Whats shut down work like in the mines and what does i entail? Does it pay alright. Reason im asking is i'm having trouble getting into a couple of mines close to me (north parkes mine and cadia in orange) but have been told there is shut down work available. Would taking this on give me a foot in the door at all?
I'm driving trucks interstate atm and would like to be home more often a we have a 4th child on the way and working in either of them 2 mines means id get home everyday. A mate said id get work in qld doing what he does and hes 7 on 7 off but has to pay for his flight from syd every week. It would take me 3hrs to get to the airport and then fly out and the cost would end up to much so i never bothered. I do have hc, and operator tickets with experience but not on a mine site and with my small target area is greatly difficult.

Do you have those days when you just don't know what to wear to work? Well you needn't worry anymore. Just have a few drinks in the wet mess and fall into bed in what you've got on... wake up the next day and just go as you are- no problem about looking fancy and clean ! If you like working 24hrs a day, it's not a problem, because that's what the wet mess is for- going over( and over and over) the days events tonne for tonne. If If you have a wife or a girlfriend, don't worry, because you won't have her for long once she see's what you have become. If you have hobbies, we can easily get rid of them- the only one you'll need is a drinking hobby. If you have manners, well they'll have to go, and the only vocabulary you will need consists ofthe following:- .That's a carton .Brown nose .My Aircon's not working .Where's my pay .It wasn't me Well that's just a brief description of life in the mines ... cheers..x.. |

So what do you guys do on your time off, say living on site? After work do you just go back to your room and socialise with room mates or hit the town etc?
Where do you keep your car(s)? Would you rather do FIFO, live on site or rent? |

No town within 40k's of here to walk too... I have decorated my room with plenty of porn so it feels like home finally. My ride stays locked up for 5 weeks at a time and then gets batlapped for 6 hrs every night i fly in with the missus with acca dakka blaring I would prefer to stay in town (Moranbah)and support the locals but unfortunately that isn't going to happen... |

Try being a chef for the poor overpaid mine workers. Dont know what their home life is like but sure must be good if they whinge about 6-8 different food choices plus salads, and 2 different desserts every night.
Not to mention room cleaned on a regular basis, sheets changed twice a week and clean towels twice a week. Truck drivers seem to be the worst though, but most have got no teeth so I enjoy putting out corn on the cob just to hear them whinge that little bit more. Cant really complain at the moment though Im on a new camp with only 6 people in so getting paid for 12 hours and working 3. Plenty of kitchen work available in minesites(our company set to need 20-30 in the coming months for upcoming projects). Pay not quite as high as a dumpy driver or haul driver but get to work in air conditioned kitchens away from the dust, heat and flies. |

The kitchen staff at our camp seem to have a high turnover rate.
They work 2 weeks on 1 week off. Hours are all over the place from what ive seen. As in brekky has to be out by 3:30am.

Sounds alright to me if you get fed, someone changes your sheets, room gets cleaned. You mention 6-8 choices of food, do you have a choice in what you get to eat or is it we're having this tonight and what ever the chef decides on is what you get and its something different every night? Or can you eat the same thing all the time if you find something you like? |

love this thread , it's very educational .
being in a mechanical field , and knowing quite a few tradesmen who have been around , i have to laugh at the stories , i hear . i think i mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread , that big $$$$$ arent thrown at anybody . money is pretty much always appropriate to the work . mining isnt a blessing to you , it's a high paying job if you are seeking a high paying job . shiftwork, danger, hazardous ,underground , hot . etc etc . people expecting big money entering the game have got it wrong . big money for big reasons . many i hear cannot hack it and the turnover is very high , it challenges a lot of people , both in stamina and fitness , and skill level. the facts are ordinary people will not cut it in this field , and thats not puutting the job down . ordinary people wont cut it in a hospital either , or a morgue , or a police officer etc etc etc . |

One thing to consider when chucking everything to go to the mines. Make sure you do not get in over your head.
The mines pay well because China are buying our minerals. If they have an economic hiccup the mines will go into hibernation in about 30 seconds resulting in a huge number of people being made redundant and flooding back to the "real world" looking for work. The employers who have been hard hit because all the tradies and labourers have run off may not be all that interested in giving you a job or at least putting you on contract. If you have been earning $2,000 per week and have $1,500 going out to pay for your "toys" you may find yourself a toyless bankrupt in a very short period of time. Make hay while the sun shines but be sure you also store a bit up for winter...... |

Thats a good point flappy, but look at australia and there is not much else going.
Over extending your budget can happen with anyone in any industry though. For those in the game, do other resources get bonuses like in coal?

pork chops, beef stir fry, vegetarian option, potata dish, pasta dish and 3 different veg plus a hot dessert and cold dessert. Generally we serve more beef and pork then lamb due to costs. Every wednesday for example is rump steak night, friday fish and seafood, saturday BBQ and sunday roast. We also have the option of steak or fish as well every night if you wish. We also have suggesion sheets out so any special requests will be looked at, all depending on cost of course. I have just applied for a position with another company that is looking for chefs and they are paying $48 an hour with 11 hour shifts. Only downside is the roster is 4 weeks on 1 off. I have it good now only doing 2 on 1 off and have the option to stay in camp on my week off so I have no living expenses at all. |
