Addicted to washing your car?

I don't know who does this, but I find coffee stains regularly on my spoiler at work. Bye bye clear! I do a once a week wash, polish every month and try to do the interior every week too. Otherwise the novelties worn off, it's far too much hassle to keep a black car immaculate 24/7. If it was a coupe I'd certainly keep up the vigil!

Hey all,
Living in Adelaide under water restrictions, and owning a Blood Orange Gt with terrific paint, got me thinking about how I was going to look after the Paint work in the long term.
So unless the car gets dirty on a trip I try to resist washing more than once a week, although I do a daily check each day for Bird droppings, and industrial fall out, and do a seperate wash off for that particular Panel at home by hand from a bucket and watering can.

Of late I have been going out late on Friday Nights to the local Brush less Car wash and taking a Bucket, this particular car wash has not put out a..No Bucket Washing.. sign yet.

I am using that Meguiars NXT Generation Car Wash shampoo and the only part of the Brush less Car wash that I use is the High pressure rinse cycle.

Have already bucket washed the wheel rims at home, in the Car wash I use the high pressure rinse to wash surface Dirt off the car and wet it down.
Then fill up the Bucket from the Gun adding shampoo, and fill seperate bucket with water only.

Then I use the Meguiars hand mit and wash each panel down and rinse off after about half the car is done....the High pressure rinse I use at its first setting where pressure is lower, when I use high pressure I back the Gun right off.
Comes up a treat....

Mind you this is late every Friday Night....so I am not holding anybody up by Bucket Washing...

My missus understands...I am truly blessed with her. It does not matter what time of the Day or Night it is, if I have to go out and do somthing in regards to the GT...like washing or refueling or buying parts, I just let her know I am going.

Ahhhh!!! thanks for all that info, I always thought that I must've been a bit bent and twisted, always lining up steering wheels, vents, gear knobs, cigarette lighters etc. but it seems there's quite a few of us.

Being a car bore and a concourse addict (can do this since I only drive weekends most of the time). I will most definitely wash the car after a drive in the rain. However I find if the car is detailed thoroughly and driving in dry nice weather, you can get away with washing every 2 weeks. You just have to "spot clean" the dirt.

Some of my car obession habbits:

1. Yes air vents have to be set a certain way (centre stack vents flush with angle of the dash.
2. Leather seats conditioned and dyed (I want to keep that deep black look and minimise the cracking.
3. Plastic wheel wells and splash shields (blackened and clean but not the artificial silicon shiny look, this is to achieve the showroom new car look).
4. People ridicule me on this, all foods go in the boot. I don't want food odour in the interior.
5. Tyres set at optimum pressure 38 front, 36 rear.

And your were spot on about the respect thing as well. You feel better driving a clean car.....if others see that you respect your own things, then they will have more respect for you as a result.....

I wash mine 2 times a week. At work we have top notch high pressure cleaners. Some really really really strong degresser for the wheels and some nice acid based cleaner for the brake calipers. Soapy water through a hose and really good sponges.

Makes cleaning my car great and really easy.

Love cleaning mine as bionic comes up great. In summer I think 2 - 3 times a week would not be out of the question. I find the worst part about my car is the dark argent wheels, they always look dirty / dusty.....

I laughed when I read some of the strange compulsions people have on here with respect to air vents etc etc..... my girlfriend says I have the same disease.

We have some hot weather down here at the moment. Cruising with a clean car makes the metallic in the paint pop out. Looks the goods. I'll be washing the car after work tonight ready for some weekend cruising.

Mine gets washed weekly, whether it's been used in the past week or not on usually on either a Wednesday or Thursday night, unless rain is predicted that weekend in which case I'll leave it.

Even though it's garaged and is not used on weekdays (normally) the car still gets dirty being black

Two bucket method with microfibre mitt and drying towels....No high pressure hose except in wheel arches. Good quality shampoos and a going over with a spray wax afterward. (Duragloss Aquawax or Optimum Car Wax) ...Tyre black and , if needed wheel and window cleaners (otherwise just use car shampoo on these)

Every month an interior vacuum and dedicated window cleaner and wheel cleaner, metal polish on exhaust tips,

Every 3 months a new application of paste wax

Every 6 months a full detail with claybar, polish and rewax..fabric cleaner on seats and carpets

I can understand washing a car twice a week if it's used as a daily driver, but three times a week is bordering on obsessive compulsive disorder

Mine gets a wash once every fortnight, today i vaccumed the interior instead of washing the exterior, as there is a car show coming up and ill give it a full wash and polish/wax a few days before that!

when i first got my car, i had a serious problem i would wash it at whatever chance i get, but now that the paint is stuffed i dont, but its getting resprayed soon then i will be back to my old ways lol

I used to wash my car every Sunday ! But i have gotten lazy and now lucky if i do it every fortnight ! but when i get some mags and a respray then once i week maybe twice will be good !

Washing causes hairline scratches that are apparent in certain light conditions. If you're addicted to washing a car frequently, make sure the sponges and polishing cloths are totally grit free, and that all mud and grit is removed with a garden hose before the soaping commences.

There is a difference between polishing and waxing. Polishing removes a fine surface of the paint... it's like a fine cutting compound. On the other hand, waxing does not remove any paint, instead it fills the fine gaps and irregularities in the paint surface.

Polishing, or cutting compounds, are only needed if the paint is damaged or oxidised. Therfore, best if you apply a wax if the paint is in reasonable condition.

If you polish frequently, then you will eventually reveal the car's undercoat.

I mix up some McGuiyars Cleaner into a spray bottle
(I have the quick detailer stuff as well)

Mist the car wipe it off lightly with a microfibre cloth
go back over it with a clean microfibre cloth
Clean the windows Clean the wheels

this is pretty quick and easy to do. (once a week)

Do it on the sunday morning before I go for a cruise.

I give it a real good clean with Bucket(s) and wax once a month.

Those McGuiairs products are good and the more you use them the better the shine

once is fine

But whatever puts a smile on your dial
a clean detailed car is such a pleasure to drive.

I put my spray bottle on the roof

if it does not slide off unassisted it is not clean
there is clean and there is clean and then there is clean

I am going to clay bar it soon.

I alway have some detailer in the boot and some microfibre cloths
and light cloths any bird poo or whatever get's zapped.


I find this give me a nice looking vehicle that I am happy to drive.

I only wash my car before driving it on a run to make sure it dries properly no water sitting anywhere hidden. Will polish car once or twice a year depending on conditions and wax at same time.

I do know someone that is addicted to changing there oil alot more than washing there car not metioning any names FATASSLANDAU

LOL, I am in the same boat as you! People are not allowed to see my car dirty! I even slide up underneath the petrol tank and clean all around there, anything that has dried water spots from washing gets the makeover.
Whoever gets to buy my car (when it comes time to sell) will get one mighty fine clean example! Tragic!
