private debt fuelled binge can be seen to be turning in any declines in the data (leading indicator perhaps), and then backed by housing data, employment figures, personal bankruptcy numbers, and banking news etc etc... back to being a macro datapoint, that's all it is

Bet you a ranger would pull in the profit 10 focus cars.....that is if focus actually makes any money. There is little money in small cars.

Manufacturers margin is closely guarded secret - one could only guess that something made in Thailand with leaf springs and basic body on chassis and sold at premium price would be more profitable than a small hatch. Dual cabs are good for profit margins and so are SUVs based on hatches. |

If they can find another company to share r&d and parts then its more viable. Also Korea throws lots and lots of money at their manufacturing. Also they control their market to make people buy locally.....like the japanese.

yes they are actually not bad , i drove one recently , quite a decent little car , with a lot of room in it, and seems to have a lot of space in width which a lot of small cars seem to lack.

hyundai seem to be picking up a lot of the fleet sales , once upon a time you`d go past a factory car park and see fords and holdens ...... then toyota`s , now you see fleets of white 130`s .
even if its only a few bucks saved on each car , to the bean counters a 5 year warranty must be like looking at gold bars . |

The first two sets of graphical stats are uploaded now.
Monthly Summary First Quarter Segment Review. As this is the end of the quarter, the Supplementary Stats will be posted later. Cheers Russ

Focus is a curious one - Corolla , Mazda 3 (traditional ) and nowadays i30(budget newcomer) and Golf (quality choice ) i can understand but Focus should absolutely outsell Cruze.

Reminds me of a car mag (Wheels?) that put Skyline and Pintara in different segments based on size. I think body identical but a distinct 4 and 6 cyl pitch....

Over in the US atm and the Fusion (mondeo) are every where here. It is a truck country though and after doing the 150 plant in detroit last week, it shows we are just a drop in the ocean! They produce 2600 F150 trucks a day between detroit & kentucky plants and still can't keep up with demand. That is just 150's. They sell more 150's in a day then we sell Rangers in a month! It is totally amazing that Detroit plant and a must do if travelling to the US.
Anyway, in Texas now to watch Nascar. Should be a fun day!!

If the Focus had a Hyundai or Mazda badge and was sold via Toyota dealers they would sell like hot cakes.
