Hmm, the union jack is our heritage. It was made up of 3 previous flags from 3 separate countries.

But to some on here, heritage in not important. So go out and petition FPV to make a front wheel drive turbo diesel hatch and call it GTHO, play the AFL grand final in Alice Springs, move Australia day to September 11, move ANZAC day to "the last monday of April" so it is always a long weekend, and from now on only write in mandarin instead of English.

Sleekism, you seem to hate our heritage and Great Britain but remember that the Magna Carta and Westminster Law are the reasons why you have not been locked up in a hole in the ground for daring to speak against the government and party politic AND we are writing this in English, not French (who arrived here the same time at Phillip but were driven off) like the pacific islands and quebec or Dutch like the "east indies" and southern africa or Spanish like central and south america or Portugese like brazil and macau or german like north west africa.

History is history. There have been many countries that have ignored their past and created a new independent state and society. North Korea, USSR, Nazi Germany and Myanmar are some fairly recent examples.

My bad. I knew something wasn't quite right. Thanks for picking that up.

It's not our flag.

Whos flag is it then? You are who you are and nothing can change that. Live with it and enjoy it.

Your right heritage is important. But regardless of what is on our flag we will still be a Commonwealth country. Even if we were eventually to become a republic, we still would be a Commonwealth country.

We don't need the U/J on our flag to remember our heritage.

Um, I don't think so. The whole pro republic mob have been pushing the "Cutting ties with Britain and the Commonwealth" barrow for over a decade; they do not want to be a part of it anymore but would prefer to be independant, just like the USA. I'm betting that half the support base for a republic would evaporate when you let everyone know that we would not be able to represent Australia at the commonwealth games.

As for the flag, we only have radicals and lets not forget the ultra weird Politically Correct brigade which would ensure that a new flag is a concoction of stupid ideals to appease vocal minorities. Let's just say that any new flag would be far worse than whatever anyone currently in government, committee or republican movement can come up with. We also have plenty of heritage and have proven ourselves to be quite a strong country both economically and diplomatically.

I agree with an earlier post though, we do need to have a little more patriotism here not to the flag, but to our country; its history and its values. Seems more and more that we are being made to feel guilty that we are invaders and that our history is allegedly marred with genocide (before flaming look the word up), so much so that alot of people in high places are almost embarrassed by our history. For shame.

My understanding of us becoming a republic, is that yes we would cut ties with Britain, but we woud stay a commonwealth country. In the same vain as the likes of Canada, but not to the levels of the US.

I tend to agree with your point on choosing a new flag though.

I also agree we need some more patriotism in this country.
