I have learnt now though!
Before I had kids, I used to do this all the time. Now, when walking with my kiddies and being forced to walk on the road in narrow suburbian streets because someones parked halfway up their driveway and blocked the footpath I completely understand the danger this causes.

The law is there, he broke it. And because of greedy councils he got booked for it.

I knew about this law, but only cause my dad got up me when I broke it once many years ago so I can understand if someone doesnt know it.

What I dont understand is whats with all the personal attacks, do we all really lack the intelligence that we cant argue a point without verbally attacking one another.

Yeah, and it's bloody stupid that it is allowed.
I've been in the UK for the last 3 years, and If I had a dollar, no make that a pound, for every time i've nearly had a head on with a car pulling out of a space (in a string of parked cars) on the left and not being able to see (because the driver is sitting kerb side) if there is a car coming towards them.

I haven't done it once in the time that I've been over here, because I am fully aware of the law (as it stands in Oz) and didn't want to get into any bad habits that might get me into trouble back home - I am finally returning to Oz in December.

How the hell do you expect every road user to know EVERY damn 'road rule' out there? A little bit of common sense should prevail every now and again.

Oh, and as for parking backwards, i did this in my lisence test and the examiner confirmed AFTER i parked "backwards" in a residential street that it was perfectly legal...not recommended because some douche-bag would do it on a main road but if it is obviously safe then yes....IT'S LEGAL!!!!! i passed my test that day

any comments SlickedXR8?

Satria, have a look at post 43 in this thread. Where does it say that it is legal to park on the opposite side of the road??

Polyal is in the wrong - build a bridge (Get over it!!)

Not saying that it wasn't illegal, just that its one of those shitty fines to get. Like getting told off for driving with your headlights on during the day.
Yeah I got what I deserved, but I cant believe that there are people who get paid to find this crap at 8:44AM! There has to be more pressing things to be done.

And there isn't actually parks on the other side, on the school side there is nothing, so the only parks in the street are meant for residents.

Ill get a pic soon to show the street, its a tiny one that even some residents have to park half way on the footpath, which is apparently illegal aswell
: . Both of my nieghbours had their cars parked like I had mine last night too. :yeees:

You know you could still even now after 3 years go back to your insurer or hers for that matter as the descion to not cover you due to illeagle parking is wrong. Your car could have been parked in the middle road. Fact is she is liable for undue care whilst reversing. Hell you could have been parked across her driveway. I tell you this from an insrance point of view as I work in the industry. Get the descion reviewed, and if they still don't wanna cover it take the matter to thier internal dispute service and then if still no joy to the insuarance obudsman. You might even get credit for inflation.

Sheesh!
It may not be taught in the driving lesson, but it is noted in the drivers rule book, and it is our duty to read and memorize the book before we complete and pass the driving test...

This is what I though was the case. If a vehicle is parked (illegally or not) and gets hit then the driver of the car that hit a stationary car is liable.

For mine firstly I find a lot of young drivers do it most. Second if you do it in your street today and not get fined then you may do it in a wider street tomorrow and before long you may do it crossing a busy road albeit when no traffic comming. Not saying you will but one often follows the other. Have you ever cosidered you may have been dobbed in by a fellow street user/resident. The primary school you mentioned opposite, do children walk around these narrow streets after school? Maybe it is a bit tough but you should have known just by the fact that very few if any other drivers do it in your street or anywhere else.

Commonsense says you park on the left.

Laziness says you park where you like.
