^^ Just on that the Subaru is the only Diesel CVT That I know of.
how does it perform?
CVT seems a perfect match for keeping a diesel in the relatively small power band they have.

So far pretty stoked. A little different when you first take off from a standing start and giving it more revs only seems to make more noise than actually going any faster. I found it interesting when I took a CVT Diesel Forester for a test drive and checked what gear it was in at 60 kph it was already in 6th ( top for the Forester where the Outback has 7). I would never have been in that high of a gear in our 6 speed Manual Diesel Forester. Keeping the Manual in its power band ( most efficient) felt like I was constantly changing the gears almost like rowing a boat.

Never thought I would, say this when I first heard of CVT's but I would love a CVT in my Territory.
Must be better than a confused 6 speed. plus make it quicker & more economical.

I think you have it around the wrong way. Its Diesel engines that (will have) are in trouble meeting the emissions tests. Merc has already said it can't meet the next set of regs with their Diesel engines. Others have already been caught cheating the existing ones.

Could be a while before we see anything like this in Australia.

I dunno.

I think the modern diesel has a bit left in yet.

Drive some modern european diesels and they're difficult to match.

1000kms per tank 13 sec quarter mile, smooth and refined.

DPF filter removes most of the nasties, CO2 levels are low.

If had to choose I'd get one.

In the Outbacks the 4cyl Diesel and 2.5 petrol are euro6 compliant where the 3.6 H6 is only euro5 compliant, it does have heaps more power though.

Haha, no I was commenting in comparison to the drivability of my GT-B. Although I have to admit, the Outback diesel is still on my list of considerations as a replacement car.

If it's in regards to emissions we are looking at this wrong in my opinion.

I stated this in another thread actually. Many years ago Mr Dyson gave a lecture at UWS for the design students (I was in this course) and he said he has developed technology that can clean / filter the air so well that they have been able to separate cigarette smoke from the air.

Something similar could be developed for placement inline with the exhaust after the DPF that is a user serviceable item...

I tell you what... I'm on my 3rd turbo diesel vehicle and loving them. The other car in the stable is a turbo petrol and I still prefer the oil burner.

I had a diesel Pajero, believe it was the model where Mitsu introduced the DPF.

I will NEVER ever buy a diesel again.

With maintenance, servicing and fuel (currently diesel is more expensive than petrol where I am per litre) costs it does not justify at all the supposed mileage gains over a petrol car. Not to mention the horrid noise they generate and the odour they emit.

You shouldn't judge all diesels by a Pajero.

I have a turbo diesel Grand Cherokee, servicing is expensive (at Jeep dealers), it requires no maintenance and the fuel economy is in the 8.5 - 9.0/100 mark with city driving.

Noise wise, I mostly love the sound of the diesel (they are far more refined nowadays with very little clatter) and there is no discernible diesel odour - DPF equipped, I particularly love the way it delivers its power too.

V6 diesels & the 5cyl Rangers sound really good IMO. "refined"

In contrast our Prado sounds like it should be ploughing fields.

I was going to reply but for my sanity I won't.

I'll leave this sentence.

You pay a premium for a diesel, you DO NOT get the supposed cost saving benefits over a petrol powered car over the life you own the vehicle.

How can you make such a blanket statement?

Don't you need to factor in things like the type of work the vehicle does, the km it does in a year and other variables???

If I was doing a lot of heavy towing for my job and driving 35,000km a year would petrol really be a better choice?

I do a lot of towing with my diesel vehicle, cheaper & more economical than using a petrol vehicle, obviously by your post you purchased wrong vehicle for your own requirements.

New Pajeros are junk.
A dual cab ute is smoother to drive than a Paj.

In my case I paid less for a new diesel than I could have purchased a Petrol for. & I travel over 30,000 a year anyway

Same here except I do around 23,000k's per year in it. I calculated I save about $700/year purely in fuel economy based on the diesel using 3l less/100 vs petrol and diesel costing on average, 7cpl more. Servicing using Jeeps (outrageous) pricing over 72 months costs $1,331 more for the diesel which is covered in the first two years of ownership.

One thing I haven't calculated is resale value, but i'm fairly sure the diesel GC will be more in desirable than the petrol so should hold its value at least as good as the petrol.

Interesting that Mercedes are releasing new diesel engines -

I thought Adblue helps with the emissions... Or is that a myth?

Thought it makes it actually not that bad with the use of Adblue.

You'd have to concentrate the stuff.

Pee is 2-4% Urea but Adblue is 32.5%

It reduces the nox emmissions yes. Its used to comply to emmission laws. But its costly to add to cars....mind you diesels are more costly to build then a petrol.

When I bought my Jeep, there was 2 engine choices. 3lt CRD or 5.7lt Hemi, neither had a premium over the other.

Mine sits on 9.5lt/100 around my hilly area whilst an old customer of mine who had the Hemi their avg was on 18lt/100.

Plus now mine has a diesel chip and 3" exhaust it makes around 220kw and 670nm.
A DPF delete and retune may be on the cards later this year too.....

Hehe, dunno mate. The thing does have a DPF and when I start it up in the garage, there's only the slightest of burnt diesel (unlike a 2015 diesel Sante Fe or diesel Territory which did stink), plus it has a charcoal cabin filter (petrol gets paper) so i'm all right Jack ;-)

Prefer the simplicity in ownership and maintenance of owning NA petrol, but there is definitely space for diesel in Australia - the huge distances and transport fleet means its going to stay.

Plus, diesel can be generated from coal, and from sunlight through oil yielding algae. No brainer for Australia.

Love my Diesel Utes and 4WD's (I refuse to say SUV)

Currently I have a DMAX (work provided but I'd own one) and my wife has a diesel outlander, great power / economy wouldn't say maint costs are excessive.
