That bad boy is lacking a few hundred more ponies to power it down the dirt strip!

I'm interested to see if he's checked the real weight and balance of this thing!!

The USSR (sorry it wasnt russia when it was built lol) built quite a few different versions of these beauties.... as big as a 747 just 30m from the gound at over 250knots is pretty scarey and impressive!
Just at the end of the clip you get to see the LUN (the aircraft in the pictures that Peuty posted) firing one of its antiship missiles...

Interesting read about a P-40 that crashed in the Sahara during WWII and has only just been recently found 70 years later.

Just finished reading this book...

Punching Out: Stories of High-Speed Ejections
by James Cross

A great read for aviation enthusiasts, with some really funny stories. Like the RAF pilot who ejected from his Harrier over Germany after a bird strike, but the plane then continued flying for 30+ minutes until it ran out of gas and crashed in Denmark.

Thoroughly recommend.

Will check that book out for sure, thanks Magpie.

Also, good to see that the RAAF have finally done something about a Caribou replacement - C27J Spartan. 10 of them.

Yes but basing the whole lot in richmond??? Prefer they were moved here to Tsv... The army here used the caribou quite a lot, plus they are handy during disaster relief etc...

But the C-27 is the only obvious choice.

The basic design has been around for nearly 30yrs now as it was orginally the G-222, built and designed in Italy.

Ha yes, its often referred to as a Mini Herc.

In order for it to be more sellable to the US (it was a contender for the Joint Cargo Aircraft, for the US army and USAF) the Italian company joined forces with Lockheed Martin who make the Herc.

The C-27 has the same engines, similar props (smaller diameter) and almost exactly the same cockpit as the C130J model Herc.

Its more then twice the size of a Caribou however.... but there isnt anything out there that will fly in and out of a 150m strip!

Are they getting the ones the US didn't want or new ones from Italy?

It's all about logistics which is why Richmond is the best solution for the time being. I am sure once the wrinkles are ironed out 35SQN will move back up North.

“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.
