True to some extent, but Jeep and VW created a new class act with their responses to their recent episodes in Australia. That hoary old law of successful business, "the customer is always right", is worth remembering - even if the customer sometimes isn't and it sticks in the craw, it's better to swallow it and stay in the good public perception game.

I looked at the Jeep as a crossover replacement for Territory and its very meh. No loss.

At least we now know the answer to why the neighbours are missing for so long in the "they bought a Jeep" advertisements - they're stuck away somewhere waiting for it to be repaired. Advertising backfire.

Anyone remember that bloke who wrote Lemon all over his BA Falcon and drove it around? surely those that did would not have purchased a Ford since then if they won't buy a Jeep now?

Fact is, our favourite brand has exactly the same issues and gets away with the same customer treatment, in fact Ford Aus in the past are far from being a shining light in customer support and thats exactly why they are targeting this issue now.

That's no excuse for Jeep though, their CEO has recognised this and is supposedly putting plans in place to improve the ****aution so we will see what happens...

New2ford, as much as I like the Territory, it's a little old school now and just can't compete with the GC bang for buck wise which is the one I assume you looked at?

If a car retains a practical design and dynamics advantage over its competitors, it never becomes old school imho.

The Territory is still after 10 years the driving benchmark. Jeep (or anything short of a BMW or Porsche) just doesn't have the same driving experience. Territory is wider inside, has greater headroom, considerably larger luggage capacity and is a tad lighter than the Jeep. If an industry benchmark is set, the rest of the industry should aim to improve on that, not remain the same or go backwards.

But maybe the Jeep now has a little more jewellery on it which a lot of buyers see as constituting the bang for bucks. But the underlying technology and design is less sophisticated. I'm looking for something that equals or betters the Territory (as a crossover) and Jeep isn't it. In fact it's very hard to find anything that does.

I bought a jeep. Couple of weeks back I got a letter telling me it might catch fire due to an electrical fault, but they have no parts to fix it. Then last week I take it in for a lift kit and the ball joints are stuffed after 25,000km. Its not even been offroad. The shop who specialise in modifying jeeps told me they've seen jeeps with under 15,000kms the same. Still, its a good platform to build a decent car.

The video reminded me of half the reason why he refused.
They made the offer after four years of constant dramas and not to many klms because it was getting fixed all the time. After 4 years the car is only worth a fraction of what he paid.
The main reason was he could not live with the fact they would onsell it to some poor mug. He couldnt live with that and that is very comendable. He would rather take a huge dollar hit.
Other car companies missed a golden oppertunity on destruction day. I would have rocked up with a brand new Suv for him if i ran a yard. Great publicity missed

Fair enough but most definitely the Terri's underlying technology is less sophisticated than the GC, it's based on an aging car based chassis with aging engines and an old 6 speed auto (all still decent, I have an FG XR8 too).

GC sits on the W166 Mercedes chassis introduced in 2011, has ZF's latest 8spd auto, and it's newer V6 petrol i'd argue is smoother than the mighty 4.0 Falcon engine although is on par economy wise, down on torque and up on power. Terri's 2.7 diesel (140kw/440nm, 8.8/100) is no match for the GC's 3.0 (184kw/570nm, 7.5/100).
Weight wise, I see the AWD Terri is 2,107kg's and the GC 4WD is 2,084kg's, big difference here is the GC has real offroad capability.

Tech wise (call it bling, jewellery etc if you like), the Terri is, along with is underlying technology, last generation as it's interior also. no front park sensor availability, no adaptive CC, no lane change warning, no electric tailgate, no keyless start/sensor entry, no rain sensing wipers, no heated seats and i'm not sure of the new model has memory seat back and steering height/reach incorporated?

4 things the Territory has and/or I prefer over the GC -
1. It drives more like a car (I actually wanted a more upright drive but that is personal preference as I already have a car)
2. Definately, interior space is superior (friggin American are expert and doing inverse Tardis')
3. It has the beautiful Ford oval in its grille ;)
4. Aussie made and a damn good effort in it's time (thanks to the late great Mr Polites)

Unfortunately for the Territory, buyers are seeing the GC in the same light as me and trust me, after something like 14 Fords (i've never bought anything but Fords), I wanted to stay with the blue oval and my next car will be a new 'Stang so it was a hard decision

As for Jeep customer support, if my GC has the same issue as this blokes, i'll crowd fund and do the same

I understand what you're saying and I won't be buying a new Territory for some of those negative reasons, notably the ageing outfit (Ford could have updated all of that but let it go). The problem is finding something else that equals it on your points 1 and 2 which rate highly for me.

