great buy.....theres a reason why the G6 series has won 3 of the last 5 car of the year awards...including this year. THEY ARE AMAZING. I too couldn't resist the urge and got myself the slightly quicker g6et. Still amzing tho. Shows how far ford has come when they can engineer such a well rounded large ecoboost 4cyl turbo sedan package so well. Oh did I mention the FG is still the SAFEST car you can buy in the used car market in aus...cudos I say

On the second hand market these are amazing value. 2012 BUILT G6 (not G6E) EcoBoost with under 10000kms can be had for about $25k.

From the feedback I was getting third hand through engineering mates at the proving ground was that the 4-cylinder Falcon handling was awesome, and far, far superior to the other Falcon models. I would believe it.

G6E Ecoboost is an awesome car. The best car in that market segment by far. The 2.0t is a better engine than the much loved 4.0. . If I was in the market for this type of car I'd have one without question.

It's a mindshift to go turbo 4 over n/a 6, but no more of a shift than was 4.0t over the 5.4 n/a back in 2004, And lots of people made that shift ok.

This is a car that will smack a 3.0 Commodore at everything. Ride, handling, NVH, fuel economy and the surprisingly acceleration. One was recently run at WSID, full of fuel, no mods. The whole lot with driver weighing in at just on 1,800kg. It ran a 14.6. With a reported 2 or 3 tenths this still in it.

Let's face it boost is the future. We have to embrace it. But when asked by one of the senior folk a Ford if I'd buy one, I answered , well maybe, when the 5.0 twin turbo Ecoboost comes out I'm in. They went all quiet. Lol

I've got the XR8 for my fun. This car was meant to be a cheap to run second car. And I only buy Aussie made cars! Its just a hang up I have. Though the G6ET is one amazing car! Sledgehammer in a suit!

I was going to buy either a new G6 Limited Edition Ecoboost or a XR6 EcoLPi till I came across this car. The thing that annoyed me about the EcoLPi was that it only comes with 17's and you cant get the limited Edition tweaks on the EcoLPi. Rubbish from Ford I think on the XR6. The G6E was out of budget till I got this deal. I though Demo's were considered a new car anyway?

As for Ford making a loss on the car, when you launch a new product most companies discount to get the product out there. For me personally, I paid $64500 for my XR8 10 years ago so Ford made a good margin on me back then (including options but I didnt get 10 cents off the price and then they dropped the price by $5k!). Got punished for being an early adopter then. I think we are now 1 All.

Sure will mate. Had cricket on today and didnt get a chance to get some pictures during daylight. I'll get them up tomorrow though I'm not sure how good resolution I can post up. Might link them to my Picasa account. The engine is lost in that bay!

A buzz box is a reference to the car, not the engine. My missus has a Mazda 3. It goes alright, but if you get up it, then it is noisy and makes a noise similar to a buzz. My 1965 mustang seems to have better sound deadening than it, and at least it makes a V8 roar when you get up it.

Great write up!

I find it quite annoyoing how that 4cyl E.B makes more power than what my I6 has...!
Wonder if the E.B will have the longevity of the I6, and i also wonder how that motor is to work on compared.

OP. Out of curiosity, how does the motor sound when you floor it?

Its a pity ford has no idea how to market this car or any other for that matter ,im thinking they want it to fail so they can just import the world car whatever that might be ,ive seen no adds in Queensland for this car ,bloody shame really as i love my local fords

Unfortunately EcoBoost engines are imported, and are in such demand in Europe and USA they can't waste money advertising a product they can't supply.

Doesnt sound too bad but you can tell its a 4. The amount of sound deadening used keeps things pretty hush even when floored. You can hear the slight turbo whistle as well. Doesnt sound too bad as mentioned but I think this engine would sound better in the Focus ST with the sound Symposer.

Edit: Removed quote that Flappist removed in previous post

I am looking for a cheap to run family car and test drove a New Gen Camry with 6 speed auto and it was a really good drive. Roomy, heaps of power 133kw and nice to drive. For around $33k you get heaps of features like keyless start, full electric drivers seat, reverse camra, dual zone a/c, cruise and all your normal stuff. just looking at a ecoboost Falcon now and maybe a G6E Ecoboost. If i get one i might remove the ecoboost badge and put a turbo badge on it, after all it would be a G6E Turbo wouldn't it

Have a drive of one and see what you think. I think it was plenty of power for a family car. Remember the Camry is quite light and the first VN commodore had 130 kw and EA Falcons only had 139kw. With its low weight and 6 speed auto with nice close ratio's and a fairly flat torque curve from the 2.5L VVti engine it gets along very well. We are just spoilt today with our 200kw family cars but this does come with a penality a more fuel use. The camry has an ADR figure of 7.8L per 100 which is not matched by any Falcon or Commodore. I am looking at an Ecoboost Falcon as well but they are far and few between second hand.

