Personally, if I was the friend, I'd kiss ur butt for having insurance and pay the excess myself.

your car is like your woman - you do not let anyone touch them unless it is totally unavoidably necessary

i am not sure if you should ask for money - for sure he should offer to help, but the responsibility for the accident does come down to you. if you did not let him drive, then he would not have crashed your car

unfortunately, some lessons are painful to learn

He asked to drive the car he pays the excess, no if's no but's no may bee's.

If he offered to drive because you were too drunk to drive home from the pub, or you asked him to drive then I believe you should probably cover the excess, as he was doing you a favour to drive the car.

What the excess is does not matter, the driver of the car is responsible for the car, end of story, especially if he asked to be driving.

I have a low excess of $500 if myself or my wife drive the car, we are however the ONLY drivers, any other person drives the car the excess is $5000.......yes $5K......but it matters not one bit to me as it is not my problem. If anyone else asks to drive I tell them about the 5K excess, and most opt not to drive.

No excess needs to be payed in that case, as it's the other drivers fault and he becomes responsible for all damages and expenses, the fact that he does not have insurance is his problem not yours. It only becomes your problem if you do not have insurance either, and now need to sue the other driver in civil court. This is the reason all my cars are fully insured I do not care who hits me my car gets fixed or replaced as needed

fully agree with this point "if" someone absolutely must drive your car
was this discussed before hand

unfortunately this does not help the op, but this should be a warning not to lend your car unless you are absolutely certain, the driver will pay in the event of an accident. and also you should have an agreement covering mechanical failures and canaries too
to me, it is too hard to lend a car out. there are too many variables that can go wrong and therefore strain a friendship. if you must lend it, lend it to someone you don't know, because you are likely to get as much money back from them, but at least a friendship is not ruined
