I know a lot of people bag the Firestones but I had exactly the same probs with the standard 15" rim. I bought a pair of Firestone Wideovals 215/60/15 I've been on them for about six months and let me tell ya I found these puppies stick really nice in the wet, I have not had the same problems as what I did with my old Yokahamas.

In my humble opinion I like the Firestones better than their parent company Bridgestone. I know not everybody likes them but you just have to find what suits your driving style and your vehicle best.

Cheers

I now this an AU forum but,
I had a similar problem, my tyres had gone hard over time and I nearly killed myself a couple of times in one day driving home. Well that was in a EA CFI, they were great fun but dangerous, now i've got hankook not sure of type but they only loose traction if you try and do it.

LOL Finally someone knows what its like....

Foxtrot im in exactly the same boat as you.. AU1 XR6 5speed and NO traction in the wet, 3rd gear 70km/h and it will break out in a straight line if you get on it..
2000rpm 2nd gear around a corner and you have have to catch/correct it..
Idle off the line accelerate a little and the **** end is all skatey..

Its gotta be the live beam rear end, light car, camber/road surface and just the car itself..Does this to me even when running decent tyres and suspension.
Ive become used to it now.. and to be honest its actually pretty fun lol.

Glad to know actually haha...
Was really fun when the cops came up next to me and eyed off me and the car.. i think they saw me but they didn't pull me over... it was on a slight rise so i even used the hand brake just to MAKE sure i didnt get any spin next to the cops lol.

Well im posting some piccys in that AU section and I'll write a bit up so come check it out. (You know what i mean the secion for pics & that)

EDIT: The above does not make much sense.. I meant after I slid out i got stopped at red lights then up came the cops.

And apologies I am in msn mode for talking.. I will try and snap out of it and stop posting like dis u kno wat i mean

Agreed.

If you swap them around and it's no better at all, then you get an idea if indeed it's the tyres or not.

It will cost you nothing but a bit of time to do it!

I will never run SAVA's on any car I ever own again, I had them on the celica and that was.. to put it bluntly.. ****ed..
Worst tyre ive ever driven on, I wouldnt even consider putting them on the XR, if a 80kw front wheel drive celica cant put power to the ground in the dry AND get tail happy,(ex missus even spun it out and smashed) theres no way they are going on a rear wheel drive car with twice the power.

What he said.

[Edit] If your think the wheelspin is bad, wait until you can't stop. Most of your braking happens via the front wheels.

Nice looking XR.

Regarding the Silverstone Evol 8, see:http://www.autoworld.com.my/forum/al...stone+EVO+8%3F

Mate, dunno how much you're paying for the 18's, but if money is really an issue I'd honestly suggest you buy a good set of 17s, rather than a dodgy set of 18s.

Acceptable, but not top-line, 235/45x17s will generally cost about a grand (eg Dunlop SP Sport 300A, Bridgestone GIII, Yokohama C-drive). Any of these tyres will be far stickier and safer than the absolute crap you're talking about buying. You might be able to negotiate a tyre/wheel combo for around $1,300 - $1,400.

It's your life, along with whoever else is in the car, and whoever you hit, that we're talking about. If you've got dud rubber at the time you really need good stuff, bling doesn't count for much.

There my wheels... i bought them and will get them soon.

He also has 17inch available I didn't check but i'd say with the same tyres..

I thought that was a good price for the wheel and tyre combo.

The Silverstones can't be that bad?

Go for 18's, they fill the guards more and look heaps better, im wishing I went 19's to be honest, the 18's even look small to me..

Tyres for 18's go for Nanking NS2's.. $150 a tyre. Great tyre for the price.. and its the longest lasting tyre ive ever had lol.. lasted just under a year and I havent gone easy on them.

Friend of a friend recommends Marshal's and he can get them very cheap, $110.
GT radials, I personally love these tyres, I think they are one of the best Ive ever driven on but cant always afford to pay near $300 a tyre every 5 months..

Maybe you could try lowering the tyre pressures a bit, it might help a little.

raising the tyre pressure for wet roads can actually help to get better traction, by upping the pressure it opens up the tread grooves some more and allows more water to escape from under the tyre, but if it's sh#t rubber, nothing will help

My brother in law liked Nankangs, some guys here like them too.

Marshal tyres are made in the same factory as the new Bob Jane Xenon Z1's. Marshal is owned by Khumo. The Bob Jane guy told me this week that the Xenon Z1's are about the same as the Maxxis MAV1's I had fitted. They are $150 per tyre retail. The Xenon's are the same.

I have found this week that the Maxxis tyres are fairly quiet, although they are brand new. Again the Bob Jane guy said the Maxxis would be much, much better than SP3000's. They are also about $50 cheaper!

Some food for thought.

I had nankangs on a V6 VS, they were the worst tyres I have ever owned, they had very little wet weather grip and turned square and noisey after a bit of use, the side walls cracked, but they had plenty of tread left on them.

Actually Ratter.. come to think of it the Nankings dont have much shoulder strength in them.. the edges tend to wear down alot faster than the middle, yes even with the correct tyre pressure and spot on wheel alignment. But havent had too many problems with them in the wet. And I thought they were fairly decent in the dry.. (have nothing on GT Radials though)
Xenon Z1's ive heard are alright.. but having said that every tyre place has their brand they promote.

You can take whatever a Bob Jane sales rep says with a grain of salt. They just want to move whatever they have most of in stock or whatever they have the highest margin on.

I used to go off my head when BJ boys kept trying to unload Kleber (remember them) onto me.
