How did you find driving at 300km/h?
Was the Porsche better than the AMG (which are speed limited to 250)?
How about the other exotica?

I have only ever read about such things in magazines and on the internet so I have no actual idea about how well they go on Australian roads in our local conditions or if such speeds are actually possible on the road in question.

Well that will be part of his defence if true. I am not sure what speed detecting equipment is used in WA but I have never used or even seen anything that reads above 199km/h.
If the evidence partialy consists of "As a serving member ..blah blah..20 years experience..blah blah.. I estimated his speed at 300km/h", I suspect the reply would be "And how many vehicles have you seen at or near this speed?"

I suspect the only person who knows the whole truth is the guy being charged and he probably will not support the case..........

Its like the bike riders pushing big speeds in a straight line, and getting all messed up in corners.

although i'd be scared as, i watched a video on youtube yesterday of a Merc AMG - looked like an SL55 on the autobarn. he lost it and flipped off the inside guard rails at 240km's(thats what it said anyway), slid on his roof for about 300m crossed the road back to the outside(missing 2 cars) and came off into the grass which then flipped it back over and it finally stopped and the hardtop roof flew off as it did so. the (incredibly lucky) driver then got out, walked up the embankment and kinda flopped onto his ***. woulda been a wild ride!

Is there a link to the news story??? Obviously if someone was caught at that speed or anything close to it, the media would be all over it...

Edit - Found a link to it.

yep just found one this morning:

PerthNow Link

Quote:
POLICE have charged a WA man with reckless driving and impounded his Porsche but played down a report he had been observed speeding at 300km/h.

The 31-year-old man from Margaret River had been driving a silver Porsche at an estimated 300km/h on the Old Coast Road south of Mandurah.

Police say the reported 300km/h speed was unlikely - and perhaps out of reach of the Porsche.

It is understood the figure might have arisen from an estimate made by police seeking to apprehend the driver, who initially was wrongly suspected to have stolen the vehicle.

Senior Constable Mark Burton, of Mandurah Police, said he had responded to a call from Bunbury police to look out for a Porsche travelling north at high speed that was believed stolen.

He said the vehicle turned out not to have been stolen and was not speeding when he intercepted it this afternoon at Herron, south of Mandurah.

"It stopped, but when my passenger alighted and went up to the driver, he put his foot on the accelerator hard and tried to do a U-turn and go the other way," Const. Burton alleged.

He said the car had stalled and while the driver was attempting to restart it, his fellow officer had taken the keys, sparking an altercation.

"We have no idea how fast he was going," Const. Burton said.

"It appears he has made it from Australind to Herron in 25-30 minutes so he was obviously going pretty good."

The driver of the vehicle had been charged with offences including drink driving, failing to stop, reckless driving and assaulting a public officer.

The Porsche had been impounded for seven days - for the "burnout" performed during the U-turn, Const. Burton said.

Is he the new "Stig"?

Judging by the way he stalled it, no. Soundslike he was really moving, I doubt 300kmh as well though, if the roads in WA are anywhere as near as bumpy and uneven as the ones around here you coulnd/woudnt do anymore than 250 unless you wanted to Die & not leave any earthly remains.

Guess hell get some suspended sentance and a ban from driving for over 2 years. Bit of an idiot if you got the money for that car you can afford to go to a track day.

Well there seems to be a bit of straw clutch, possibly to save someones bum.
The confiscation was for doing a burnout while doing a U turn, not a bifficult thing to happen and even a slight loss of traction in one wheel on dirt can be concidered a "burnout" with the right "attitude.
I had a friend once who was nearly jailed for failing to stop and runnin g from police in NSW. He was on a BMW bike, never got over about 130km/h and never ever saw the following police car. As he was on a bike he could overtake easily while the angry little ant in the pursuit car got held up a lot. This did not, however, prevent hem from being stopped at a road block by armed police with weapons "on display".
The drink driving really has no defence but all of this would fit into:

Had a couple of beers as was exactly .05 (.049999999999999 is legal), was blatting along slightly above the limit and got a good run as everytime he caught up to a slower car he was in a safe overtaking area (Porsches are much better at accellerating, cornering and slowing than police cars). Whe he finally realised that there was a police car behind him he stoped and then realising that he was in a dangerous place moved the car to the other side of the road where the officer, all wound up because he had been chasing the Porsche for a long time even though the Porsche driver did not know it, ran over and "spiritedly" conversed with the driver. There would be no reason to rough up the driver if he had not "assulted police" would there so he must have done so.

Of course he could also have been doing a "Jake and Ellwood mission from God"..........

The magistrate will sort it out, they are quite good at that.

Flappist, your version is what would be on the ABC.

This would be the Today Tonight or ACA version.
"He was doing 300km/hr, while smoking the tyres and swigging on a bottle of whiskey, did three donuts and nearly killed the Police officer who was trying to restrain him."

Me too. Above 250km/h things get a little blurry. However it really depends on the road quality and the car. I've heard people say that doing 400+km/h in a Veyron doesnt feel like the car is going to.... lift.

According to one news report he was clocked by the chopper.
As far as taking 25 mins to cover 61 kays, who knows he might have turned off at one stage to hide but got flushed out by the chopper.
I guess we'll hear all when he appears in court.
He also tasered because he had a go at the Police when they tried to arrest him.

25 mins to do 61 kms is an average speed of 146.4 kph. Still a very high average speed.

Any clear motorways are good for 300km/h if you have capable cars.

Not just Motorways, but also a lot of our good outback Highways (think the what were the derestricted highways in NT) The trick is to get a vehicle that is capable.

Yes but what was the exact point to point distance and exact time?

I suspect that he was not pulled over outside the post office. If he was seen 5km out of Australind and pulled over 4 km from Herron and the 25-30 minutes was actually 27 minutes then the average speed was about 115.

If 31 minutes then 100km/h.

If 6 and 7 km and 25-30 minutes....etc etc etc.

They admitted they had no idea of how fast. For them to do that means they probably have no evidence whatsoever.

What is the bet that a scruby in a camry was overtaken and rang "dob a hoon" to set the whole thing in motion.

Having been in that position myself, I was lucky that my scruby was such a dropkick that his exaggerated story could not physically be true and the coppers then gave him a hard time.

Having driven 254km/h in a GT-P that would be extremely character building. The aero on the BA/BF goes nuts at that speed.......

The quickest I have been in a car was 250km/h which was pretty white knuckle stuff in an old VT SS, slowing down I hit some fairly average bumps that don't affect you at all when sitting on 110 and things become a hell of a lot different. I was down to about 190 when I hit these bumps and I honestly doubt that anybody doing 250 or over would of avoided the concrete barriers, I'm glad I slowed when I did.

Speed and bumpy roads don't mix, thats what track days are for
