True - but if you're going to take the time to put your thoughts down on a text only medium and you want them read and understood, probably a good idea to take some time to make them easy to read.

Someone saying aks doesn't slow me down in a verbal conversation but if I have to sit an unscramble a bunch of sort-of words on a screen, I'll most likely just move on to the next post. Probably a fault of my own but I wouldn't give someone's opinion much credence if I had to whip out the code wheel to decipher it.

The apostrophe is also misused regularly, even by signwriters.

At work we had a new sign put up at the main entrance "..... Austalia's Forth Uranium Mine". At least they got the apostrophe in the right spot.

Don't get me started on the misuse of 'demerit'. Lost count of how many times I have heard people say "Yeah, I lost 3 demerit points when I got caught speeding". Even journalists get this wrong on TV and print media.

Speaking of media misuse of words - 'decimate' literally means to reduce by one tenth. From Latin (Roman) times, a commander would be asked to 'decimate the ranks' meaning to reduce them from ten to nine as a proportion.

It does not mean 'totally destroy beyond recognition'.

Funny how people say they can't spell or punctuate because they left school at year nine. That stuff is taught at primary school and should be pretty advanced by the time you get to year 9.

It's hardly a secret. If you read, then you will know what the words are. Read, read, read. It doesn't matter what you read, as long as it's not the Herald Sun or The Picture.

Perhaps the meaning has changed over the years..?

The definition at Dictionary.com pretty much describes my understanding of the word;

dec·i·mate/ˈdesəˌmāt/
Verb:

Kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage of.

Drastically reduce the strength or effectiveness of (something): "plant viruses that can decimate yields".

Perhaps it has. It's an evolving language. I'll use it in its pure form.

Both of you are correct.

It should strictly mean reduction of one in ten but in modern usage it has come to mean total annihilation.

I tend to prefer it's original use as "Deci" means ten.

I am tempted to say that poor grammar is a way of showing the world how stupid you are. But that would be a bit harsh, so I thought I would let those who choose to display their lack of english skills in permanent ink.

Ummm, no it will not. At least, not any time soon.

I guess that it why it is important.

On another forum I visit there is a section where the top post has dyslexia.
Some of you guys on here would flip out if you had to read a post made by him.

Everyone tries to understand him and ignore the constant errors and random capital letters half way through a woRd.

My post was a bit harsh, but was too late to edit it. I shouldn't drink then post
Apologies to those I offended.

Good on you for earning a reasonable wage after coming from a disadvantaged background. Tips me hat to yous!
I came from an affective disordered mum and an alcoholic father. Sometimes we can do well despite our history.

I think that language does change, but it is primarily there for communication. If the message gets distorted (using the tattoos as reference), then it is failing. Much the same as when you read an entire paragraph that is a single sentence. It can make your eyes hurt trying to make any sense of it. If you don't care, then you are either disprespecting the target audience, or your opinion/communication has no purpose apart from your own. Either way, I don't wish to be subjected to it, and will usually switch off.
The other problem that I see is that if you lack comprehensive language skills you lose so much that the language has to offer. Shakespear had wonderful ways of playing with the language that you will miss it if you only have a rudimentary grasp.

I stopped caring how people pronounce words after hearing news readers and advertisements on TV and Radio in Perth call the suburb Osborne Park - Osmond Park. It happens nearly everytime.
I also heard an interview, about a year back, that nearly all newspapers are written using the literacy level of a 12 year old............

I recently got a tattoo on my chest and went over the spelling about 10 times just to make sure I had it right.
My tattooist nearly ballsed it up with the design, lucky I was watching him draw it up and noted the mistake: "slip inside the eye of you're mind" which was quickly changed to "slip inside the eye of your mind". Close call!

My pet hate - should of, would of, could of. For those that don't see anything wrong with this, it's should've, would've, could've, short for should have, would have and could have. I see people of all education levels use of instead of have in this context - it's a product of phonetic spelling rather than proper word use (back in my day.......) and a distinct lack of reading, though I did see it in a novel once too!

A few that seem to pop up on my facebook all the time: His - instead of "he's" and: Defiantly - instead of "definitely".

It also bothers me when people say 'verse' as in, Bombers are versing the Tigers tonight. It astonishes me as to how many people don't realise that 'versing' isn't a word.

Its good to see whatever our up bringing theres many who can be bothered getting off their backside and doing there bit to better themselves
Id safely say theres many who arent over educated that are earning the big coin , or have worked hard to get to their position in life, than those who school their whole life and expect that elusive job placed in their lap
Congrats on not being like most under educated or under privelidged people who sit around parading to the world that they are owed something
Most of those less educated ive come across over many fields arent afraid to get their hands dirty and get in and get the joob done
The thing i hate about those over educated people out there (Not all) is they are fair dinkun lazy, and they lack the ability to look outside the square

The neighbours maybe future son in law is early 30s , been in tafes/college most of his life and cant be bothered to split some wood for his in laws who are mid 60s, but he doesnt mind living it up in their huge well equipped house
