Yeah right, I'm not you mate.

On the plus side all of these responses have helped and she is starting to reconsider. A holiday to Thailand or Singapore should nearly seal the deal lol.

She and I both have a mutual hatred for the Getz.

a bloke at work had one to get to and from work. about 40km each way, reliable and cheap. had it for about 3 years, maybe 2. was reasonably happy with it as a cheap runabout. I guess safer than a motorbike but about the same expense to run.

I'd tell her to keep the Datto but it is a with no heater and not safe at all, the damn thing is a death trap IMO. At least the matiz has twin airbags. Looks like I'm screwed.
Mate seriously I have always thought you were a bit "funny" but to actually want to have a coles trolley with doors in your driveway is pushing things, even for you. What worries me more is that you blame this on your mrs, next you'll be blaming the funny clothes and the shoe fetishes on her as well.

Seek professional help.

Ah.....NO. That says it all for me really. Given the right role, any car can be a good purchase.....well almost any car. The matiz is one those 'useless' cars i call them....sure its a daewoo but the real problem is there are many many other cars (as mentioned by others) that for the cash and running costs do the job much much better. I reckon it might actualy be alot better in a crash than many of the older, bigger cars though.....still i couldn't stand to drive it....

how much is a divorce laywer going for these days....

Personal preference I suppose. I've driven a few and done a fair few k in them and I would put them up there with the worst cars I have ever driven.

Matiz crash test
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl2aF...eature=related
and crash test info
http://www.euroncap.com/tests/daewoo_matiz_2000/65.aspx

Despite dual airbags and pretensioners on the test vehicle the drivers chest contacted the steering wheel hard. Feet and legs would be crushed resulting in permanent disability or dismemberment. Rear passengers would suffer severe spinal and abdominal injuries provided the rear seat belts actually didn't prematurely release which is a known failure in the earlier models. A child in this vehicle in the best of child restraint seats would fair poorly and would additionally suffer severe head trauma in a side impact. Note these results are at just 64km/hr.

Getz in manual is awesome. The auto's a gutless POS, but driving it was a dream inner city.

It's pretty zippy, gives fuel economy of 6l/100km, very good vision and the interior is sufficient. It kills most others in its class, including the Matiz.

maybe you could talk her into getting a (old original) mini??? if she after a tiny car why not get the best of the tiny bunch with bathurst winning respect to boot hehe. ok i'll stop making jokes now and cant help but laugh at all the funny stuff we did with my mates matiz, and you wouldnt belive it but somehow he managed to run it out of fuel twice! trying to get as many kays possible to a tank... i cant remember the number but im sure my 460 would use more fuel than it did just starting it up.... oh the good times

Don't know if you'd want a 3 cyl, 800cc auto...

Given that Daewoo is dead here, spare parts may become an issue in time, but from all I've read, Daewoo's 3 cylinder motors are pretty tough.

Don't imagine they'd be very safe though. Pretty cheap to run. 3 spark plugs and 600ml of oil

that also weighs 1.4 ton

Wha???? They weigh less than a ton, about 900kg if I read correctly. 37.5kw wouldn't even be able to move 1.4t.

My missus drives a 99 Daewoo lanos which has done 310,000kms and all its needed over the years was an oil flush, air con regas and a disk rotor.

Depends how you treat them really. They dont handle a thrashing too well.

Resale value wont be great though, especially due to the spare parts not being readily availabl.

Can't blame anybody for feeling that way about those little things.

Just had a quick look around the net and there is some pretty decent cars out there for about the $5000 mark:

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5789333.aspx

There are a few of these Pulsars around at these price which I personally think this one is a real bargain, but if you want something a bit closer to Matiz in size, heres a few others:

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5895945.aspx

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5827865.aspx

Sometimes it can pay to think outside of the square, I'm not sure form personal experience but the usual consensus is that both of these are pretty robust and reliable, and being European they will be safe, and with quality build that you want get out of a Matiz.

