These comparisons are always rubbish.

Add the performance Pack content plus other standard features to the AU version, add 10% GST and the Australian spec Mustang is on par with the US version.

Go back through the old threads and see we get a VERY good deal here.

There will be people in the market who only want to drive a V8 GM product. The Camaro fits the slot.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro to be automatic-only in Australia
Quote:
Only two pedals for Aussie Camaros as local specification firms.

Fans of Chevrolet’s Camaro will only have one transmission choice and potentially less power than its US siblings when it is sold locally.

A HSV spokesperson confirmed to Wheels no manual transmission will be available when the company begins selling converted Camaros later this year, despite HSV management saying at the time of the Camaro announcement that a manual gearbox option would also be offered.

The sole gearbox will be an eight-speed automatic. Australian-spec Camaros may also cop a minor drop in power compared to what is available in North America once the LT1 engine is complied to ADR requirements.

HSV will convert Camaros in its Clayton factory, with just a sole spec grade – 2SS – expected to be offered. Rumours persist of the flagship ZL1 variant being offered locally in the future following a trademark application earlier this year.

Powered by a 6.2-litre LT1 V8, the Australian-spec Camaros will produce "over" 330kW and 600Nm according to HSV’s website. The final outputs are yet to be confirmed, with "official certification pending". Camaros sold in the US produce 340kW and 615Nm.

The Camaro will roll on 20-inch, five-spoke machined-face alloys, wrapped in 245/40ZR20 Goodyear Eagle rubber at the front and 275/35ZR20s out back. Stopping duties will be taken care of by four-piston Brembo brakes front and rear, with fixed calipers.

A bi-modal exhaust system will be finished with dual-outlet tips, while the rear of the Camaro will also feature a stanchion spoiler.

Inside the cabin the 2SS will feature power-adjustable heated and ventilated leather-trimmed bucket seats, a leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel, nine-speaker Bose premium audio system, and dual-zone climate control.SV spokesperson declined to shed further light to the Camaro’s local pricing, however Wheels understands it’s likely to carry a $30,000 premium over the rival Ford Mustang V8, putting it in the region of $90,000.

I see the HSV Colorado ad's are well and truly out and about right now . I suppose the Camaro ones will be coming fairly soon now , given that it's supposed to go on sale early in the new financial year , about mid July last time I read about it . IF I was a GM fan and if I wanted one bad I suppose spending 90K would be okay and being HSV built they'd do a quality job .

Surmising that this'll be a 'dip the toe in the water' experiment from the General before a real commit to limited RHD world markets will go ahead . The nominal figure is 1000 apparently to sell initially in OZ.

Don't take this seriously because it's really just a 'pie in the sky ' stuff but wouldn't it be great if GM through HSV and Ford via Tickford etc were given licence to build RHD versions of the higher spec and optioned Camaro's and Mustangs for small markets within and outside of Australia for target markets in the Souhern Hemisphere/Pacific region ?.

Not outright manufacturing by any means but a bit like when NZ used to assemble Falcons at least in the 1970's. These were stock XA's I think.
I found this some time ago .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VUrNWRY7dw&t=13s . I wonder did Holden ever do this too .

Sounds like you are referring to CKD car.

Although it's more a semi-knocked-down kit in this case.

Could have a rolling body shell with no engine installed and dashboard.

I say $80k drive away would be a nice car. No different to a clubbie.

Isnt the 2018 spec mustang going to fit in at just over $70k? I thought the proce was going up.
Thats what i've been thinking too, why would HSV want to be left with a bunch of LHD Camaro stuff which would be useless to them.
I'd say GM will provide them with a car that just needs the RHD parts fitted at a discounted price and once finished will be competitively priced with the new Stang for what will be a much more exclusive vehicle.
If HSV buyers were happy to lay down 80k on a Commodore they'll not blink an eye at that for a Camaro.
Question is, how many of those swinging buyers who bought Mustang because there was no alternative will now swing back the other way.

Best measure is the 2002 Tickford Mustang.

It cost 89,000 back then.

It had alot of factory support, an Australian ADR windscreen was installed in the US production line, along with JDM spec lights. It was more than moving the steering wheel over, floor sections had to be removed and new sections fitted, new engine mounts etc

Its not hard to see how the Camaro can get its price.

Yep, the starting official price as per HSV is $90k but depending on exchange rates at the time this could easily be more and also if there are additional options as the base unit is $90k.

https://www.caradvice.com.au/614507/...cing-revealed/

PS: I also read elsewhere that they will only be available as Auto's

$90,000 dollars sounds a bit on the low side. On the Chev website the price for a 2SS auto is $39,450 US. Transport to Australia for RORO is around $7000(guestimate), so the price landed in Australia is approx $46,450US. Current exchange rate is around 75 cents, so 72.5 cents is what you get, so that makes the car $64,000 Aus . Add the amount for the wharf and importer handling fees of around $1000, now we are at $65,000, add 10% gst, another $6,500. Now the cost just to get the car into Australia is $71,500. A firm in Brisbane who specialise in right hand drive conversions quote a price of $44,000 to do a RHD conversion for a Camaro, so thinking HSV would be doing the conversion for a similar price the cost of will be around $115,500. Add too this registration, stamp duty, and dealer delivery costs and luxury car tax(?) The cost is a fair bit more than $90,000. Maybe the $90,000 was the HSV are going to charge for the vehicle landed in Australia. Then RHD conversion will be on top of that price.

HSV would be paying close to cost on the Camaro, not RRP.

But 90k does seem a little low. But then again they will be over 100k on the road.

