We have just bought an 89 Maverick - petrol / gas 4.2lt, I will be towing a horse float about 11 times a year. Any idea's on fuel economy on petrol / gas ?
Please tell me it will tow well. Our mitsubishi Triton was written off for hail damage

It will tow fantastic, but fuel economy out of the petrol/gas when towing is shyte to say the least

i have gained 10 kilos since then lol ,should be ok more about tune than anything ,no worse than most modern fourbies ,and they are still the best tow rig for your money .thats why i had 3 of them

what do you call shyte fuel economy?

with the 3lt triton we had I uses $130 to go from Benalla to Heathcote and back - about 300-400km I thought that was bad.

We looked at a 4.2lt deisle but thought the gas would be a cheaper option for normal trips as I probably only tow 8 times a year and go no further than 1.5hrs away at the most

Sorry but new to the 4wd world other than the triton

Theres a guy on this forum, or Xfalcon, I can't remember with one of these with a turbo'd Falcon I6 in it, I remember it because of his awesome looking manifold he made.

Going back a bit but the family used to have a 90 Maverick auto on LPG. It was about 21 litres per 100 around town and not much less on the highway.

Edit: I think that was running on petrol, LPG would be a little bit more.

the early GQ carb versions are the dearer of the GQ range in petrol
the EFI 4.2 are a bit more fuel friendly,but not much
20++l per 100klm is about the norm for these
LPG do use more than fuel(30% more ??),but its cheaper to buy
they are a terrific towing rig,and for a 3 tonne lump the 4.2 can get em moving quite well
the early maverick are carb
for price, well i think
ZA 289 is pritty close
but youll pay upwards of 10k for a late 4.2 EFI (97)

A good mate of mine sold his 1989 diesel one 18 months ago for $12500

Having lived with one for a few years, I cannot see the value in them. Spend 4 grand on a decent EL wagon and you will have a vastly vastly (vastly) better car. And whenever you need a low range 4wd, go down to AVIS and spend 80 bucks a day on a brand new turbo diesel Patrol.

being a 4x4 owner i cant see how u can compare an EL falcon to a nissan patrol
mine doesnt do much of road as such (have others for that)it was mainly bought for its towing capabilities
the only other 4x4 that comes close to the nissan patrol in the gq range would be the 80 series land cruiser, but their reputation commandes higher prices
i think the market is who determines the price u pay for anything
but each to their own

I owned a 1993 GQ patrol TI in 5 speed manual and fuel economy was phenomenal. 100 litre LPG tank under the car and 75 litre ULP tank. Combined range was 1400 km as I didn't fill up on a trip from Canberra to toowoomba. Filled her up when I hit the Sunshine Coast. Tune it properly and it will return great fuel economy. Forget big carbs and the likes...there is where the fuel goes. It had hurricane header and 3 inch exhaust and not much else done to it. Religiously serviced every 5000km without fail.

Brother now owns it and is still going great...and with 600000km on it now. Can't kill them and looking at buying a SWB maverick in the next few days. Look after them and they will go forever!

Having also owned one I tend to agree that they are overrated and overpriced for what they are. They are slow, gutless, have appalling fuel economy and cost a fortune to maintain due to overpriced spare parts and endless niggling faults and failures.
I don't know about the diesel, but the petrol versions have an appetite for heads and head gaskets no matter how well they are looked after, which is typical of Nissan as they couldn't design an engine without some sort of inherent fault to save themselves - look at all the dramas with the ZD30 for example.
Despite their size they are very cramped inside. The front seats dont slide back far enough and legroom in the rear is just about non existent. They are also one of the most unsafe vehicles on the road today. No crumple zones, no airbags, wafer thin pillars and doors without intrusion bars.
If off road use is your main priority then by all means go for it, but don't get sucked in by the hype - imo they definitely leave a lot to be desired.

rear main seal, clutch, repack the wheel bearing, change diff oils and gearbox when doing the clutch and rear main seal, transfer case oil.
