Well doesn't look like my Vct is leaking anymore but still deff leaking. Probably lower part of timing case. Will go back to mechanic soon and get him to Tyler find it and he said some alternative options do I don't have to drop k frame.
But that's irrelivent to this post. What is relivent is car wasnt keen to start this morning. Wasnt even that cold. Took me 4 hits I believe. Will also try dissect the solenoid soon and get some photos. |

was at blue power today and they diagnosed my starting problem as a fuel pump issue. Havent had it changed yet though.

Lift the Rocker-Cover up vertically. Lift the rear up and forward until it clears internals). 2.Undo Banjo Bolt with 22mm socket. KEEP the TWO WASHERS. Ford don't sell them anymore. I reused mine until i find better aftermarket washers. 3.Disconnect Electrical Clip from end of Valve Assembly Solenoid, (i disconnect car battery first). 4.Undo Valve Assembly Solenoid with 27mm Ring Spanner. 5.Undo three bolts under the Solenoid-Housing with 10mm socket. Pull the Solenoid-Housing forwards and off. Lift up and twist the Housing past the oil line. Clean Solenoid-Housing and Rocker-Cover with Brake-Cleaner. 6.Remove Teflon Sealing Ring from centre of Solenoid-Housing. Find the split in the teflon ring and pull it apart so you can remove it. Refit new Teflon Sealing Ring. Do not bend it much, just enough to get it on. 7.Remove the O-Ring from the Solenoid-Housing. A guitar-plectrum or thin screw-driver will assist you in prying the O-Ring out enough for you to get you fingers on it. Fit the new O-Ring carefully. Ensure no twist in the ring. 8.Add a thin layer of Loctitie587 the bottom of the Solenoid-Housing, around the base of the O-Ring and around the 5 holes. Add some to the underside of the three bolts that go into these holes. 9.Refit Solenoid-Housing carefully. Tighten the three 10mm bolts allowing the sealant to squeeze out. Refit the 22mm Banjo-Bolt and the two washers. 10. Refit Valve Assembly Solenoid carefully. Do not tighten too much. Bit more than hand-tight will keep the washer from getting too compressed. Reconnect the electrical plug to the Valve Assembly Solenoid. 11.Remove old gasket from Rocker-Cover and clean the groove of oil. Add a thin layer of Loctite587 to the groove then fit the new Gasket slowly into the groove. Start at the front of engine so the fit is best at that spot, (it is above the Solenoid-Housing). Replace the Rocker-Cover very gently so not to damage anything or knock-out the gasket. HAND-TIGHTEN the FOUR 13mm BOLTS ONLY. Then let it sit for an hour and tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. The torque for the cover is meant to be 17-18Nm but that may squash your new gasket, and your new O-Ring, flat, making it leak oil. Tighten evenly and gradually. Nip a bit tighter if required. 12.Refit Spark-Plug Leads, Hoses, Cables, Negative Battery Terminal, etc. Let car sit for 24hours if you want the Loctite587 to be fully cured. Warm-up engine and check for leaks from Solenoid, Banjo-Bolt, Solenoid Housing and from Rocker-Cover Gasket. Tighten if leaks detected.

Mr.T says: "Don't be no fool - DON'T use Loctite Silicone Gasket Sealant." The Silicone will eventually eat the alloy and make the leak worse. Can use silicone on the rocker-cover but NOT on the VCT Assembly Housing. Use PERMATEX ANAEROBIC FLANGE SEALANT for VCT AssemblyHousing. I should have know. First time i removed VCT housing there was no silicon. Just a smooth surfaces with some staining. Buy PERMATEX ANAEROBIC FLANGE SEALANT at Covs (Coventrys). Less than $30 and should seal that VCT Solenoid Housing like glue. Doing the job again soon, will let you know how well it works.

Seal VCT SolenoidHousingAssembly with Anaerobic Flange Sealant:
-PERMATEX Anaerobic Gasket Maker or -LOCTITE 518 Flange Sealant Covs said they had Permatex but don't. They have Loctite518 FlangeSealant. It costs $37 for a 50ml tube of Loctite518. Permatex & Loctite owned by same people i think. Still using the SILICONE gasket maker (Loctitie587) around the 3xBOLTS and inside the 3xBOLT-HOLES of the Solenoid Housing Assembly. Some on the bolts themselves also. The job is the same process but we are covering the METAL ALLOY surfaces of the solenoid housing assembly with Flange Sealant instead of silicone sealant. DON'T DRIVE for 12 HOURS+ until Flange Sealant cures. Stay tuned for the results ...

Good man. There wasn't much specific info on the entire job.
It may NOT be possible to STOP the leak fully. After 2 attempts i said "Im never doing that job again." On 4th attempt i put silicone on the valve-cover-gasket & killed it. It began spraying atomized oil all over the entire engine bay. On my 5th attempt i got lazy & only put a new valve-cover-gasket into the rocker-cover with NO silicon-sealant & gently tightened it up. A very THIN LAYER of Anaerobic Flange Sealant, for the Solenoid-Assembly, and a much longer drying time, is for the 6th attempt. Tip: Before removing Rocker-Cover leave AIRBOX on the car. Simply undo 3x 10mm bolts that hold the Plastic Air-Intake tube to the Throttle-Body. Then BEND the plastic air-intake tube towards the WINDSCREEN then tuck it under the left windscreen wiper. Takes 20+minutes off the job.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm also having VCT oil leaks on my 2001 AUII Fairlane Ghia, i6.
Pulled the VCT solenoid off, found an orange o-ring that looked too loose, and a very squashed, flat black washer around outside (ie where the solenoid and housing mate up). The washer looked handmade, indicating a previous attempted repair. Can anyone tell me (or show me) what o-ring and washer the VCT solenoid actually requires? Mine is leaking from the plug, and possibly the washer. If I could find a replacement AU VCT solenoid, I'd be all over it, but can only seem to find BA onwards. Any help would be appreciated!

O-Ring V890155S100 $20 -Teflon Sealing Ring ERT6C262A $10 -Banjo-Bolt Washers X2 $6 I had to get a O ring for my daughters Aircon and I went to a Burnsons (I think) I took in the 'old one' so they could match it. Anyone else??? UK

I ended up putting a tight fitting o-ring in there, and tightened it "enough". Seems to have eliminated leaks so far, but haven't driven enough to really test, although it's certainly helped already.
