the favourite for me had to be the b&h longhurst cars. looked tops in the yellow. (although when i think back to the b&h days, i always remember the passing of the great denny hulme down conrod straight).
off topic - isnt it funny how holden fans lick the bum crack of brock when, back then, he dropped the holden when it was uncompetitive and went racing bmw's and ford's?.

Too bad they retailed for $100k here...if you could find an importer. There was one near where I lived and I used to drool. The Sierra kept me following the blue oval...at a time when Ford Oz thought an EFI 6cyl was a fair substitute for a V8.

I remember some very creative "shenanigans" by some teams relating to the Cosworths at Bathurst one year re qualifyling. Such as fake extinguishers (lighter) and adjustable boost at the twist of a covertly mounted radio dial. They had that much poke DJR designed his own 9inch housing for the independant rear end.

These motors were built like hand grenades running some pretty big boost numbers (something like 42psi in qualifying trim iirc) and were built to last something like 30-40km. Creative way of working around the rules, but one that still goes down in the record books. |

I heard about about a magic cable that was fitted b/w the waste gate and the ash tray on a particular turbo bluebird.....pull out the ashtray for extra boost !! it would have made other FURYious (nudge nudge)
I remember a fire extengisher going off in a Sierra engine bay during qualifying at the mountain one year. There was a suggestion it would lower the intercooler temp dramatically...I think it was brocky....anyone else remember? I also remember when DJ was the only one having a go with the Sierras after giving up on the 5.0 Mustangs. That was the days when they would race for 60 minutes regardless of how many laps that would be...John Bowe was driving a turbo *cough Volvo *cough. I remember the Sierras blowing up turbo's regularly....clouds and clouds of white smoke would pour from the exhaust. The year that DJ and JB won Bathurst with their Sierra I heard that when the team pulled down the engine it was completely shagged. The turbo vanes where almost completely worn away and it was way down on boost....they only just made it (like all memorable victories with a wounded car) |

I was typing my last post as you posted Wulos....you remember it better than I did....It was a skyline not brocky in a sierra ??? OK
Back in the early days of the turbo in F1 in the late 70's early 80's when BMW was a player they had qualifying engines turned up to buggery which would only last 3 laps - one warm up lap, one flyer, plus a cool down lap. They would fit another engine lthe same and they were fitting new tyres - it was maddness BMW used to get engine blocks for their f1 engines by finding old 318i's with the 4 cyl 'M10' engine which had more than 100,000 klms on them. These engine blocks would be well 'tempered' and due to all the heating and cooling cycles the engine went though as a daily driver. It was considered to have worked out of the 'cold stresses' that the manufacturing process used to put into the block. The blocks where shotpeened in other words. |

It's quicker than that now ... I think the McLaren F1 LM beat that one with 2.7 or 2.8 IIRC
Last time I saw a Cosworth on Sydney's roads was one of the last Escort RS Cosworths ... numberplate was "F1" ... was red in colour. God it sounded horn

I see the same one from time to time in my area black fully kiited up and boosted and I'd swap my XR6T anyday for it. And those engines in a mk2 escort hammer...IMBOSS is testament. The white eskie thats been in various DVD's and mags, and I seen it in action, ok not a sierra but sierra powered either way I want one!

I owned all three of them and the RS500 You can see them at the All Ford days Warwick Farm I only have 2 Escort cosworths now These are all in Oz I import these cars mainly from the UK www.chalker.com.au This Touring car is in NZ and owned by a friend I went for a run in it without a belt on along the country roads I have never been so scared in all my life |

mmmm the eskies ans sierras. id love a cosworth esky. there are alot of myths and legends about djr and his sierras. one that i know of is djr's sierras were the most succesfull in worldwide touring car history (out of the sierras), aparently back then the car didnt have to have a certain number sold before it could race here because it was under the international rules, i may be mistaken and if i am please forgive me.

THe texaco sierras were the toughest ones ever.. even if they did use rocket fuel.... at least the beat brocky on the day.... only to loose bathurst 3 mouths later due to a protest about the fuel they ran....

I imported 4 of them - a white one, a silver one, a black one and a met blue. 2 from the UK and 2 from NZ. 2 were RS5000 and 2 RS500s - the RS500s had a bigger TO4 turbo and a few other bits and pieces designed to circumvent the homologation regs which required that 5000 be produced in the one form the gain original homologation (hence RS5000), and then any updates had to be in batches of 500 hence the RS500. A really great road car - docile, comfortable and smooth, but because of the huge wing every man and his dog wanted to race.... Also, bloody dangerous in the wet - as soon as boost came on, no matter what gear, it would go sideways....so you had to pussy-foot around below about 3000 rpm because it was too easy to get into trouble without even trying.

Its been said on here before about Brock not having the Ford badge on his car, well check out Bluehoon's pics, the Johnson car doesnt have a badge either, and the Longhurst car has the blue badge? Wasnt his a red one? I remember it red as it was weird, but looked good on the car..

Ye olde tales of Bathurst in this thread are very interesting - makes me wish it was still as exciting today but watching identical shells of XR8's/SS's with nothing in common with what I can buy lapping round and round in procession is YAWN material for me.
