This one had been converted to a 5L Windsor from an E series, that had been converted to a carb.

I remember seeing a 351 clevo powered LWB Transit back in the vanning days, Bedford's were more popular in the big vans though...

Open up driver side door and jam a 4x2 on the ground I reckon, she was pretty rough

The inside of the cabin he had created a cover for the engine, it all fit pretty snugly in there - it looks like it sat pretty far back in there.

All Transit 6 cyl were low compression 200 until July 1978 when the low compression 4.1L X Flow came in with the new model type, the best looking one.

All 6 cyl were Log 6cyl in Transit and F100 until July 1978, then the X Flow 6 came in due to ADR Laws for them came in.

All 6 cyl Transits were 3sp manual or 3sp auto.

I would think more Transits were sold in Australia then the CF Bedford, that's from 1968 to 1980 years I am talking about, after that the newer Transits were crap.

You would not put a 250 six in a MK I because the diff ratios were to low for such. the MK II got a higher ratio diff with the big 4.1L.

Australia got the 1.7L V4 and 2.0L V4 in the MK I high and low compressions in both I do believe.

Australia Post had all Transits I believe and they were V4 chaff cutter only I believe. and everyone I know of that drove them talk about them V4 blowing up.

All tho I know a dude who had a real big MK I Transit van and claimed it to be a 250 6cyl. But I have never seen any info of such a factory beast.

I do not know of any factory 4sp manual MK II.

I do not know of any Australian produced V6 in a Transit MK I ever here, the cost would be way more higher than our 200 log six for a start.

So our Transit took on the Holden CF Bedford that had a 173 low compression 3sp manual and a auto optional later with a 202 from mid 1978 on I believe.

I think from 1984 in the UK they got disc brakes on the front, you would have to convert one to disc to pass a roadworthy I would think with a 351 in it.

Err, Mick the pictured motorhome above is a 250 log engined mark 1 Transit.
Dual wheeled rear axles were higher. Disc front end (still didn't stop it)
But buying it SH I couldn't tell you who did the conversion way back in the 80s'

During the 70s -80s van scene I reckon I saw 3 to 1 ratio of Bedford to Transits.
CF Bedfords of that size were mainly hinged front doors compared to so many Transits with the siding ones.
Bedfords seem like a better van conversion than the Fords.
Commerciallly as a fleet vehicle I reckon the Fords were more popular.

Yep, most of those that modded big vans appeared seemed to choose the Bedford, even in stock form they were the better looking of the two IMO and hid their commercial roots better, the 351 LWB i mentioned above is the only modded Trannie that really stands out in my memory these days although I can recall quite a few Bedford's.

A workmate from Vic bought a Bedford ex show van and drove it back to Tom Price, originally when modded it had a 307/powerglide but had a 253 fitted at the time and had been completely gutted inside, it still had the flares and one piece lift up rear door along with the grafted in XC Fairmont square headlights/grill which was a popular mod with the CF.

Reading this thread regularly, makes me go drive a few of them that are in my shed! Sometimes the rare ones are not even that expensive...

I still have a few of the magazines from the 70's and 80's of such Vans all done up.
I think the reason why the van craze died was due to the Laws, so you could not just pull up and sleep in them like people once did, just pulling up anywhere.

I think the highest diff ratio for the Bedford was 3.9:1 and the dual rear much lower around 4.57:1 with little wheels.

Looked it but I doubt it.
The van craze died because of the lack of the big 3 V8 vans.
I think the mini trucks craze followed. When was the last time I saw one ????

I used to love the old grey Herald trucks in Melbourne in the 70's Sounded like they were V8's with an open exhaust

Yes mate, only had it about 18 months, we saved it off a farm. It was sitting a few years, pretty shabby with a blown trans. Have sunk a bit more into it than I would like; however still a bargain when compared to anything else from its era, yet alone newer.

Been very happy with it overall, its not a daily for us, just a holiday machine. Have put about 15,000km on it. Does 14l/100km and no more than 18 towing the stupid things this lets you!

I always wanted one growing up, no regrets so far!

Another car we havent seen for over 25 years.....the 'niki fiat' Definately a mid to late 90's car. We had a schoolmate whom would drive it to school and we would **** him off by picking his car up ( with 3 other mates )and carry it to odd locations - making it had for him to jump in and drive away. Always a good chuckle.......

Recently I saw: Nissan Micra; Daihatsu Charade on full Vic reg white-green plates starting with an 'E' so about 1990; rugged-looking 1970-ish Holden on full reg and a 1968-ish Fairlane on full reg B/W plates driven by a trend-setter in The Peoples' Republic of North Fitzroy. Also a nice HQ 1 ton'er.

No I think it was an optional engine for SS. You could choose either the SC V6 or the iron boat anchor 304.

Which was odd, cause you could also get an S with the SC V6.

Might have had something to do with the SS being a higher spec car than the S?

Apparently only about 250 of them made.

Growing up my neighbours had an hsv xu6, so the supercharged ecotec v6 dolled up to hsv spec. They had an early 90s porsche 911. The xu6 was rare, but i dont think it was for good reasons.

The XU6 became a bit of a running joke the second the Barra 182 came out with more power and torque.

So even a base model BA had more go than HSV's tickled supercharged V6.

It was dropped not long after.
