Micheal I don't know why you quoted my post in your rant, I was actually replying to MrEL post who was stating you were over loading the trailer if you had more then 1200kg. Bought brand new Trojan Marine hubs and bearings as they have better seals and the hubs are galvanised and rated at 1000kg.

I just re read it, I thought you were suggesting that I was overloading the trailer, but after re reading I realise what you were saying.

But the trailer has never even been loaded to maximum weight ever, and over half the KM's were done completely empty.

I still drop into that forum from time to time, shame it's no longer active as I don't particularly like the Facebook pages, as you can't follow builds properly and there is a huge number of mentally challenged people posting on Facebook pages, more so than forums for some reason.

Yeah I'm not on facebook so I missout all together, I do drop into the forum but there's nothing but tumble weeds. It's still good to go back and retrieve info as there is a lot stalled away in that site.

Our trailer goes alright.

Its 36 years old and we've never touched the bearings

The old man's an animal, it could have both wheels fall off and he'd be dragging it along the ground with sparks flying out of it and he'd still be pushing on saying she's all good.

I've got it in at the shop at the moment, gonna change wheel bearings while its in for rewire and new lights, then send it off for new floor to be welded in.

Yeah I'm only 10 minutes from willowbank, so we will have to catch up. I haven't really been on here either lately, to busy riding bikes, which I remember you having a few. And how's that beautiful black coupe coming along it would have to be close by now?

Only have one bike now a KTM LC4 640 Super Comp, had a road bike but sold it, coupe nearly ready, but been a bit lazy with it, it's basically ready to roll.

I guess living in the country that's a good bike to have, I've got a XR650R, not sure where you are but have be on rides over the boarder. Mainly down paddy's flat Rd Drake and tenterfield way.

Yep, not bad out here, a road bike is a death trap here, I am just south of the QLD border near Goondiwindi QLD, we go do all our shopping in Goondiwindi, and it's the closest civilisation.

I have a property at Port Macquarie, a few acres will be moving there end of next year, but I think Willowbank will be a regular for me, really enjoyed the day, also have family in the Gold Coast.

Once I move I will be looking at getting a cruiser like a harley or old style chopper bike.

Not sure about Timkin, but Jap bearings are the go also, have been for a long time.

My brother works for a company who sell parts to trailer manufacturers. They use only parts from the US or Japan. He stands by every part he sells.

My bro has told me many a story of a caravan that comes in with one failure or another. Usual reason being cheap parts or lack of servicing.

Generally the hub assembly you buy from an auto discount house will have cheap Chinese bearings as standard.
In most cases the trailer and caravan places are using the same hubs.
This is not a new tghing .
I found this out the hard way over 15 years ago with a new bogey custom made caravan that lost a wheel due to bearing failure at less than 1,000 kms.
over the years I have bought new hubs and immediately replaced the bearings with Timken or SKF.
The cheap bearings are easy to spot as they have less rollers and wider spaced cages.
Having less rollers means they are individually carrying more load. Throw this in with probable poor metallurgy and you have a failure waiting to happen.
I recently sourced some Timken bearings from the USA for my Ford Explorer and when they arrived they were made in Taiwan, but still marked Timken.
I doubt anyone could claim warranty after 12 months has expired though.
Marios could claim you incorrectly adjusted the bearings or used a poor grade grease etc.

If it sank on its maiden voyage having just rolled off the boat trailer (same as only 3000km car trailer in age almost!) i"d be ****ed too.

sucks but the first thing i do when i get a new trailer is pack the bearings properly with marine rated grease and adjust.

Quite often they seem to come with minimal grease (and usually the cheapest crap)

Most stuff out of Taiwan these days, is of a much higher quality/standard than most stuff out of China or India.

Of course they will claim what ever they want, they claimed that it was my lack of servicing and possible abuse of the trailer that cused the issue, nothing to do with their brearings. They also claimed in their response that all their customers repack and service their bearings every three months, and if I followed that shedule this would not have happened.

Funny how my annually serviced box trailer never had any issues and still runs around on the same wheel bearings.

Just annoys me how these companies get away with this BS, and how it's always the consumer who loses out, but if this thread costs them the sale of only one trailer I will be a happy man. They could have conceded their mistake and provided me with a new axle worth to them probably less than $100 (that is all I asked for as I wanted no part of their bearings and hubs), cost me $180 to buy at replacement retail price.

I mean what ever happened to standing behind your product that you sell?? What ever happened to customer service?? Instead they send me insulting emails.

I have all corrospondence here as well as total cost of repairs to trailer with me doing the work. Might work out total cost today and post it up.

indeed, good practice on your part i think,
i have seen some blokes lube a bearings by just wiping a smear of grease on them without repacking them or putting some extra grease in the hub and assemble them....she`ll be right mate, scary stuff.


when im on a trip if i pull up for a snack or fuel i kick the treads ..... it can give some insight if wheel is wobbling too much and tyre pressure, also i have a feel of the wheel rim and tyre temperature , this can give an indication of sum ting wong (humor) , it also can also give an indication if a brake is binding or some other problem .
i do this check religiously on cars , trucks, trailers,caravans.
the way i read it is, one wheel/tyre/hub hotter than other/s .... possible problem.
tyre pressure wrong .... possible problem.
one wheel/tyre/rim/brake drum/bearing assembly missing ...... possible problem.

i had a bloke in a car hail me down one day in the truck at the lights he said through the window you have a flat on the rear of the trailer, i thanked him and pulled off the road for a look.
i had just done an over dimensional job on low loader with smaller wheels , notorius for blowing tyres,
i got around to the back of the trailer and the inner left hand rear most had blown sometime ago and there was only a bit of the sidewalls and a few bits of wire left hanging down , good to see a bloke with a sense of humor .

Replaced Wheel/tyre (original was never found again after it went off into the scrub at 100km /hr), Axle assembly, bearings x 4 and hubs x 2 total cost not including labour came to $492, not counting gettign the trailer home after the wheel fell off.
