I actually have that brochure and my car is identical except for the wheels which I am looking for at the moment. Mine is Flame Red, Houndstooth Doe Skin Interior and 4.9ltr Manual. Here are a few pics of my interior. |

Thanks for the responses.
The 1977 XC Coupe Wheels are the same as the ZJ/ZK Fairlane and they are the Volante style. They are different from the GXL wheel. Luckily I still have the spare so I am only after 4 for my Coupe and a set of GXL wheels for my GXL. They will turn p one day. Here is a pictire of the Volante (the spare from my coupe). Regards Wayne |

I am another one who thought that XC GXL & XD Ghia rims were the same and were called "Volante", as per the rims shown in the brochure above.

The Volante wheel pictured only ever appeared on Fairlane variants from ZJ/ZK. The XC Fairmont Coupe had the same alloys as the GXL Sedan originally. Take a look at the brochure scan. This alloy continued into the XD Fairmont Ghia range. This rim never had a name as such and were never an aftermarket item. I always refer to them as 'GXL Alloys" and people know what I mean. The Volante could also be bought aftermarket I believe through ROH. Cheers, Craig.

You are correct but the Volante (as pictured in my last post) was the only alloy available on the 1977 coupe. The GXL continued with the other style. The 1977 brochure states this. When I get a chance I will scan that section and post it up. Regards Wayne |

Just to clear a few things up here:
The XC Fairmont GXL came with the "Alloy Sports Road Wheel" (its proper name) as standard, as did the XC Fairmont Hardtop. For a limited time only in 1977, the XC Fairmont Hardtop was fitted with the "Alloy Volante" wheel. I believe for a period of 3 to 6 months (Steve will correct me here if I am wrong). The Fairmont Hardtops then reverted back to the Alloy Sports Road Wheel until final Hardtop production. In 1978, as a run out of the Fairlane, the ZH Fairlane 'Sportsman' was born. This car was fitted with the Alloy Volante's. Note that this was still a JH37 code, not the JH63. The JH63 Sportsman was that of the ZJ and ZK Fairlane Sportsman (also fitted with Alloy Volante's but named differently - see below). This same style Alloy Volante was also being currently used on the Cortina's. Come the XD, the Faimont Ghia was fitted with the Alloy Sports Road Wheel (GXL wheel as we know it), but the "Volante Sports Alloy Road Wheels" (Alloy Volante's - ZH Sportsman and interim Fairmont Hardtop wheel), was an option for the XD's. At the same time, the ZJ Fairlane Sportsman was fitted with the Volante Sports Alloy Road Wheels as standard. With respect to the XE Fairmont Ghia, it now had the 15" Snowflakes. Whereas the ZK Sportsman had the same Volante Sports Alloy Road Wheels as the ZJ Sportsman. Note that the runout ZK Fairlanes had the Sports Alloy Road Wheels (GXL style) wheels as well. With the XE, you could still option the "Alloy Road Wheels" (GXL style) if you liked. In summing up, there were two types of mag wheel commonly available at the time; - Sports Alloy Road Wheel - Alloy Volante Road Wheel And the names changed slightly throughout 1977 - 1984. And yes, there was also the Globe, but we are not talking about those at the moment. |

Not having a cage, I normally play in the low 11's. For a car primarily setup for straight line, man handling it around Queensland Raceway was great fun. Particularly with a full spool diff and skinny front tyres..... Did someone say front wheel drifting.....

Scanned a few pix of the coupe I owned back in the 90's. A Fairmont with continental roof, originally a 302, auto, Borg Warner, but I put in a 351 with tunnel ram and 2x735 Holley's, FMX and disc brake LSD 9inch diff, all donated from a ZG Fairlane I wrote off.
