Don't go NEAR Vista for atleast a year. Please people, listen to me when I say this.

Driver support is virtually non-existent for this operating system. Stick with XP pro for as long as physically possible.

graphics driver support is a big issue at the moment, when i tested games they ran considerably slower on vista. also basic things, like trying to install a wireless NIC, were painful.

You can download a pc check program from Microsoft that will scan your pc and tell you what version of VISTA you can use with your pc.
What I posted will give you all the Vista features with XP program. Check out PC USER Jan 07 for pics and info. New alt/delete is cool.

Sorry, but thats bullsiht...MrCrackers is correct about graphics drivers not being up to scratch yet...they arent bad, just not up to XP standard yet...I still game on Vista with no problems...FEAR, GTA SA etc...all run great...3DMark06 only gives a score couple of hundred points less.
Saying driver support is virtually no existant is simply not true...wheres your evidence?

Absolutely correct. I too am running the final release and drivers are abundant. The drivers are pretty damn good too. However, if your computer was assembled by russians or something else equally absurd than there may not be drivers for yours yet. As far as mainstream, portable and corporate goes, everything from XP appears to have made it through intact.

I'm still using RC1 and couldnt recommend Vista based on my findings yet.

- Office XP displays miscellaneous 'glitches' during normal usage.
- Creative sound drivers are not available in an acceptable state. Not MS fault, but still doesnt help the consumer.
- Most video card manufacturers have jerry-rigged some drivers to help testers get somewhere. They're a bit clunky, and it shows. Brute force hardware powaaah is currently the way if you're a gamer at the moment.
- Internet Explorer whilst now feature-competitive is still not in the same league as FireFox. FF feels so much nicer still and it's tabbing system hasnt been bettered. IE7 also crashes frequently when I'm viewing fordforums for example. Shock horror!
- As a gamer, I can tell you there is STACKS of games (many recent) that wont work properly. Perhaps addressed in RC2 or later, but still not encouraging. UT2004, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter for just a few examples.
- Vista still displays alarmingly similar traits of XP-Me-98-95.... ie frozen taskmenu icons (wont disappear until mouseover when programs exit). Sometimes network stuff just mysteriously 'stops working' which I'm sure everyone is all too familiar with.

Vista looks nice, for me, that's about it. I'd have gone back to XP if my new computer would install it properly (I think I'm having dramas regarding maximum HD sizes. I'll see if MS will send me a new XP CD with SP2 included).

Do you have Wine set up on that properly?

The only reason I haven't converted to Linux, completely, is because of Windows apps that do not have native Linux versions. I've not had much success in the past installing Windows apps using Wine.

Well, I tried to download RC2 but that went missing from the website, so I dont know how I can get anything more up to date. I was never sent an email asking me to try the final production version.

But what you say is almost certainly true, even MS is bound to have fixed something between versions.

Default **Update**

Now running full final Vista Ultimate.... Nice.... All hardware in my system is supported and running fine, except my Audigy 2ZS. It's working fine but only stereo. Full 5.1 features will be supported with Creative's release of WHQL drivers, hopefully in January. But I'm stoked, system rating is 4.2 held back by my CPU. It's only a 32 bit P4 3.0ghz with Hyper Threading. Graphics is rating 4.8 and Hard Disc rates 5.8.

Love it!!

Here's a screenshot

1440 x 900 on my LG was only available running the standard lead from the graphics card, not the DVI connector. In other words in Analogue mode. What lead are you running? DVI (white plug) or Analogue (blue plug)?

In post 75 I mentioned that I only had stereo on my Audigy 2 ZS, well it appears I was running an earlier beta driver from Creative. Latest now installed and options are up to 7.1 now. Even sweeter....:hihi:

Try a dual boot with http://www.mepis.org/

Yeah I'm running it also.
Unfortunately the drivers for SLI aren't out yet =(
Bit of a bummer.
Seems to run pretty much perfect though.
Running Final Release of Ultimate =)

I don't see why people would say they'd wait.
Maybe to January when all the drivers out, but
waiting till SP2 is just silly.

Ok,
Vistas beginning to annoy me,
It's not the fact of bugs, it's just driver
imcompatability. Practically all of the drivers
are only in beta stages, and are missing heaps.
Like my SLI, isn't supported yet in Vista, and other
little sound problems, such as no support for 5.1.
Should have waited till january

yeah haha this is just like XP64. Useless. They say that Vista is alot more secure, but really, you can make XP just as secure if not more secure, and apart from that, Vista just has alot of real ****y stuff thrown in like the task switcher, which can be downloaded for XP anyway. as for the transformation pack, i've got it on all my machines i think its bloody great! as long as you have a video card thats half decent it works great!

I've been involved with Vista since the very early internal alpha stages.
There is a lot under the hood that applications like this simply won't give you. If you want Vista then get the real thing. I'll agree with posts to wait until more Vista drivers are out there. I have RTM here but even though I've tested it from start to finish I'm in no rush to install it. Even when I do it will be as a dual boot for quite a while.

Yeah,
I suggest wait till it officially gets released,
Late jan? Hopefully all the drivers will be out then.
From my using it the last few weeks, it looks like a nice
step up from XP
