So many conflicting reports between the stations though. Here's the British down playing the impact it will have on Hawaii & the western US coast line, then theres the Americans blowing it right up.

the waves came in to hawaii no bigger then most big surf waves. there was no tidal surge, just waves. the tidal surge is what these pacific islands need to be worried about, but it looks like it wont happen to most places. the 200,000 dead we saw in the 2004 indonesian tsunami wont occur again here in japan, as japan isnt built like indonesian, not as many people live near the shore, infact its mostly farmland that will be engulfed with water. even the parts that are settled by houses, the houses are brick houses and much stronger then the houses in indonesia by the sea. we may see about 1000 casualties, but nowhere near the amount of the 2004 indonesia tsunami, thankfully i must say.

The waves in Hawaii were higher then 48cm!
Just watching news this morning showed a lot of coastal areas there which had plenty of water, though it wasnt devestating. 2M was the figure given and not long after those waves hit a 4.8earth quake hit Hawaii as well. The reactor in Japan is leaking up to 8times the normal acceptable level at this stage... this isnt good.

after watching the sky news it would be very surprising if the death toll does`nt skyrocket sadly, and there is still a state of emergency at the reactor, US is flying in coolant for the reactor,
its amazeing how mother nature can wipe out what has taken humans years to build in a matter of minutes........... best wishes to all concerned with this disaster. |

Ok a 1000times above normal!
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...12/3162223.htm Thousands evacuated amid nuclear leak fears Updated 2 hours 16 minutes ago Fukushima Nuclear plant Radioactive leak fears: The Fukushima nuclear plant (Reuters/Kyodo) * Related Story: Residents near nuclear plant told to evacuate * Related Story: DFAT issues Japan travel warning * Related Story: Japan comes to terms with earthquake horror * Related Story: Record quake unleashes tsunami on Japan * Related Story: Millions stranded in Tokyo subway shutdown The Japanese government has declared an atomic emergency because of the "possibility" of a radioactive leak from a nuclear reactor in the quake disaster zone. But operators of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant have warned that radiation could already have leaked. This morning Japanese prime minister Naoto Kan said thousands of people living within 10 kilometres of the nuclear plant must evacuate. The amount of radiation reached around 1,000 times the normal level in the No. 1 reactor's control room, the Kyodo news agency reported the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency as saying. Trade minister Banri Kaieda earlier said authorities were nearing a decision to release radioactive steam from the troubled nuclear reactor in a bid to ease a pressure build-up after its cooling system was damaged by the massive earthquake. "Pressure has risen in the container of the reactor and we are trying to deal with it, "a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power, which operates the plant, said. The government had earlier said no radiation leaks were detected among its reactors after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday, Japan's biggest on record, triggering huge tsunamis. The plant had shut down after the quake, but a reactor cooling system failure had led to the evacuation instruction, a situation the government said was "under control". Japan has dispatched around 160 military personnel, sending its chemical corps and an aircraft on a "fact finding mission" to the nuclear plant, Kyodo said. Prime minister Naoto Kan had earlier said no radiation leaks had been detected from Japan's nuclear power stations after the massive quake struck the country. The IAEA's Incident and Emergency Centre had said that the four nuclear power plants closest to the quake which occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, had been "safely shut down". According to the industry ministry, a total of 11 nuclear reactors automatically shut down at the Onagawa plant, the Fukushima No. 1 and No. 2 plants and the Tokai No. 2 plant after the strongest recorded earthquake in the country's history. A fire that broke out in the turbine building of Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi Prefecture had been extinguished, the government said. Operator Tohoku Electric Power said there were no indications of a radioactive leak. Miyagi prefecture was one of the areas worst hit by the tsunami. Millions of households were without power in north-eastern Japan, according to Tohoku Electric. Japan - located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet and create a string of volcanoes and seismic hot spots - records 20 per cent of the world's major earthquakes. As an industrial powerhouse nation poor in energy resources, Japan also draws about 30 per cent of its total power from its 53 nuclear plants.

On a side note, is Andrew O'keefe the worst "presenter" on TV???
Am I alone in thinking this guy is the most incincere twat? Watching again today on Sunrise discussing the Japan tsunami his attitude appears to be demeaning and stupid (as it always is). Even during the floods of Brisbane and cyclone Yasi...

The latest from the Fukushima reactors is that the government is now saying that there has been "no radioactive leak so far" at the nuclear plants. That seems to contradict an earlier statements by Japan's nuclear safety agency and the Tokyo Electric Power company.

Even if the reactor went to fail point as they can keep coolant levels hig enough the immediate danger would be to the local population unlike Chernobyl which was a dry melt down that became a China Syndrome event, where there is zero cooling and the core melts the reactor and hits ground water causing an explosion. Hopefully it is only a gas vent leak which is at least fixable and minimal risk to the majority, but I prayer for those that have to repair it. |

172 earthquakes near the epicentre of the 8.9 since the 10th of March.
Average magnitude of 5.4. That is a lot of energy release. You can see it's even set off magnitude 6.2 and 5.5 earthquakes on the mainland. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...e10/140_40.php http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...140_40_eqs.php
