There's a big issue there. Things are different now due to draconian p plater laws, penatlies, more kids staying at home long due to increased rent/housing costs, fact is many have less interest in cars.
Mentioned before was young people more interested in 4wds as there's no fun on the streets anymore.
p platers aren't buying classics lol, and again as mentioned before it wont be pre 2000s stuff.
Life is different for young people these days, and they've been priced out of housing and classics. Wrong market, classics are for gen x and boomers and only amongst themselves, p platers and younger drivers are irrelevent (even if cashed up why would they spend so much and be caught out and have the car impounded/crushed due to being targeted/singled out due to the p plate?).

I get what you are saying, p platers ruin older cars so the survivors get rarer, but I don't think many are getting down into their hands as it stands now anyway.

Id happily own one of them as a near 40yo! Current one with some boost or the new update would make a fun track toy.

The last 5-10 years have seen P platers have some pretty good first cars, not sure if its cheapish credit or what but compared to the crap boxes we used to get around in kids have no idea how good they have it.

The only problem I see is cars are now too computerised, when I was 17 yrs old, you were forced to fix them yourself, unless you had a rich old man!
But now you need a computing degree to do anything, not a kid on P plates idea of fun, cars were fun to work on, see yourself how things worked or dident work, but now it's all been taken out of the hands of the owner, just too bloody complex for a 17 year old kid!

I think its never been easier to work on a car, with plug in diagnostics the car tells you whats wrong with it.
Even a dinosaur like me can do it, the younger generation being being so tech savvy should have no problems at all.
After that its just swapping parts out like an older model.

we were burning around dropping skids in 20 year old $3-4k XA GTs...

Got to disagree with you RallyeSports, they are not tech savvy but they are computer savvy, most 17 year olds I've met wouldn't know an injector to a sparkplug!

The magic is in the work, nutting out your own problems and fixing it with your mates, swapping parts is just an exercise, but getting your Cortina GT and stripping and rebuilding your motor, or port and polishing the heads, well that's what I'm talking about, kids today can't do all that practical stuff we did!

Tech is just another tool in the kit. If you don’t have the nous to work out when it’s feeding you red herrings, you’ll be stuck. People place too much weight on their OBD data sometimes. There’s still the point-and-pay option which might satisfy future “enthusiasts”.

Yep - stretched timing chain on boat anchor alloytec on VZ/VE will give you CMP fault codes rather than the actual problem, it 'points' you in a direction but doesn't necessarily tell you what's wrong or give further context around a problem.

I see where you're coming from, thats inclination thought and thats common no matter what the generation. Theres always going to be that person thats not mechanically inclined and will just have someone else fix it, I've had mates like that back in the day to now.

Like CB said the tech is just another tool and for me its a tool the youngens seem to have a pretty good grasp of. I've struggled a bit with most of my agricultural machinery having gone computer controlled and me being behind the eight ball with the tech. There was a time though when I didn't know how to use a spanner but I was inclined to learn as with the new methods of today.

Most of the tech tricks I've learned at work have been from my apprentices, kudo's to them too they're quite patient and forthcoming with help and I try to be the same when it comes to getting the physical tools out and passing on the art of spinning a spanner.

I cannot think of a better car as a first car than the little 2 door RWD.

plus on topic the old AE86 which I used to own, are worth heaps now

what would you suggest in the Ford Camp for a 17yo?

Says 60 year old man. Plenty of young ones are playing with cars and giving things a crack. Just you don’t see it as you are not hanging around them.

And in regards to not doing the engine maintenance things. They don’t need to. Oldies had to do it because the cars needed it. No adjusting points on a modern car

I remember my old man popping the bonnet of a brand new au falcon. Closing it and complaining that it’s all gotten to complicated for a regular person to repair. Here I am 22 years later fiddling with a 5.6L Windsor in an au

So Rallye Sport, what year is the Cortina?
Is it an early A frame with the flow through ventilation or after that model, I lived next to the Halewood Ford Plant until I left in 1968 for Australia, met Jim Clark and Paddy Hopkirk doing witches hats and slide reverse parking, must of been after 1964, both driving new Lotus Cortinas, I have never seen another like them, 2 door but where the rear door wasn't, there were door shaped pieces of cork stuck on had perforations in em, about 3 mm thick?

They walked up to the fence and spoke to us, pretty special meeting Jim Clark, I asked Paddy Hopkirk if he was driving a Cortina instead of a Mini now, he put his finger to his lips and said shush, too cool.

I'm feeling ya, the most terrifying thing for me is something with a carburettor - **** your mechanical black magic witchcraft, at least multi point EFI makes sense

Something that's 1990s/early 00s is very basic from an engine management standpoint, an EL ECU only has 60 wires.

There doesn’t need to be a strong connection between mechanical ability and classic car ownership. Plenty of people who can’t plumb, wire, concrete or carpent, buy houses.

AU Fairlane, fits all their ******** mates in comfortably, as such they'll end up being the deso all the time

5L for bonus points because it's slow and uses a **** tonne of fuel so they couldn't afford drugs and or alcohol.

Ha, reminds me of when i was in highschool. One bloke was keen as because his dad said he was buying him a car but didnt say what. My group of mates all new his dad and he was a cool dude. His dad bought him a fiat 850r niki. So as to not be able to run from the cops.
I also had an apprentice whos parents offered to buy him a car of their choice, his only input was he wanted a manual. He got a 1.3L 4 door toyota yaris. Again pretty funny. When you're 16/17, you cant pull chicks if they laugh at your ride.
