I paid $35 from BDL Car Stereo in Canberra, but pretty sure Autobarn told me $32 (could've been $35 also). They are on backorder though at my local Autobarn, and they weren't expecting any for a while, but they would put an order in for me if i paid the $15 freight. I went to BDL instead - they rang me when their stock from Aerpro arrived and chanrged me no freight. BDL are currently out of black, but have the mid grey one (FP9141).

That's not a bad price considering I paid $35 in a "major" country town (Canberra). Mine took me all of 8 minutes to install, and about 5 minutes in the old's car.

Oh thank god! I've been trying to mount my surround for ages and I couldn't figure out any other way than bending the plastic back until near snapping point :(

Cheers!

That's what mine used to look like. It does the job. For $35, the FP9140 looks factory.

I got one of these as soon as they came into work (Autobarn). Only cost me $18. Just waiting to rewire up the speakers before I put mine in. But definitely a great invention by aerpro.

Looks great! The only issue I see with these is that the whole radio can now be stolen without much effort at all, but only we'd know that (until I posted that comment, of course).

Im getting one of these fitted this Friday while my sub and amp get put in. Im hoping it supports the head unit well as opposed to the way it is now.

It does - mine used to wobble up and down, and in and out, but is now in and doesn't move at all.

From the pictures it looks as though it doesn't really bring the top of the unit out too much, does the surround "curve" down to the faceplate or is it more of a drop

the headunit does sit back in the dash a fair bit, its designed so that you dont need the faceplate surround so the fascia acts as a headunit surround. i guess its bcause the factory headunit faces own so much

Is the volume control still able to be operated via the steering wheel with an after market cd player?

The steering wheel control unit is called a CAT10F. Made by stinger and available at most Autobarns. They will work with various models of cars and head units that have a remote control, as the CAT10F uses infrared to mimic the head units remote. They can also be wired into some aftermarket units, but isn't as effective. They aren't cheap and cost about $200.

Why wouldn't wiring it direct into the headunit and controls be more effective? A hard wired connection will always be more reliable than an IR connection.

Because not all aftermarket units have the option for wired steering wheel controls, and not all units recognise its connected. I suppose what I meant to say was it is a more universal installation option, so gives you more choice in aftermarket units.

When you put it like that it makes more sense, the most ideal situation would be using the direct connect (CAT + Eclipse 7200 = happy AU owner with working steering controls)

Yes, it has metal brackets that mount to the side of the head unit. It's the best mounting I've seen and used for an AU (and I've had a few AUs, and each has had an aftermarket head unit).
I have just finished installing a Sony headunit and I had to remove the brackets because it would not fit into the slot because of the 2 screws on either side. I hope it doesnt move around, it felt pretty sterdy. What do you think? Did you have the same issue?

For some reason mine did not fit into the slot because of the brackets (the screws holding them) so I left them out. was it easy to fit and if I wanna take it back out how hard is it?

if your using the aerpro unit it is a snug fit. i had to use a bit of presssure to persuade it in over the retaining screws.

mine was also pretty tight, i think the screws really need to be counter sunk into the metal bracket...
