From twitter:
"GM says it will 'discontinue vehicle and engine manufacturing and significantly reduce its engineering operations in Aust by the end of 2017" ...unlike Ford. |

Like the news of Ford ceasing local manufacturing operations this is not good.
I hope that these events force governments, organisations and individuals to wake up and smell the reality that has and will continue to hit us all. Until major changes are done at all levels this is going to continue. Next year will not be any better, expect big name tech companies to shed jobs too. IBM is on the verge of letting thousands go and contemplating closing AU offices down.

Sixty-five years after it first began producing cars in Australia Holden is set to confirm it will cease local manufacturing in 2017.
Reports surfacing across social media sites suggest Holden will address its factory workers in Adelaide and Melbourne at 2.00pm South Australian time, or 2.30pm Eastern time. The move will end weeks of intense speculation and years of uncertainty surrounding the General Motors’-owned brand’s Adelaide production line and Victorian engine plant from the company that was formed in 1856 and first started manufacturing cars locally in 1948. Advertisement The move will send shockwaves through the struggling automotive industry, which has warned of upwards of 50,000 job losses. It is also almost certain to force Toyota to follow suit, which relies heavily on the 160-odd component makers that rely on economies of scale to maintain competitive prices. But the determination of the recently-elected Tony Abbott-led Liberal government to cut vital funding to the industry also contributed. 2013 will go down as a dark year for the local automotive industry, with Ford confirming earlier in the year it would cease vehicle manufacturing by 2016. For almost two years the local manufacturers have been pitching its case for additional funding, pointing to overseas funding models that deliver generous incentives for automotive manufacturing plants. Holden media release:
GM to Transition to a National Sales Company in Australia and New Zealand Company to cease manufacturing in Australia by 2017 DETROIT – As part of its ongoing actions to decisively address the performance of its global operations, General Motors today announced it would transition to a national sales company in Australia and New Zealand. The company also said it would discontinue vehicle and engine manufacturing and significantly reduce its engineering operations in Australia by the end of 2017. “We are completely dedicated to strengthening our global operations while meeting the needs of our customers,” said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “The decision to end manufacturing in Australia reflects the perfect storm of negative influences the automotive industry faces in the country, including the sustained strength of the Australian dollar, high cost of production, small domestic market and arguably the most competitive and fragmented auto market in the world.” As a result of the company’s actions, approximately 2,900 positions will be impacted over the next four years. This will comprise 1,600 from the Elizabeth vehicle manufacturing plant and approximately 1,300 from Holden’s Victorian workforce.Holden will continue to have a significant presence in Australia beyond 2017,comprising a national sales company, a national parts distribution centre and a global design studio.GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux said an important priority over the next four years would be to ensure the best possible transition for workers in South Australia and Victoria. “This has been a difficult decision given Holden’s long and proud history of building vehicles in Australia,” said Devereux. “We are dedicated to working with our teams, unions and the local communities, along with the federal and state governments, to support our people.” The sale and service of Holden vehicles will be unaffected by this announcement and will continue through the extensive network of Holden dealers across Australia and New Zealand. Warranty terms and spare parts availability will remain unchanged. “GM remains committed to the automotive industry in Australia and New Zealand. We recognise the need for change and understand the government’s point of view. The Gov should create a Aussie Owned Coal business, extract and use it in Gov owned power stations while the price is down....there is going to be alot of people looking for work.
We knew this was coming, but it still hurts. Still, three years notice dulls the pain.

we have all known for some time that Holden are gone they just hadn't announced buy you obviously lack the intelligence to understand a light hearted response to an announcement we knew was coming . I feel sorry for someone with an apparent lack of sense of humour. maybe lack of intelligence ( as you have previously displayed) lead to your misunderstanding of my comment but I will refrain from calling you a moron in a public forum I after all have some morals

You guys think Falcon fans were angry with Ford's closure, wait till you se the reaction form the holden fans.....
This caps off the worst year in Australian Automotive history, 2016 and 2017 are going to be a tough time for local supporters.. Unlike Ford's announcement, the lead up to this has been veiled in secrecy and false promises of extending production, workers agreed to a sizable haircut on benefits in return for assurances of continued manufacturing, typical of GM in the US it was nothing more than a way of reducing closure costs it had already factored in, all GM waited for was for was the incoming CEO, Mary Barra's approval for a proposal sitting in front of her, something that didn't just appear....... |

Oh, it will benefit many a Northernern suburb of Adelaide bogan. With Holden soon to release hundreds of unskillid labourers into the work force, those unskilled and unemployed bogans will have another excuse to use on centrelink.

before anyone starts throwing political stones remember the failure of our auto industry is the fault of everyone out there driving an import where a local car would have done the same job . the blame lies with the buying public not any politician or party . the manufacturers are not to blame either they hung on longer than they should trying to keep things alive but could only loose so much money.
