I've also seen Kombis fitted with 4.4 P76 V8s.

And here's a crazy build from Kombi Club forum, a guy is mid-mounting a Rover V8 and hooking it up to an AWD system... same guy is also building a Rover V8 trike with Alfa Romeo transaxle and Watts link rear end

What about a 253 powered Commer?

This had a 327 5speed in it but that got stripped for a tractor project

The 253 / traumatic came from a country car and has been in my shed for a few years so it got donated

I remember seeing a Holden V8 in a Toyota Hiace. He pulled into a servo with overheating issues I was filling up at.

At the risk of sounding like a huge geek, I love the original TS3 opposed-piston engine in Commers. I would have loved to see it developed more. I know some companies are trying to revive OPOC engines

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/2014...t-twelve-dyno/ Here's an explanation of the TS3 engine here. (Don't let the title fool you). Huge power and torque outputs from that capacity for the era, for a diesel no less.

I once saw in a car yard a HQ panel van, that had a Monza front end with a Ford 429 V8 in it. This was back in the late 80's

They were a great two stroke engine with the same potential as the two stroke Detroits (with a bit of tweaking) This is where the Rootes type blower originated from.

I red about that in a street machine when it was first built. It was built by the back owner of castlemaine rod shop. His other toy was a twin 6/71 supercharged high roof model t.

A mate of mine put an RR gas turbine into a Chrysler voyager.

The interesting bit is he kept the stock motor and when he fires up the turbine it drives the rear wheels via a chain drive. It's not quick but a lot of fun.

Later models of the p-51 were merlin powered, approx 1700-1800hp.
Surplus motors after the war were pushed much higher than 3000hp, sometimes in excess of 5000hp, but very short lived as they were designed to operate all day every day at lower HP.
I would like to know if anyone used a griffon engine in anything other than a flyer.

It amazes me how big those engines & the merlins were, the planes probably needed 1000 hp just to get that weight in the air!

best engine sounds ever

Don't know about pt boats, but a v-10 cut down version of a merlin was used in tanks.

Some were powered by the Napier Sabre which was a legendary engine in the Typhoon/Tempest when it was finally fixed.

The Napier I believe was the most powerful inline engine in WW2 @3000hp stock and up to 3500hp.

It's an interesting engine, an H pattern using sleeve valves.

The Napier Deltic was another really interesting engine that powered a lot of fast patrol boats.
The Deltic ended up being a 3000hp locomotive engine in the 50's when the best the yanks could do at the time was 1500hp from the EMD576.

As far as I know there is only one running example of the sabre left anywhere in the world, it's a shame they were sold for scrap. It's in a Hawker Sea Fury.
Looks like they found another one!
