Saw my first example of the new model Yaris this morning.

How long has it been on sale? Anyway, that's the first one I've seen.

I saw a Nissan Urvan and a Mazda 121 recently. The 121 was an 1987-91 model (DA, apparently) and Wiki tells me that it was also sold here as a Festiva.

I have not seen a generation 1 Toyota Prius for several years.

I was really impressed with a mid 1990's Honda Legend coupe that I parked next to the other week. Thing was mint and just looked classy.

The problem was that the Laser was so successful, everybody thought badge-swapping was the way of the future.
Kind of ignore the point that the Laser was in reality a very different car to the 323. Although it was the same basic design, it was built locally with Taiwanese engines, and (due to huge Falcon sales) FoA could still treat it as Locally built for the purposes of import duties. That gave them a huge cost advantage, especially in an era of a plummeting AUD and skyrocketing Yen.

But Suddenly Nissan/Ford, and Holden/Toyota, thought they could run identical cars off a local assembly line, and just stick different badges on them.

Then there was the weird design.
Australian Buyers at that stage typically liked Hatchbacks in Small to Medium cars, and Wagons in Medium to Large. So Nissan & Ford came up with this Frankenstein that was half'n'half.

Dad bought the sedan, but even so it was just a 'meh' car. There was nothing outstanding about it. It didn't outshine the opposition in any way.
It's biggest competitors locally were the Magna and Camry (/Appollo), both of which had proper wagons, and which each offered something better.

One of the tradies working on my neighbours place drives a ba v8 xls falcon ute. Even when they were new there wrent many with the 3 valve. By no means is this ute in good shape, but its in its natural environment, work ute not poor mans coupe.

Probably the only two sold in the country.

Mazda 323 vs Ford Laser ? different as in that the Mazda was a much better car, Jap built engine etc, think that the Mazda went better as well and Ford were trying to work out how to build the Laser, as the Japs had a much different system to build such a thing I believe reading years ago.

My wife had a 323 Mazda once.

A mate's mum had a Laser twin carby job that was the one to have back in the days if you were into such rubbish, but the twin carby I think was the only one that stood out above the 323 back then. Mates mum got the next model Laser and they said it was just rubbish.

But I knew another who had the twin carby Laser and he was flat out on the highway and as truck went by the other way he nearly lost control of the Laser, he got blown off the road !

2nd hand these things are a bit of a bargain IMO..before I got the Honda I was thinking of a TDI sedan for a daily and that infiniti looked the goods against a 5 series.

Some kind of pre mazda ford mini pickup, like old cortina or the US equivalent of that or zephyr mk4 etc is my guess.
Looks really cool. Looks like datsun 1200-1500 sized.

Saw a Ford Probe last week!

I owned one. Loved it as a 19yo - sounded sweet, enough go easily for Ps and brilliant gearbox.

Was more reliable than my Falcon Turbo (I loved that too but more as a super quick family barge with the WORST INTERIOR EVER MADE)