You won't get much with a Toyota or Honda badge at this price, you would be looking at something like a mid nineties Starlet which I think is overpriced.

Also I Gather that a Manual isn't an issue, due to most Matizs out there are manual, and Auto wasn't available till near the end.

Abit off topic but after seeing the matiz crash test I found this clip of a controlled drag race between a matiz and a matiz turbo.
It's worth a giggle lol.

one of our fitters used one as a work car, the 'courier' version with no back seats and it had bars on the windows, bought it nre, cost him less than 30 bucks a week at the time in repayments,he did 100k plus every day and didnt have a problem, the back was always loaded up with tools and gear and he used to use about a quarter of the fuel i was using in my nissan 1.6 litre. the economy was very impressive. as stated i'd personally go for a swift or something but....
actually i think i'd go a suzuki alto before a matiz,at least suzuki are proven reliable

I was reading through a Euro car magazine, like one that is just a book of car specs and prices, got to the Sirion, and found that Europe sells a AWD TURBO 1.3..... :

Now THAT I would seriously consider if available here... was like 17,000Euro as well I think.

Well Russ you are looking in the same price bracket as I was just 12 month ago and if you cant find a neat KJ/N Laser for that money with less than 150KM on it then you aint trying. FAR better than a bluudy Matiz. Even for its age and definate upgrade on the Datto. I looked at the same year model Pulsars and they were tinny and rough riding and small by comparo. Corollas are a plenty, but earlier models for that price, and not many 1.8ltrs like the Laser. I think if you actually find one to drive it will change her mind but drive something else 1st then the Matiz. She will notice the lesser quality.

I'm so glad my wife is a 'driver'. Had no trouble saying yes to her request to buy an SP20. One of the main reasons I married her, actually. (Driver, not SP20.)

If your Better Half still really wants the Dagwoo, you could always just say "No! Honey, you deserve a safer car. Yes, you are a good driver, but other people aren't. I love you and think you deserve a safer car, blah blah blah (read: suck suck suck)"

How a car looks before a crash very quickly becomes irrelevant if it's poor safety renders a loved one maimed (or worse). Keep shopping around. Good luck.

no he said his wife

all jokes aside in the current climate there are better, safer, easier to obtain parts for, options available for your 5k under 150k criteria

I know its not suitable but you could grab a AU2 for that and under that and that has air bags ABS and woolworths sells parts

On of my missus’ friends came to visit us one day and parked a Toyota Echo in the driveway. I told her to park it in the street outside a neighbour’s house or she can leave.

She though I was joking…

Personally, I wouldn’t let anyone even park a Matiz in the driveway, let alone share a house with someone who actually wanted one.

There are a few options here:

Giving her a good old slap of WTF were you thinking.
Divorce.
Leaving her overseas when you go on your holiday.
Leaving drugs in her bag at the airport.
Giving her some drugs to help with this problem.
Buying her a motorcycle, they’re faster and safer.
Bringing other women home who like Fords.

This has already done serious damage to your credibility even by just allowing her to consider a POS like this. It is very difficult to reverse credibility issues like this.

Sorry Dezza, just looking in a general sense. The Fairmont Ghias in the EA guise are one of my favourite E series because they could come with T5s stock.

Mate, honestly if a matiz is her thing, why not try pushing towards an Excel, Might even save $2000 and have parts much more readily available.

Slow. Unreliable. Uses lots of oil (1 litre per 600kms!). $1035 drivers seatbelt that is prone to failure/ excessive wear, A transmission that is horrible, and will need replacing (if it hasn't been already). We had one for 3 years as a delivery vehicle, and the amount of issues with it was ridiculous.

Well I thought I should update.

I WON, no Matiz here. Mrs just bought an 01 Suzuki Baleno, nice little car with a 1.6l EFI 4cyl all alloy engine. Only 73k and it was owned by a lady (I checked, it was), has a full service history and for what it is has a little bit of go.

Much better than a Matiz.
