You'll probably have to go to the supermarket and buy a tin of mushy peas then take a pie home from a bakery and construct it yourself.

Victorians really are doing it tough when it comes to the pie floater.

Holbrook's the only place I know of which gives you 3 halves for a sandwich.

From my young and virile days, I must admit to consuming the occasional floater from the iconic Adelaide Pie Cart on North Terrace which was normally on a Friday or Saturday night waaaaaay past midnight after ingesting copious quantities of questionable beverages.

My favourite choice was a chicken pie floater with sauce and vinegar. The tricky part when eating was trying not to step in one of the ejected floaters sprawled across the footpath which in winter, were still hot and steamy. The tricky part after eating was not to eject the floater.

Had my first one at that bakery at O'Connell street in North Adelaide.

It needs more vinegar to suit wog tastes but it's not bad - wog pie floater, 75% more vinegar and use broadbeans with balsamic vinegar and olive oil

Now this is a case of the double negative. Where 2 negatives equal a positive. Theres a bakery in chatswood i frequent that do the best ham and cheese croissants. On paper they are a crappy croissant, crappy ham and the cheese is kraft singles. But slapped together and microwaved. Theyre brilliant.

Problem with so many croissant these days is they are bready tasting and not flaky pastries.
Bad habit I discovered is buying a sausage roll and placing it inside a fresh crispy croissant.

Chiltern bakery this morn, nice flaky sausage rolls, still not convinced about the pies, apple turnovers are great.

I can relate.

One of my favourites is making a sausage roll sandwich with cheese and sauce. The sausage roll must be good quality with meat that's firm, not like the consistency of saw dust, bread must be fresh/squishy and coated with lots of butter.

Everybody knows the humble cheese and bacon roll. The bready thing with bacon bits and cheese on top. Way back when, when my brother was working in roKWiz's selected bakery in carlingford, he was allowed on occasion to bake his own to bring home. Its probably a thing somewhere, but im yet to see it anywhere. Basic concept. The cheese and bacon loaf. So a loaf of white bread infused with cheese and bacon bits. So, not on top, but in the bread. Best when it was still warm from the oven, but even next day or whatever, a slice of that chucked in the microwave for a few seconds was still pretty good.

Todays review:
This place is a stand out favourite of mine and many others - the most obvious measure that this is a great bakery is that its always really busy. We had to wait in line starting from outside the shop and once inside, it was very clear that the customers cared more about their hunger than social distancing. Staff were very friendly and efficient but totally run off their feet.

When we eventually reached the counter, I ordered a chunky pepper steak and sweet potato pie plus a large sausage roll (Available in 2 sizes). Both of these exceeded my expectations in flavour and size. In fact, I ate the sausage roll before even thinking about taking a photo. Also ordered by other members of our group were butter chicken pie, chunky steak and mushroom pie and two more sausage rolls, all of which were greatly received and disappeared leaving only a few crumbs.

Dessert consisted of two vanilla slices, a chocolate custard donut and a standard chocolate donut plus a huge cookie for take away. I had one of the vanilla slices which were so deep that to take a proper bite, it would have been necessary to dislocate ones jaw so it was a case of just nibble and hope for the best. The flavour was as amazing as the quantity of perfect custard which was sandwiched between two flakey pastry layers cooked to perfection and coated with chocolate sprinkled fondant icing. other cakes did not disappoint the group.

On the way out, I purchased a 2Kg, 16 Inch long pasty slice and 4 chunky steak pies to put in the freezer for ron.

Overall rating: 9/10

Whoa now you're going back a looong time, when the Casino was still a railway station.

From memory it was in the middle of the square on the post office side.

yup. there were 2 of them, owned by same people I dont know.
North Terrace Railway station
Vic square in front of post office.
I arrived in Adel from NZ january '77, friends suggested we head into town for sumpin to eat. we all piled out at the post office and I tried eating one of those things. almost flew back to NZ on my own the eruptions it created in my either regions, seriously thought I was going to die

18 months late I meet the future bride, was invited back to her place for dinner ( was going to say something to eat....did that too )
she produced these home made curry pies soaking in pea green soup.
I kid you not almost walked out then but was persuaded to try them.

They are now still part of our anniversary routine after 32 years.

I'm going to take a bit of my own advice tomorrow and create a home made floater. It might even come with a small side of chips too