HSV can do the conversion cheaper then these little firms. Plus they would have a deal on buying them, shipping them etc.

I remember flogging one of those around when they landed here, sound was amazing and the gearbox felt so agricultural! Those are the 2 points that stuck with me.

If you think they can do it cheaper than companies like this these two https://www.performaxint.com.au/show...evrolet-camaro and http://www.scdamerica.com.au/ your are dreaming. These companies have been doing these types of conversions for a very long time and they will have the process very well streamlined. There other companies in other states that also will compete on quailty and price of the conversions.
They may well be able to get cheaper transport, but not enough to make a significant difference to the price.

HSV are doing this to make money so if there are any savings I am sure they will put it straight into their bank account.

There's one big difference.
If HSV gets the support of GM, they will directly import all the cars, convert them and offer then as brand new RHDs.
They may also also get sweetheart deals from some of GM's suppliers for RHD parts.

Have to agree with you there as the only way I can see the Camaro pricing at below $100,000 is that there is some sort of subsidy (or sweetheart deal)given to the HSV by GM to try to slow down the amount of Mustangs being sold. That could be hard though as I heard that our local Ford dealer took 5 orders for the Bullitt Mustang and 7 orders for the 2018 Mustang after Ford announcing their sale date.

Bottom line, there's around $20,000 to $25,000 in added costs for Camaro buyers to wear
and the '19 Camaro stays with 8AT so they don't match Mustang's 10-speed auto or a 6-speed manual.

No actual numbers on MY19 Mustang orders but it's mechanically different enough to justify
upgrading to the new 10-speed auto, the better close ratio 6-speed manual, MT82-D4 = Tremec TR6060
MagneRide may also become a popular ordered item as it takes suspension to another level.

Would have to prove compliance for our standards and fuel ie re-tested. Noise would have to be re-tested too, as no doubt they would have had to lower the DB's a bit due to our lower noise allowance.

Listening to a 2018 Mustang today and I could hear it accelerating over a kilometre away. The bi-modal exhaust in race mode is freaking LOUD.

Manual Camaro confirmed.

https://www.carsales.com.au/editoria...firmed-112972/

Chevrolet Camaro manual confirmed
But HSV says you’ll have to wait a while…

Fear not, three-pedal fans: Holden Special Vehicles will offer a manual Chevrolet Camaro in Australia after all.

But you are going to have to wait a while for it.

“Absolutely, our intent is to have a manual,” HSV managing director Tim Jackson told motoring.com.au.

“We know we have a customer base that wants a manual, we are working on it and I imagine we will have a manual as we move into late 2019.”

The timing means the manual version of HSV’s locally-converted Camaro 2SS will likely be part of the facelift range unveiled in the USA. The Camaros in this year’s initial Australian allotment are pre-facelift MY18 models.

HSV copped criticism for the auto-only specification of its initial Camaro 2SS coupe, first deliveries of which commence later than expected in August.

Those cars are European specification, which because of a number of equipment fitments made sense to select for the conversion process.

But that spec didn’t have manual available with it, hence the transmission’s initial omission from the line-up.

“The specification of vehicle that made the most sense for us in this initial launch is an auto-only,” confirmed Jackson.

HSV has yet to release pricing for the 2SS – that happens late June or early July – which it is converting to right-hand drive locally at its new Melbourne factory and will be available from selected Chevrolet-badged Holden dealers in Australia and New Zealand.

Jackson said HSV would deliver “around 500” Camaros to dealers in 2018, of which motoring.com.au understands about 25 per cent have been sold so far.

He said some Chevrolet/Holden dealers had already sold their allotment of the Ford Mustang fighter, but stressed the priority was not to over-commit to too much supply in the early stages of the program, which HSV originally said would involve up to 1000 Camaros a year.

“I would rather be conservative in the number and be surprised on the upside than the reverse. This is a long-term program, but you can disappoint yourself from a business perspective if you get ahead of yourself.”

The intricacies of local right-hand conversion had blown out launch timing for the Camaro slightly, Jackson confirmed.

“It’s maybe a month delayed. It just takes time.

“It’s been a relatively smooth process so far. There have been no major surprises or curveballs in the process, but it just takes time to do it properly.

“We would rather make sure we have all our i’s dotted and t’s crossed with that car. No-one is more excited than us to get that car on to the road, but we also want to make sure it’s a great product when we get it there.”

Jackson confirmed HSV is already thinking about expanding the Camaro line-up to additional models such as the Nurburgring lap record-setting ZL1 LE.

“I’d be lying if I said we aren’t interested in looking at it. We need to get everyone aligned and make sure we can get the core vehicle and we can do any engineering that’s required to make sure it’s compliant.

“Because we are a niche program we can look at.”

The Camaro is part of new era for HSV, which is also soon rolling out the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and has already launched a modified version of the Holden Colorado dubbed the SportsCat.

Translation - we stuffed up and will now offer an manual.

"This is a long-term program,"
I think this pretty much puts a nail in the coffin of the prospect of a factory RHD Camaro. Why else would HSV gear up for this if a factory RHD was coming.

GM has no presence in the UK post their sale of Opel / Vauxhall.

There will be no factory RHD Camaro.

No way. I remember seeing the cost book on a Eb 2 Fairmont Ghia v8. List price was about $48000 optioned up and the cost price to dealers was about $30000 too dealers plus interest and government charges. So that is about 40 percent off. These cars will be very close to mustang prices I think. A relative of mine worked at ford for a long time and he said the cost price at factory of a el falcon in 1998. It was $9000. Drive away price was about $30000. There is a lot of money in cars. Don’t believe the criminals that sell them.
