Fact: Nothing deprieciates quicker than a new car in it's first 18 months.
Anyone walking into a dealer to buy a new car knows this. Hence new cars being owned for 3 to 5 years with exception of company cars who a) get discount on purchase and b) get tax rebate, so they can affort to return the car after 12 months.

Guys get some perspective.....
If no one bought new cars then ther would be no second hand ones. If you cannot afford a new one the buy a second hand one, I did this for years until I could afford to buy a new one. In the beginning it was Lasers then Fairmont then Fairmont Ghia and the last 3 have been FPVs. I buy them because I want to, no other reason. I drink Corona rather than domestic because I want to (resale value on used beer is not very good either). When I buy ANYTHING, resale value is not even remotely on the radar, I am not buying to SELL, I am buying to OWN. If the current system does not suit then don't buy, your choice...... Remember this is NOT a dress rehersal, he who dies with the most unspent money is just as dead and he who spent the lot.......(except he who spent probably had more fun) |

I bought my Mk2 GT for over $15k less than than what the original owner paid for it 4 month beforehand. 2 months on and it's now worth more than $5k less than what even I paid for it as a trade in. Point is, even bargins can put you behind. Cars are enjoyable liabilities..
To be honest I find that FPV's do a reasonable job of holding their market value, but I think this is mainly driven by the owners..lol:voldar02:

I'm not complaining, with the runouts, cash backs, discounts and fleet discounts, free leather, free this and that....they are throwing the BA's away. This got me into a new Typhoon for nearly 20K less then full retail.... With what I got mine for I could not even find a 2nd hand Typhoon for the same $$$.....Go Ford you good thing.. I could never have got my Typhoon unless the BF came out... and I don't intend to sell her for many many years if at all.

It could be a lot worse, you could buy a Magna and lose 66% of its purchase price in 3 years. Resale value is 32%, compared for low 50's for Falcon and Commodore.

Depends how you work it out, Ford say $2500 bonus, but retail pricing isnt followed by dealers, so at the end of the day dealers could be partly to blame for this.. All i know is used cars here have XR6 Nas for 33 grand with 15kays (which is what they just about owe them) and new cars are selling the same thing brand new for $32,880..
Doesnt make sense.

Well, its only on BA models or equivalent, and the dealers already have stocks of the BF. It's not like three months ago we didn't know there was an update coming. Before anyone buys a new vehicle there should always be research on part of the buyer as to the products life cycle. For example.
A mate bought an S500 Merc new a couple of years ago (2003), and asked at the time of negotiaition when the next model is due to come out. They told him late 2005. He accepted this and bought the car knwing it would not be superseded in the showroom for at least two years, or superseded on the road for at least 3 years; by which stage he will be looking to replace the vehicle anyway. It's all a bit of a gamble, like when people went and bought the BA, knowing that it was the first of the new model; whereas the BA MKII was loaded with alot more fruit for the same price. If you want to have the latest model you will always cop heavy depreciation, especially on locally built cars that fleet operators use. It could be worse, you could be one of the many Holden owners who are going to have all sorts of trouble selling their Holdens when the VE comes out, and the fleets flood the market with second hand VZ's (because the fleet market is predominantly comrised of commodores due to large fleet discounts). This is where alot of sweeteners are thrown toward the fleets to make them update their cars, in order to make the new model seem like a runaway success i.e. "Holden have sold 4500 commodores in the first month since the VE went on sale" - could mean Holden sold 500 to private buyers but the remaining 4000 went to fleets. Market perception however is that they sold 4500, must be a great car. That's why we have the second hand car market going through phases of oversupply and less demand, effecting prices negatively.

I think it really comes down to what your definition of a "good buy" is.
My car is a used one, allbeit an immaculate example of one though. Would I have preferred a new one? Of course. Why? Because nothing beats driving a new car out of the lot and putting the first kms on it yourself. There's nothing wrong with buying a used one, it saved me packets and I dare say the next one will be a used one too, but if i could justify and afford the price I would buy a new one in a second.
