Oh' yes, media fanfair.

It was such an horrific incident & my heart goes out to Mick & his family.

I hope the surgeons can patch up that leg rope with some degree of normality, thus allowing Mick to further his career & move on from this terrible tragedy!

A terrifying situation yes.

An attack - no.

Yeah he was "as far from being attacked as possible".

In fact he was on the Pluto Space Probe at the time.

If it's not an attack, why is it OK to punch another animal?

I am a believer that if you are in shark infested water, expect to come into contact. They are not being personal, just instinctive. If you don't want to be bitten or "attacked" then say away from them.

Pretty simple really.

This is an attack by a south African great white. The sharks are renowned for this leaping out of the water in this region

He is a lucky boy 'sharky' only wanted his autograph or for the other guy to win!

Maybe the water was too shallow for the shark to propel itself out of the water like in that video.

Maybe,
but too many experts are claiming foul on the 'attack' wording used by media and describing the shark as an inquisitive youth. a relative youngster at 2.5 meters long would make a mess of a clumsy human if it wanted too. Look how they deal with those small agile seals in the video. I don't care really!

Obviously " as far as possible" means something else in another language.

In English it is pretty easy to comprehend.

Barraxr8, I'm not interested in entering into a pi$$ing competition with you mate, but that's not what I said. If you check you'll see that what I wrote in my original post was this:

"I have a great deal of respect for Mick Fanning and for his achievements, but this event was probably about as far removed from a shark attack as you could ever see."

I think that the average reasonable person would expect that if you are the victim of a shark attack then there's a fair chance you would probably have copped a nibble or sustained some sort of injury at some point during said attack.

As earlier stated I have the utmost respect for Mick Fanning, my post was simply questioning the media sensationalism that resulted from this incident.

I'll leave it at that.

Cheers,

Russ.

I understand your point and possibly true..

how ever mick had punched the shark so maybe the shark had made it's intentions clear. hence an attack was imminent..

So.. If there's no nibbles or blood, it's NOT a shark "attack"??
Do we call it a shark "intelligence gathering exercise" instead?

Think you'll find the correct term is "Carcharodon Carcharias Reconnaissance Mission".

I would have thought a 'terrifying shark encounter' would be more the appropriate terminology to use rather than the sensationalized media embellished version.

Put it this way, if it wasn't Mick Fanning and caught on video, I doubt it would even get a whisper on the media. At best it would be a youtube video.
