If all you do is bitumen running or some regular dirt roads like 40-50 kph it will be more than fine.
If you want to go a little more extreme with off roading, it needs better tyres and some tweaks
to vehicle electronics to improve traction control when wheels start spinning/ off the ground.

They are not 4WD they are AWD. Big difference in the offroad world.

Shark is no competition to ANY Ranger off road or towing.

Like most cars (vehicles) it doesn't have to be better or compete on every level. It just has to perform at a level the buyer is happy with.

If it's $20k less and performs even only 70% as good it will still sell.

Yes, Ranger is the benchmark and rightly so but there is still a reasonable number of buyers that don't care for that extra 10% of performance or niche abilities.

Is a small sample size and means very little but in the last couple of weeks I've seen plenty of BYD utes on the road here in southern Adelaide.

Yeah, but it was touted as a Ranger killer so you can’t blame people for drawing comparisons or pointing out its downsides compared to the Ranger.

A Power War has begun and even the car companies seem unaware at this early stage.
We are used to the War of who has the best V8 and power ect but things have changed.
Ford fired the 1st shot with the 1st Gen Raptor, which engine wise was yeah.nah.
2nd Shot fired is Raptor Gen 2 with V6 Petrol. Heaps better.
Shark comes a long with a 1.5 Petrol Hybrid. Totally different concept. Just comparing perceived Power in combining electric and petrol outputs.
BYD are already talking about a 2.0 Petrol Hybrid and now there are others on the side lines with plans to enter.
See where this is heading. 400kw+, 500kw+, 600kw+ and that is without even looking at the Nm figures.

Going to be a super exciting power war with separate chassis, live axles for some, 2000+kg weights, and drum brake rears....

(Kudos to Ford for the Watts link, my '94 ED XR8 has that)

It has to be a Ranger (phev) killer on spec as proposed, which will be its true competitor

Probably 80% of ute buyers don't care if it's not class leading in the mud, I tow trailers (not heavy) around my farm in NZ with a 2wd ute with no problems if your sensible about it

I saw a Shark today, sat in it, neighbor, I thought it was terrible. He’s also not wrapped. But you get what you pay for.

Thought the same, you wonder what possesses people to write that rubbish about a ute?.... Recently watched Mufasa the new lion king movie, in it he was orphaned looking for his family

This review would make more sense if it was a review of Mufasa..... 😵*💫

I think they are coming from the satire angle, a bit like the Betoota Advocate doing those funny AU Falcon elegies.

Guy 2 doors down has one. I took it for a drive yesterday, had a good sit in/poke around. For just over $60k quality is... OK without being great but has all the fancy screens/etc. Hauls *** though for a big ute. Similarly priced new Triton GSR feels way better built and more premium inside. Our Everest kill's it.

I can sort of understand why they went with that exterior design, to make it stand out in a crowded market segment, but WHY make it look ugly? I have to say, I'm over car companies making cars ugly to get noticed, looking at you BMW, Hyundai and Kia.

Saw a 2 door 67 Impala pillarless coupe recently up close. The beauty of the curves on the thing was phenomenal. Maybe it takes humans doing a clay model to get beauty? Hands on touch rather than CAD?

More pop quiz: what is the best looking dual cab? Ranger I'd say.

It will be really interesting to see how the Tasman goes sales wise. It got panned when it was revealed and now reading in the Tasman groups on social media, it is getting panned again on pricing. Will Kia be able to break into the market with 'interesting' looks, ho hum motor and premium pricing? Especially with the onslaught of Chinese offerings hitting the market at the same time. I predict some heavy discounting in about 6 months after release.

Same happened with the Stinger.

Any dual cab? I'd say the F-150.

Of the Thai Specials, I'd say the only ones that can carry off the price premium and move beyond its commercial vehicle origins would be the Ranger and Amarok. Take a look at the higher spec Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Hilux offerings, they all look like base model tarted up with chrome and big wheels. Whereas the Ford/VW start from the top and work their way down to a base spec.
