I forgot something else.
I hate the fuse box cover dropping on your leg while doing some spirited driving.

And the cigarette lighter buzzing in it's holder. Does anyone else have their electric aerial go up, down, then up again when you start the car, or is it just mine?

My electric aeriel decided it no longer wanted to work one day haha
Haven't bothered installing a new motor as I am pretty sure when i put the headunit in I didn't even bother connecting the wire for the electric aeriel

I don't really hate anything about the car, its generally fairly easy to work from since I started out on latest model 4 cylinder FWD cars.
But, the distributor setup on an EL, why did it go EA, EB, ED with distributor/ignition coil, then to a coil pack setup on the EF (good idea), then back to distributor for EL, then AU back to coil pack? Not only that, the distributor is in a hard to reach spot and same with the ignition coil. The brakes are a bit average too but its a fairly heavy car. The headlights, not too happy about that but I'm going to fix it |

Low beam in the headlights are about as powerful as a couple of candles.
High beam is good though. |

i've had an ea ghia and now a ef gli, i liked both cars but like the ef more, the only problem i've had with the ef was head gasket and engine mounts, vibrating when in drive only, and the rain washed the clear coat off around the fuel filler, other than that no real problems

130 something kilowatts with a tailwind in stock form. 4.0litre.
But I will tell you driving my ED Fairmont around the place albeit on the occasional weekend now gives me a buzz and an ear to ear grin everytime. There is just something about it. It may not be the fastest or the shiniest or the most collectable but its a damn good car. Everything just works eg design, seating, ride, comfort, size etc. sorry guys but like it more than the EL Ghia I had. The drive puts all those trivial issues that can be sorted through regular maintenance in the she'll be right list. |

As said, smart lock is a pain.
Also EF/EL cup holders are so useless they may as well not be there. Fine normally but if you need to brake even slightly hard then you're cleaning up drink next time you stop

EL XR6
1. The high stance of the seats. Im 5ft11 and only had a couple inches of head room. 2. The Damn design to the headlights in which had to take out the battery/airbox to change a globe 3. Headgasket issue 4. The auto first gear, bloody ridiculous 5. The separate smartlock remote. 6. The friken rattles, especially one in the dash i could not locate 7. How the foam came away from the dash itself due to glue lifting off 8. Rattles in headlining/squeaks from sunroof 9. Rubber disentegrating on the quarter windows 10. Steering wheel couldnt go high enough to compensate for the high seats 11. How the XR6 didnt come with a trip comp and had to install one 12. Average brakes, especially the rears but with good pads was acceptable Actually, my ED falcon had less issues that i remember

After an accident and repairs done, the panel shop couldnt adjust them, the Ford repair centre couldnt do them (they charged me and i got a refund after showing them the poor attempt and a apology form the service manager) and my mechanic couldnt adjust them (refund as well)
I eventually did. Its a battery out, airbox out and car running situation i found Secondary way, jump leads on battery which would be out the car and leads connected to car battery terminals.

Didn't think they did, just thinking of my dads au, but I haven't had to change them either haha.
Just to add to my other post, clear coat peeling is another big bug bear of mine on e series. (And magnas)

Think the standard e-series cars were very easy from memory to change globes, just the XR series were notoriously fiddly

One thing I hated about all the e series I have owned is the bloody noise the central locking makes: rrrrrrrRRRRRRRR!
The umbrella handbrake initially peeved me too.....but now, you have no idea how many times I have puched the lower dash on the AU looking for it

Has anyone mentioned that little oil-leak on the I6's that comes from just behind the top of the Timing Cover where it meets the Head(?)
Has surely killed literally thousands of Alternators around the nation over the years... Best Wishes, Sooty. |

Even after spending a small fortune on replacing 99% of the bushes and worn components in the car (EB Series 1 Ghia) and countless wheel alignments, it still wanders like crazy.

Also one time the front cigarette lighter shorted out and nearly set the car on fire.

Sorry! - Forgot to mention the various impossible-to-get-apart underbonnet wiring-harness connecters. Maybe you're meant to use a variety of special tools to undo them, or assistance from a 2nd pair of hands (still difficult regardless...). A lot of guys probably just end up breaking them, or taking them to their local Fraud Service Centre when the electrical/sensor work in question needs to be done...
Best Wishes, Sooty. |

Having spent many years behind the wheel of an EL and now getting around in an FG....there's absolutely nothing I miss about the EL! Not the crap (and sometimes dangerous) handling, the non-existent brakes, the crap seats, the rattly brittle interior, the poor fuel economy and that whoooooop first gear whine... If someone can get it started and out of my back yard, I'll buy you a slab! But thanks for all the help you guys gave me while I was still getting around in it - much appreciated.
