I can see where you are coming from GTFPV, the cheapest manual FG XR6 I can find seems to hover around $25k for a 2010 model with a few k's on it.
Now if Ford did what Merc are advertising and did a 50% now and 50% in 2 years with zero repayments in between then id put my fuel consumption concern to the side and be in a FG2 XR6T @ $45k no worries. I just dont fancy long term finance at the moment.

They are pretty aweful IMO
Handle like a 60s Cadillac, slow and arnt even that great on fuel. I averaged about 10l/100km on the highway, which isnt any better than my XR8. Quality isnt all that good either. Ive driven heaps and they all squeak and rattle atleast as bad as a Falcon. The CVTs get slow to change from P/R/D with a few kms on them. We've got two with 70k kms and they both do it, Nissan says its normal. But they wernt always that bad and the newer ones we have arnt as slow. Carpet is nasty, its like a Scotch Brite pad; the passenger footwell has a wierd void and the carpet sinks into it when you step on it. The luggage area makes a hell of a racket when driving around, and once you put something in there its always sliding around. Real great for the shopping!

Sorry fellas my opinion of the XTrail after just recently looking at one having gone shopping for the wifes long awaited upgrade from a very reliable kept together CRV !
CRV suited her needs veryvery well and was a 99 model ! just done on 116thou k's. She still was happy with it but I wanted something a little larger considering the kids keep growing go figure. Checked the XTrail - yer great pricing BUT I found it too cheap looking interior wise and just by closing the doors sounds tinny ! Crossed it off the list very easy, sure it returns fine in fuel etcetc but just too cheapish for me. Rav4 better built car for sure in comparo imo but overpriced for what you get. I would have gone another CRV for quality is there but she didn't want the same car again when push came to shove.

X Trail is just plain butt ugly, I've seen bulldogs that are more attractive...
CVT gearbox's are a pet hate of mine especially when married to a torqueless petrol engine and fitted to a vehicle with 1970's styling. Honestly if I have to drive a vehicle like an X Trail, would someone please shoot me and put me out of my misery. Cheap and very NASTY. Last edited by Rodge; 23-05-2012 at 04:02 PM. |

Looks aside why are people worried about performance and handling?
Its a car at a price and for what its meant to do, IMO drop the kids off and do the shopping, I am sure its more than up to the task. Ill agree with CVT though, wouldnt touch it with a barge pole.

I think it looks ok anyway. The new 2013 one looks very modern Nothing wrong with CVT, for economy, low noise/jerks and smoothness its unmatched |

gtfpv, if you try and stack up an XR6 against a narrow jap 4-cyl then of course you're gonna be better off financially. No one buys a new falcon because they have the lowest TCO! They buy a falcon because of a passion for driving, of which no-one who has this passion will be satisfied with an X-trail.
If you want a sensible jap 4-cyl and still want some luggage space, then buy a Toyota Camry. Far cheaper than an XR6 and still made in Australia too.

I have been saying it for year ... Ford needs to get realistic with their RRP prices ... nobody and I mean nobody ever pays full RRP price for any Falcon these days ... heck Ford is even struggling to sell the limited edition massively discounted models ...
As for you I would suggest to shop around, back in 2011 I got my XR6 brand new drive away for 33K and I think there is absolutely no reason why you cant do the same ... just shop around and look for dealers wanting to sell (especially end of financial year). |

The CRV is the pick of the bunch in terms of interior and looks... but i really didnt like the PLASTIC intake manifold! Smallest cabin... While the Xtrail looks a bit tacky inside with the plastic.. it does have move room then the CRV, not as much as the RAV4 i thought though.

Perhaps the EcoBoost Falcon is your answer. The consumption figure for the EcoBoost is 8.1l/100k compared to 8.5l/100k for the X-Trail and 7.8l/100k for the Camry.
I had a ride in the new Camry today and I did rate the interior at all. What really got me was the fake wooden paneling. That is soooo 1980s. |

i think it depends on what you want. while the X trail has its purpose it'll never be an XR6. so an X trail might not be your thing if you like the feel of driving a falcon. I rate most SUVs the same. practical but a lil boring too drive. just because a cars boring doesnt mean its a bad car. look at the camry for example. one of the most blandest looking cars out there but they are known for being reliable.

