It’s something I disliked about the pre facelift I30N. Black plastic side skirts, it’s too much.

While I don't hate the styling, I certainly don't love it either.
Subaru have never really been renowned for styling prowess. (Gen 4 Liberty accepted.) The front end is it's best angle. To me, there is just a lack of cohesion overall and the squared off black plastic guards look awful and really make the wheels like tiny. Mass body roll and plough under-steer look to be standard as usual with the WRX.

It seems to have a very high hip line, I don't mind its looks with the plastic everywhere in orange or white.
Its like they were trying to go for the Chevrolet Silverado look - where they always have the square wheel arches. It looks a bit conservative though, which I feel isn't the right theme for the WRX. Is it just me or does it have a very high ride height? Or maybe its the angle of the photos. |

If somebody thought they were impractical they wouldn't buy a hatchback would they? Most people don't need to fit 3 suitcases in the boot and carry 4 passengers though.. also never seen a girl driving an A45, ST, i30N, Megane RS etc. See them more driving around more shiny dual cabs these days which makes sense. Much more practical to drop kids off at school and put two bags of shopping in.

The fact you can get a hatchback with awesome performance should be celebrated. Makes trips to ikea a bit more fun

I'm always curious about WRX/STi's whenever they come out and then seeing them on the road.
I don't think many would agree at the unveil you like it straight away - its a Subaru DNA us consumers always find so subjective barring the fanatics. Getting past that they are not as they once were in overall performance, I don't recall one that you warm up to from the get go but as time goes by and seeing them on the road I tend to keep looking and think yer thats quirky as always but its ok. I came close getting the previous model earlier last year, I end up liking them for what they are. I'm not fussed about the metrics its not as fast as such and such for I'm not racing on a track its all about the experience that ticks your box's if owned one. The AWD always pulls me in but thats my take on the car compared to others. It could work for me as a daily period IF I really wanted one. Colour code some of the plastics or a dark colour on the road would look better.

Its not often the newer model looks worse than the preceding, but here we are.
Guessing the STi is going to be a bit like the Civic Type R...but its not enough for me and Subaru do themselves no favors but making interesting concept version and then releasing that. I like the current gen Sti though.

WRX is yesterdays hero. And has been for a long time.
The styling just get's blander and worse with every model. In the time it's competitors have dramatically increased performance, it's basically gone nowhere. I have no idea what Subaru are trying to achieve. They even stopped putting gold wheels on them because they wanted to move away from that look, the look nearly everybody loved. Strange company. It seems like when it became popular, they then spent years trying to make people no longer like it. |

Yeah it seems like the WRX in the mid 90s was the silent killer. It performed stunningly well in a world of pure mediocrity. Everything else evolved, and Subaru didn’t do enough to keep the weight down and power output high. Now, if the regular WRX was a low 4 second car, and the STI was a mid 3s, then they would be on to something.

Not sold on the black plastic wheel guards.
Just imagine what they will look like once they start to fade and weather. This is a photo of the faded guards on a 2018 Subaru VX ... Just 3 years old. |

Looks like their whole range is going with the black plastic non painted guards, outback , XV forester etc
suits some vehicles the popular Rav 4 has squared off ones Mercedes even have it on their top end AMG SUVs which I thought odd

The T3-like rear wing and the old-school laggy 2.5 boxer has it's appeal.

The second-gen WRX is probably my favorite, even the bug eye, with the blob eye being my favorite of all WRX's.
The Blandest WRX would go to the early third-gen's. Subaru ended up doing a pretty hefty styling overhaul to remedy that (note the massively flared guards).

There were a few exceptions, but I would say (and I’m sure most would agree) they styling and performance of most 90s cars were a little dull. That being said I just picked up a 97 Thunderbird. I can still enjoy it.
