Being a Ford fan, for that kind of money I would not hesitate for very good examples of:

AUII Fairlane VCT (for the pure comfort plus economy of the 6 over the V8)
AUI-on Fairmont Wagon and change
AUI-on Fairmont Ghia 6 and change
AUIII XR6 VCT Sprint, for the rarity

Otherwise, I like the Subaru Outback 4Gen wagons, but they are 50% more expensive than the listed Chery price.

yeah my young brother has a 97 soarer, a very nice example, but even finding wiring codes for them can be a problem as they where optioned different in different countries, he managed to find one for his from a bloke modding his in russia of all places..........

I am a bit biased here but instead of the chery i'd definitly recommend

AU2 fairlane with VCT i6
acres of space and oodles of comfort

for 10,990 you could get an A1 example with low kms and have money left over

for a non ford option i'd pick/reccomend a TL magna, my missus has one of these and its a very solid car and the 3.5 litre engine rocks. a shame they dont make em anymore..... that awd on the carsales link posted by RHR is seriously awesome

For my moneny, a low k AU Fairmont Ghia VCT with full leather and Tickford suspension & 17"s, MoMo wheel, body kit - hard to beat as a value for money daily. If you shop wisely and want more go you'ld have enough change left over for a Raptor supercharger........ 185-220RWKW......

The Clio punches well above its weight class in all aspects of a car.

Nice stereos in them too as well as awesome brakes.

I agree that these are great cars, much better handling than the usual choice (Golf GTI). However, maybe not everybody wants such a small car or front wheel drive, and a 'shtty' Falcon is more suitable?

There are a plethora of great used cars that one can pick up for $10990.

Agreed, the used Clio would be a far superior buy if small car was the parameter with the price tag, and would be a lot more fun to own.

Just bought this ( see link below ) for $6,500.00 with rego until july 2012 and spent $1,000.00 on a new timing belt and full service including platinum plugs . Kind of a no brainer really . There would have to be hundreds of thousands of second hand cars that you'd buy for the money rather than a Cherry .

Anything is safer than a Cherry! My GF's 1997 Toyota Starlet is safer.

Google thwe ANCAP footage and you will be scared. See one of those things crash first hand and you'll never get in one.

MY OPINION:
A few cars came to mind, Good EL XR8, not so good AU XR8, BA XR6....
But (don't shoot me) the best I could think of overall would have to be a 1999 Impreza WRX, 4 star ancap, turbo, sub 6s 0-100, good handling and decent fuel economy. And a good example one with lowISH km's could be had for the price of a Cherry J1....

If I had 10,990 to spend I would buy a s%&^$#y old falcon or commodore over a euro hatch, even though the euro hatch is the better car, purely because that is my personal taste in cars. Doesn't make anyone less intelligent.......

Thanks M8 , bought it for the missus who does all of 5,000 km's a year , she fell in love the instant she sat in it . It is in amzingly good condition with a full book with a Lexus dealer until the last 2 services . Not my style of car but at the price it was a steal and like I said she LOVES it . Wanted to buy her a Benz a few years back but she vetoed that saying they look like a gangster cars . Waited till after we bought this to tell her she will be mistaken for a Jewish doctors wife .

Id buy an 1989- 1991 HSV SV5000. They occasionally sell for around that money.
They may be old but the interior is still a nice place to be. Climate air, trip computer, VL Group A front seats with Caprice rear seats wrapped in optional howe leather, 200kw motor that still sounds quite tough, 330mm front rotors with twin piston brakes, T700 auto, stylish body kit and nice SV Racing green colour which is almost british racing green. They're usually high km though but still can be a nice buy
