Get the 2 cars together with two fully independent drivers who know the Ring backwards. Give them 1 day to get to grips with each of the cars and then get them to run 3 laps of each car. Average the times and bingo, you've got some comparative times, that at least have some relevance to each other.

I dont need to be a professional driver to know when Im being fed a marketing excercise, besides that I dont really care.. Be good to see one of these new nissans at a track day,but it would want to be really fast (modified) not to get owned by the old and ancient leaf sprung cars we run around with... |

There was meant to be a track day with a few exotics (including an R35 GTR) at Phillips Island recently.
The R35 was modified and didn’t have a speed limiter. I don’t know what mods it had done or the people involved so don’t ask. Judging from the claimed time I’d say that the mods were “significant” Here is a link to the post – it’s got a data trace of the R35’s lap times in it. The post is light on detail http://www.clubitr.com.au/forums/sho...?t=5139&page=3 The modded R35 GTR is claimed to have done 1:15’s down there (which is *ing fast – quicker than a V8 supercar around there, or Casey Stoner’s quickest time last Sunday). A local V8 would be doing something around 1:50 (or better), my little N/A FWD can just get under 2:00. Times: Nissan GTR R35 GTR 1:15s Porsche 997 GT3s (one was on full slicks) 1:16/17s Race prepped Mazda RX7 on full slicks 1:19s Ferrari F430 (Scuderia?)1:20s Nissan GTR R34 (modded) on semis with bolt ons 1:21s

A true sports car will always be faster than a bike around a track due to four bigs bits of rubber and four big brakes compared to two skinny tyres. Acceleration will never be close to a motorcycle but the cars make huge amounts of ground under brakes, entry and mid corner. Even a V8 Supercar brakes much, much later than a Superbike, when it comes time to exit then it is a whole different story however as the bikes accelerate out of the corners so much faster. When you are talking anything remotely standard road car wise that is not a true supercar the bikes will annihilate the cars, but get a true race car and the bikes won't see which way the race car went when it comes to lap times. By true race car I mean anything lighter and faster than a V8 Supercar, which is only true exotica, as V8 Supercar lap times are fairly lineball with Superbikes at most tracks. Of course the other difference is however the sportsbikes will lap all day, just put fuel and tyres on them and they will go all day, day after day. Try doing that in a standard sports car however.... Then compare the costs....

I agree with all you’ve said bike>cars for acceleration, and car>bike on brakes and grip. And the bikes and V8 supercars are built to a control formula. Full credit to the nut cases on bikes that crank around there at 300kmh while I am doing 210ish. They may be able to wear their tyres all around the side walls all day long but if you have an off at the island I’d rather be in a car (cage). Sub-2:00’s at the Island is quite quick enough for me. I have been out there when a first gen Porsche GT2 on slicks was out there and he just left me for dead in corners, under brakes and acceleration which is as you’d expect. As a born-again chicken the idea of anything quicker than 1:40’s around there gives me the heebie-jeebies and something like an F5000 would give me a case of the shivering quits.. I know that this GTR wasn’t stock and I posted the time mainly to show that it was running with some quick cars – well at least quick to me.

Mallala. That's a fair different kettle of fish to the Island, lol. Massive braking loads into the Northern Hairpin and some real micky mouse stuff in the second half of the circuit.

His car is over half a second quicker over 400metres than the New GTR. All honesty Im glad that Porsche is challenging the times. I guess they dont mind handing the crown over, but to be humiliated by a car that did it in a time that isnt physically possible in an off the shelf model is fair enough. 25 seconds is a little bit more than a set of tyres.

it would`nt surprise me if the nissan gtr was that good, they have a lot of sales from hero car worship and have a lot of money tied up in these sports cars, does anyone remember how the nissan got the godzilla tag? it was`nt by being last.

For one thing bens car is way faster than this nissan, and what makes it all the more so is that its around 100kg heavier, and is 20 years old without a multi million dollar developement budget, Whats more you wont put anything into anything, its as easy as lolllzzzz to say it,but not so easy to do... |

An old crap Ford isn't a good car mate, not to me. Maybe to you, but not me.
The point made initially, before you all got lost in protecting your infallable Fords, was that any car will break after constant abuse on the drivetrain. I don't care if some million year old Ford with a rattly interior and square tyres doesn't break something, I'm talking about new cars you can actually buy. Go redline clutch dump your new F6 3 times a day for the next 2 weeks and see how your clutch goes. That's my point. |

Or that maximum lateral G force it can generate? Or 200km/h to 0 time? How about lap time on any circuit track? Some tracks and almost ALL roads have corners. The ONLY Australian made motor vehicles that are remotely worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence and the GT3, GTR etc are the Joss, Elfin or some of the other esoterics. Ford and Holden make very good sports saloons but they have about as much in common with the GT3/GTR as they do with a Kenworth or Toyota Landcruiser. As far as the "Nissan fibbing" is concerned. They either are or are not. Time will tell and no amout of "expert opinion" from forum members, most of whom have never even seen a GTR or GT3 let alone driven one and the only Northern Ring experince thaey have is from Playstation will make any difference. Personally, I was going to buy a GTR next year, now I am not so sure but rather than jump on a bandwagon of "anti-everything" moaners I will sit back and watch. After all, BOSS 290s eat oil, F6s blow up clutches, ION 4 speeds fry, Dana diffs fry, Brembos go bezerk on utes, LS1s eat oil, LS1s blow up........ Oh hang on, all those problems were sorted after a short time weren't they? |