HERES A FEW FACTS IN THE FORDS FAVOUR THAT IM SURE ARE AMONG YOURS AND MOSTS CONCERNS.
The falcon is easily the safest as its the safest sedan in australia the tyres are cheaper then an xtrails Its MUCH more comfy and roomy in a falcon and thats just the front seats...rear xtrail seats are benchs compared to falcon xtrail is SLOW and loaded up even SLOWER and even worse then a loaded falcon interior controls are nowhere near as ergonomic as the falcons setup(although datedin falcon)its still not 99%hard plastic in your face not a single one of 3 friends i have that have current xtrails are by anymeans enthused or excited by driving their xtrails(ones an older one tho) not to mention you could probably take the falcon off ROAD |

Gtfpv...are your hitting manopause? Only when us men hit the hump could we have rampant feelings for something only a mother could love.
Serious, I think I'm there!!! I rent vehicles constantly....and in light of Hulks comment I remembered driving a new XR6 in Melbourne recently. I was changing lanes and the thought entered my head 'damn this thing hammers for a six, but it goes so well it's getting beyond what your average joe really needs'. I came around quickly and cancelled that thought, but with age the practical stuff just creeps in harder and poisons your mind! On the topic of the Xtrail....well priced and I'd it's your thing do it. But your friends may talk about you behind our back and what they'll be saying will NOT be pretty ;)

Forgot to mention, the XTrail suprised me off road, it was a bit low but the steep slippery hills it climbed and the beach i drove on, you would not have a hope in hell with a 2WD sedan
Of course if you going for a 2WD XTrail you can forget about above. The only other vehicle similar to check out are the Jeep Compact SUV's, real value and a mini GrandCherokee look [in one of them] |

I think the X-Trail looks good, nice and boxy, good family car.
Its funny how cars have gotten bigger that you can get away with a 'compact' suv or small car. I think when Holden brings out there Cruze wagon with a price of around 25grand on road, it will be in many peoples driveways. I still think its not fuel prices killing large cars its the purchase price. I really dont think cars like a base Falcon or Commodore should be much more than a AWD Forester at 31,990. |

If the Falcon was a global car, and the factory was pumping them out 24/7 they would be 10-15% cheaper at a guess. Which is why the Koreans and Japanese can stuff so much kit into a car and sell them at a price we can't possibly match... sheer buying and production power...

so the xtrail suits your needs. fantastic. go buy one. it doesn't automatically make the falcon a dud now does it!! maybe for you (or all the other falcon detractors) but how you can speak for everyone is beyond me.
this happens every time someone sings the praises of another car other than ford. people always find a way to turn it into a falcon bashing thread. the aussie car market has a lot of choice. if a car doesn't suit YOU, it doesn't make it a dud. also, why the hell would i buy a porsche 911 when the fg does everything i need it to do and has a bigger boot and is cheaper. |

The xtrail doesnt even figure into most suv comparo's because its pants. If its an SUV your after you'd be better off spending the extra folding on something else.
Hell a Skoda Yeti at $33-35k is streets ahead of an Xtrail, not mention thats also VW Tiguan territory which was the benchmark compact SUV till the release of the Mazda CX5. |

Given that we've done 44,000km in about 14 months since we bought the G6E, we could be looking at a new car in a years time (before the kilometers get too horrifying, but at least it's all highway work), and we're honestly torn about what to go for.
The missus actually loves the look of the forthcoming Toyota FT86, and to tell the truth, so do I. There's only the two of us, but occasionally we get visiting family come out and stay with us, so something with more seats can be a plus. We got bitten with the Landcruiser over running costs of a large fourbie...tyres, eye-watering servicing costs, etc...and even smaller fourbies are overpriced. The base model Prados we drive at work are nice, but they cost an arm and a leg. I do like the new Subaru XV...so that may be worth checking out when the time comes. Sad to say I might not buy another Falcon though...perhaps something else in Fords lineup..? |

True and Koleos version has a rear fog:-) Their accessories range is large, note the Koleos rear rubberised boot mat marked "NISSAN". I like accessory item 21 btw, Nissan don't have it, but do have a first aid kit too:- http://www.renault.com.au/CountriesD...s-Brochure.pdf

I would not buy an XT or an XR6 or Commodore or SV6, there are better cars out there for less money. The performance Ford and Holden's are a different kettle of fish and they do offer value for money since you have to compare it to a BMW, Audi, Merc etc which is double and triple the price. I hope that Commodore and Falcon do become world cars very soon so that we can have some decent car pricing here in Australia. I believe that local car manufacturing is artificially keeping the local market car prices high. It is pretty common sense really, if a Falcon (large car) costs you $35k for a base model, what if that Falcon was made in Korea and dropped $5000? You would have a flow on effect where the small and medium cars would have to lower their prices and we might get some legitimate world comparable pricing on our cars. |