Jeep ticks a lot of boxes on paper but it somehow falls short of the X factor, probably because of the American thing. Even though US cars have got a lot better (probably from experiencing the German cars assembled and sold there), they still don't completely understand what makes a good car. Then these stories about Jeep reliability, attitude and costs start coming in ....

It does have rain sensing wipers and front parking sensors.

We don't actually know the full details apart from one article I found its all pretty one sided. In the Article I did find Jeeps states the vehicle was in for repairs for a fraction of the Total time that Mr Woods claims. at 4 years the car is out of warranty, prior to that Jeep claimed they fixed all issues under warranty. The offer to buy back would have come about because the repairs would now have a cost to the dealership.

My mistake, its certainly does. Rain sensing wipers available on Titanium (standard on base model GC) and front sensors appear to be standard across the range for Terri (not available on base GC).

new2ford, can see where your coming from, the GC is more floaty in it's ride than the Terri and is disappointing storage wise, we go camping and I can fit just as much crap in my FG as the GC!

for all of jeeps issues - i love my GC diesel. its a great car. its a generation ahead of a lot of cars and 2 generations ahead of current ford offerings (and i love fords). the fit and finish and quality of materials is excellent and its is comfy as hell - i,ve been in teritorys and they are no where near as comfy and i literally hate the "small falcon" interior - particularily the seats but i am 6'4. there is not one day i get in it and regret my decision (even with the cost of that damn radiator and side mirror and **** service - which was no worse than the service i got from ford, probably better so far)

i average 7l/100 and it does off road stuff pretty good. i would have had to have spent over 100k to come close from another make. ive done 60k in 12 months and as per my falcon its taken a pounding and is holding up well (stupid kangaroos dont help but at least it drives over wombats not through them). even the carpet inside it 2 steps above the falcon and easier to clean.

I think the old boss of chrysler australia got punted cause of her attitude to customers (i am just reading into things) there were more than a few jeeps refunded and more than a few court cases that should have been resolved in a better way. Would i have bought a 2012 jeep? nope. 2014, yep

Absolutely agree on the fit and finish, quality of materials (carpet, plastics etc) in the GC is much better than my FG XR8 (a car I absolutely love even after 6 years), Mercedes had a lot to do with this in the GC and some components I believe is actually shared with the ML350, power window switches being one from memory.

Also agree on buying a Jeep in 14 vs 12, I watched the situation for a while
and bought mine in Jan, their other issue was lack of parts supply, this was resolved recently too, haven't had the opportunity to test it though.

That's great fuel economy, mines giving between 8 and 8.5/100 in peak traffic 4 days/week, dropping to circa 7 on the open road and sucked 11/100 when offroad (beach) which I might add, did it with ease.

I know a few GC owners, 2 x SRT's (2011/2014's) and 1 2012 turbo diesel, all incidentally driven by sales/technicians for their work, and all love em and had no issues so I believe Jeep have finally got a decent vehicle with the GC, just needs the previously lacklustre CJD Aus to truly have lifted their game to match the vehicle.

Of these 13 recalls, seven affect the current-generation model that has been on sale since early 2011. The rest affect preceding versions, going as far back as a build year of 1993.

The reasons for these recalls include potential problems with the fuel pump relay, the key, rear turning lights, brake booster, fuel tank, vanity lights and the adaptive cruise control. A number of modules have also been potential issues, including those linked to the airbags and steering."

I bought a 300 SRT 12 months ago and just love it!!. 15,000kms and no problems. I'd rather my car be recalled and sorted than being swept under the carpet. The guy who had his Jeep crushed was the previous generation. Whilst the current gen has had some issues, it's so much superior to that gen of Jeep it's not funny.

Do you use the intermittent setting?

Don't know about you mate but when i'm driving, I can't stand wipers running on a dry windscreen so in stop/start showers, hard/light rain, I find myself messing about with the intermittent setting/slow/full speed on my other cars.
I find the rain sensing wipe a great feature.

i bought a SUV recently. Had a good look at the GC and was very impressed at the standard features, especially the Overland model. However the lack of one important feature resulted in me having to buy something else. I have a disability and my left leg is in a permanent brace and I need a foot rest when I'm driving. The GC has no left leg foot rest and I found the footwell quite cramped for this size of vehicle. I ended up buying a 2012 Volkswagen Touareg. Fantastic car, loaded with extras, great finish, good towing ability and powered by a fantastic diesel motor. A very underrated car that more people should look at.