You'll love the extra space in the falcon if you want a family run about. I thought the Camry/Aurion is closer to the Mondeo size car (mid size VS full size) so you can expect slightly more fuel consumption from a bigger Falcon. Had a mate in the car last night, 6 foot tall, who was saying how comfortable the back seat was for him. Camry's are a little tighter I've found. But you are right, 7.8 lt/100 is tough to beat. However, if you like torque, you'll love the EcoBoost cause you have ALL your torque from 2000rpm! Makes it feel even lighter on its feet and makes it very drivable. The Toyota reaches its torque peak 2100 rpm later.

If you take a new one for a test drive, I'm sure that will help you decide if its worth hunting for a second hand EcoBoost in the first place (I think you might find it worth the hunt!)

Update!

Got to 10,000 kms yesterday! (I've gotta stop driving this car so much!) Nothing disappointing yet to note other than a little squeak from the windows when opening/closing the drivers side. Ford will be fixing that tomorrow.

Fuel consumption is sitting between 8.7 and 9.1 around town so far with the odd motorway travel. So the 8.5 claimed seems reasonable. I might add that I'm 100 kilos so I'm sure lighter people might see better figures.

I find occasionally putting some silicone spray on the rubber makes things glide smoothly with no noise.

Few people asked for a review after a few months of ownership and thought I'd update on the ownership thus far. I've got 20,000 kms on the car now and still love every minute of it! My sister has taken over driving it and is thoroughly enjoying the car as well!

I posted this up in another thread but will put the figures here to keep it all in the same place.

Drive from Brissy to Newcastle via New England 7.2 litres/100
Sydney to Brissy via Pacific highway 7.4 litres/100
Melbourne to Sydney on the hume 7.0 litres/100
Sydney to Canberra and back - 7.9 litre/100 with 5 adults (3 over 110 kilos) and luggage and driving around Canberra.

Mixed driving around town (motorways and traffic) on 98 I'm seeing roughly 9-10 litres/100

On E10, that moves to 10.8 around town.

Worst in peak hour for the entire tank saw numbers hit 12.8 litres/100 on E10. Happened only on 1 tank so not sure if it was just a bad run.

Very good numbers as far as I'm concerned for a large car I might add that I do have a bit of a lead foot and dont always drive efficiently.

Also, I had the car serviced at 15,000 kms for, wait for it, $215 at my local Ford dealer. This was a bit cheaper than the Capped Price Service but I've been going back to this dealer for 10 years and they really look after me. Am I allowed to say the dealer name? They have been AWESOME for the last 10 years I've been dealing with them.

Again, as said before, I'm loving this car and its very sad that Falcon will one day end, but in the meanwhile, I will still enjoy one of the best made Falcons ever made!

I forgot to mention, I had one warranty claim. The vinyl wrapping of the door trim pockets (bottom) started to peal off. They were replaced during the first service after Ford unsuccessfully tried to use a glue to fix the issue (not the dealers fault, they were told to use the glue first by Ford. Again the good guys at the dealer pushed to get the entire thing replaced which was done)

Great write up mate. Thanks for sharing it with us. Fantastic economy figures too.

They sound like a great car. It's just a shame that the only way we can take one for a drive is at a dealer.
I'd love to take one for a drive, but as I'm not in a position to buy one, I don't want to go to a dealer as I'd feel like I'm wasting their time.
Does anyone know if any of the rental car companies have the EB? That's the only way I can think of getting the chance to drive one.

Look forward to following your progress on this great car.

Agree with everything you say aside from the economy figures. I got stuck with a new Camry renter for a week last week and drove it from Perth to Albury and back via the coast getting mostly 5.9L/100km. Couldn't believe how good it was on fuel. I agree with the plenty of power comment too, for what it is anyway. Best handling fwd family car I've driven. It copped plenty of abuse around Pemberton with no under steer. Fuel use was still good even when getting up it. Impressive car and a lot for the falcon to live up to. If I needed a family car I'd struggle to pick the ford over the Toyota unfortunately.

Great shame that in Ford New Zealand's "infinite wisdom" the only version of the Ecoboost we get in New Zealand is the XT poverty pack. XT poverty spec is completly unacceptable to most private buyers and seeing as Fleets and Taxi's seem to have moved on to mid sized diesel's and hybrids I cannot understand why Ford N.Z. doesn't change their thinking and bring in the G6E versions of this Ecoboost for private buyers wanting a reasonably economical full size car ?
In my view, Ford N.Z. in a very, very small way have helped contribute to Falcon's pending demise

I bought one for the missus back in feb. I couldn't fault them at all. we got ours as a demo but the price was way to good to refuse I thought $20k off for 8k on the clock was bloody good considering that there were only two used ones available at the time
