1TUFFUTE, I've seen you convey that sentiment in a couple different threads now, and after seeing that article above, I'm inclined to agree with you. It beggers belief that the Captiva and Barina can sell so many cars when they're probably the worst 2 cars in their respective segments. Likewise Colorado is probably amongst the worst utes in the category.
Cruze is commendable to a point. I've read a lot of reviews lately on Cruze, hatch and sedan, and they mostly come back with the verdict of, "It's okay." They all say the diesel is laggy and unrefined, but the 1.4 turbo petrol is refined, but lacking in power. Looking at the Cruze segment though, it's really only Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla to compete with. Mitsubishi hasn't updated the Lancer since 2008, and doesn't look like they're going to until the new Lancer comes next year. Sorry, I know this is off topic, but I think the topic at hand has been covered with the fact that January is a slow month and we all knew Falcon sales would be bad this month with the combination of hail damaged cars and FG2 coming. |

As for the months sales. January is never a good month for the local heroes. We also know that substantial amounts of Falcon stock were damaged by hail. A few weeks back. My local dealer had barely any Falcons in fact I think they were all FPVs. FG2 Falcon and SZ Territory are produced pretty much 1 for 1 now. The Broadmeadows plant is running a full month with no down days, the engine plant is building plenty of EcoLPi engines too. February will likely see 4,000 sales between the locally produced Fords.

At the same time, Falcon and Mondeo sales have nosedived since Ford reverted to word of mouth... Mind you, the only way Holden can get sales is by offering huge discounts on 2012 SV6 - $36,990 drive away. Even at that, they only scored around 2,000 odd last month.. |

If i was a Holden buyer, I'd be getting the 2012 plate SV6 for $36,990 drive away, better resale value. I have not seen a Falcon ad lately, have you? Some Vic dealers will be selling repaired (hail damaged) FGIIs for $32,990 drive away... I wonder if Ford claims losses on insurances or just writes them of at slightly better than fleet prices... I think your notion of Ford selling Falcons for full RRP is nothing more than a myth. |

I'm not convinced of widespread discounting of all stock to $36,990 drive away.. not at the moment anyway.. Check the fine print and I think you'll find that its limited numbers... and there were no such offers for 2012 Falcon in January |

while cruze is $1,000 cheaper.. id say the cruze has a tight margin where the commo has room to move. http://www.holden.com.au/latestoffers

Ford, I'm not so sure of as it may not be the price that's a problem, just getting people to buy that aren't fleet custoners... we'll see. That tight margin on Cruze is what's causing Holden all kinds of grief, if they increase price, sales will drop but not necessarily increasing Commodore sales.... 100% correct - just like video recorders, CRT televisions and fax machines, big rwd cars are headed for death. That is why Ford are advertising the Focus - people want to buy a car in that sector ....not many want to buy a Falcon. |

Could just be that Carsales (Redbook, same thing) and Carsguide are not updated frequently enough.

As Holden's comprehensive discounting, not at the moment but will Ford be forced to follow them? The rules may be changing for Falcon and Commodore if sales and justification of local production is at stake... All eyes are on both of them to prove that investing in next gen big cars is warranted.. |

Fair point too. If heavy discounting is needed to move either Falcon or Commodore, it's going to be hard to justify the proposal of more money from the government to build cars that no one is buying anymore.
Kinda lends more credence to the argument that the respective manufacturers need to concentrate more on building cars in Australia, that Australians want to buy if they want to keep Australians in jobs. |

I'm still not convicted anyone is buying a std XR6 for anything more than 37K or maybe 38K. This is the stand price for an std XR6. Has been for years now!!

It's more likely that Holden has quite a lot of stock to shift and let's face it, that price is still way better than fleet deals.. Burnz, I'm not saying that Ford won't follow them but until we see specials on 2012 XR6 stock on the FoA website, it's safe to assume this is dealers shifting limited XR6s with Ford's approval The real deals will be when the $5,000 lux pack is thrown in for free and $36,990 drive away... |

It's going to be hard for both sides of the camp to turn around and ask customers to cough up $43k + onroads for an SV6/XR6 after they've been running them out at $36k and less for the last 6 months or so.

I think that idea is now out the window and both need a global platform of sorts to control costs. The ideal cars to build in Austraila would be Midsized Car- Large car- Mid Sized SUV all on closely related platforms. That way, both manufacturers get a cut of markets with good pricing and reasonable sales.. |

I don't have any allegiance to either brand, but I really feel Holden with the Commodore will struggle more than Ford with the Falcon this year due to Falcon's EB4 and EcoLPI . Commodore doesn't seem to be bringing any new tech to the table? I just hope both sides sort it out before Australian jobs are lost to Asian countries. |

fuel costs could spell real problems for them, both manufacturers need a little luck to fall their way.. SS Series II Commodore, 2012 plate...$42,990 drive away, 2011 plate is $41,990 drive away. Series II International with leather trim, $34,990 drive away |

If I had a family, I would look at a Territory before I get a Falcon.
The large sedan is no longer the choice of vehicle for a family. That is why I simply do not think manufacturing in Australia is sustainable. Despite Ford having a great product in the Falcon, private buyers simply do not see it that way - for some reason they prefer to flock to the Cruze - despite it being inferior to many other offerings out there... The fact that the Mazda 3 was the best selling car last year shows that the market has moved a long way from a decade ago. Holden also cannot rely on the Cruze solely to justify manufacturing here. For now, Thailand seems to be where the future lies...
