I see the HSV Colorado ad's are well and truly out and about right now . I suppose the Camaro ones will be coming fairly soon now , given that it's supposed to go on sale early in the new financial year , about mid July last time I read about it . IF I was a GM fan and if I wanted one bad I suppose spending 90K would be okay and being HSV built they'd do a quality job .
Surmising that this'll be a 'dip the toe in the water' experiment from the General before a real commit to limited RHD world markets will go ahead . The nominal figure is 1000 apparently to sell initially in OZ. Don't take this seriously because it's really just a 'pie in the sky ' stuff but wouldn't it be great if GM through HSV and Ford via Tickford etc were given licence to build RHD versions of the higher spec and optioned Camaro's and Mustangs for small markets within and outside of Australia for target markets in the Souhern Hemisphere/Pacific region ?. Not outright manufacturing by any means but a bit like when NZ used to assemble Falcons at least in the 1970's. These were stock XA's I think. Sounds like you are referring to CKD car.

If HSV buyers were happy to lay down 80k on a Commodore they'll not blink an eye at that for a Camaro. Question is, how many of those swinging buyers who bought Mustang because there was no alternative will now swing back the other way. |

Best measure is the 2002 Tickford Mustang.
It cost 89,000 back then. It had alot of factory support, an Australian ADR windscreen was installed in the US production line, along with JDM spec lights. It was more than moving the steering wheel over, floor sections had to be removed and new sections fitted, new engine mounts etc Its not hard to see how the Camaro can get its price.

Yep, the starting official price as per HSV is $90k but depending on exchange rates at the time this could easily be more and also if there are additional options as the base unit is $90k.

$90,000 dollars sounds a bit on the low side. On the Chev website the price for a 2SS auto is $39,450 US. Transport to Australia for RORO is around $7000(guestimate), so the price landed in Australia is approx $46,450US. Current exchange rate is around 75 cents, so 72.5 cents is what you get, so that makes the car $64,000 Aus . Add the amount for the wharf and importer handling fees of around $1000, now we are at $65,000, add 10% gst, another $6,500. Now the cost just to get the car into Australia is $71,500. A firm in Brisbane who specialise in right hand drive conversions quote a price of $44,000 to do a RHD conversion for a Camaro, so thinking HSV would be doing the conversion for a similar price the cost of will be around $115,500. Add too this registration, stamp duty, and dealer delivery costs and luxury car tax(?) The cost is a fair bit more than $90,000. Maybe the $90,000 was the HSV are going to charge for the vehicle landed in Australia. Then RHD conversion will be on top of that price.

HSV can do the conversion cheaper then these little firms. Plus they would have a deal on buying them, shipping them etc.

Even if they could by them cheaper, the consumer would not see it.

Bottom line, there's around $20,000 to $25,000 in added costs for Camaro buyers to wear
and the '19 Camaro stays with 8AT so they don't match Mustang's 10-speed auto or a 6-speed manual. No actual numbers on MY19 Mustang orders but it's mechanically different enough to justify upgrading to the new 10-speed auto, the better close ratio 6-speed manual, MT82-D4 = Tremec TR6060 MagneRide may also become a popular ordered item as it takes suspension to another level. But you are going to have to wait a while for it. “Absolutely, our intent is to have a manual,” HSV managing director Tim Jackson told motoring.com.au. “We know we have a customer base that wants a manual, we are working on it and I imagine we will have a manual as we move into late 2019.” The timing means the manual version of HSV’s locally-converted Camaro 2SS will likely be part of the facelift range unveiled in the USA. The Camaros in this year’s initial Australian allotment are pre-facelift MY18 models. HSV copped criticism for the auto-only specification of its initial Camaro 2SS coupe, first deliveries of which commence later than expected in August. Those cars are European specification, which because of a number of equipment fitments made sense to select for the conversion process. But that spec didn’t have manual available with it, hence the transmission’s initial omission from the line-up. “The specification of vehicle that made the most sense for us in this initial launch is an auto-only,” confirmed Jackson. HSV has yet to release pricing for the 2SS – that happens late June or early July – which it is converting to right-hand drive locally at its new Melbourne factory and will be available from selected Chevrolet-badged Holden dealers in Australia and New Zealand. Jackson said HSV would deliver “around 500” Camaros to dealers in 2018, of which motoring.com.au understands about 25 per cent have been sold so far. He said some Chevrolet/Holden dealers had already sold their allotment of the Ford Mustang fighter, but stressed the priority was not to over-commit to too much supply in the early stages of the program, which HSV originally said would involve up to 1000 Camaros a year. “I would rather be conservative in the number and be surprised on the upside than the reverse. This is a long-term program, but you can disappoint yourself from a business perspective if you get ahead of yourself.” The intricacies of local right-hand conversion had blown out launch timing for the Camaro slightly, Jackson confirmed. “It’s maybe a month delayed. It just takes time. “It’s been a relatively smooth process so far. There have been no major surprises or curveballs in the process, but it just takes time to do it properly. “We would rather make sure we have all our i’s dotted and t’s crossed with that car. No-one is more excited than us to get that car on to the road, but we also want to make sure it’s a great product when we get it there.” Jackson confirmed HSV is already thinking about expanding the Camaro line-up to additional models such as the Nurburgring lap record-setting ZL1 LE. “I’d be lying if I said we aren’t interested in looking at it. We need to get everyone aligned and make sure we can get the core vehicle and we can do any engineering that’s required to make sure it’s compliant. “Because we are a niche program we can look at.” The Camaro is part of new era for HSV, which is also soon rolling out the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and has already launched a modified version of the Holden Colorado dubbed the SportsCat. |

Translation - we stuffed up and will now offer an manual. "This is a long-term program," I think this pretty much puts a nail in the coffin of the prospect of a factory RHD Camaro. Why else would HSV gear up for this if a factory RHD was coming.
