HULK BA, I preface this by saying I'm not making judgement, my thoughts are based on the kid was only seen to be crouched down near your rims.

Some have mentioned the possibility of retribution / payback. While it is true in extreme circumstances your home and occupants are a sitting target, other thoughts are in my mind.

When I was a young kid, after running away from home, my father and his mate found me in a bus shelter. They were unsuccessfully trying to get me to walk to the car, I was kicking screaming punching. They came very close to be bashed by a car load of good-guys driving past. (The fact I denied being related didn't help).

Imagine if the kid was screaming for help when being chased or he put up a good fight when his shirt was grabbed.

Without knowing what the kid had done while crouched, it makes it hard to know what is appropriate action in the event the situation escalated. It also makes it hard to defend any action if confronted by any one (inc police) coming to the kid's aid.

Speaking of retribution, in the mid 90s, on police advice I didn't take action against a teenager. The police were already investigating him and his mates for arson leading to death. He was later convicted and locked up. I'm glad I don't have to watch over my shoulder.

These days I think twice before doing what used to be right.

I'm 17 and i see all the younger kids, like 12,13 14 and stuff with big mouths, i was never like that, and its just getting worse. The kids know that there will not be any consequences of their actions so they go about doing what they like. They know someone in the shopping centre isn't going to tell them off or give em one across the ear so they go on about acting like little shits.

It ****** me off when young kids be smartasses and you can;t just go over and belt them a few, and they know this.

I'm only 18 myself but the difference between how kids <15 now and when I was a that age behave is staggereing. And yes thats only a couple of years ago I'm quite aware, but I don't know if my area is just going to ****, or new people moving in or what.
When I was a new teenager, I'd ride my bike everywhere with my mates- after school, all weekend, whenever I had a spare second. Sometimes when we were staying over someones house we'd go for a ride at night. We thought it was pretty risky doing that, just riding around because we weren't allowed too.
But now, you'd walk down the street coming home from a club or w/ever, and you see kids in year 8/9 roaming around looking for trouble drinking goon or smirnoff.
You see a small kid 15 years old try and gee some 20 y.o bloke for a fight, but has a dozen mates waiting for anything to go down, and you know atleast one's got a blade.
I really don't like what I'm seeing my town turn into.
I moved here from Doonside when I was 4, and remenber growing up in this wonderful safe place. Nothing ever happened, no breakins, car jacks, etc. Crime was minimum is my point. But as time went on, and I got older, around yr 9 maybe, I saw a shift. Even at school a few grades below, kids were different to how it was when I was there, bad different.
Another 3 years past that and the shift has definiatly made its way into mainstream.
I'd hate to see this place in another 15 years, beacuase in the last 15, it has gone from, IMO, a nice, quite town, to a town full of trouble makers hard ****s.

When I first went to highscool, I remember the big kids in year 12, I had some respect for them, they were older and double my size.

When I was in year 12 and double the size of the year 7 kids, I still remember them flipping the bird at us and getting all smart. Times have protected them too much to the loss of respect. Maybe we need to get back to the days of flushing their heads down the toilet to bring back a little respect. Sure I could have done that to stamp some authority but shouldn't have to.

good on you, hopefully he learned a valuable lesson. Had a similar funny one many years back. After getting home from work at 6am was woken by a knock on the door around 9am. Stumbled out of bed, by the time I pulled some pants on and got to the door I saw an older gent walking around and bend down beside my ute parked on the nature strip. Thought what is he upto? Grabbed a shirt and walked out in time to see him drive off up the street, had a walk around the ute to find he had knocked off one of my mag wheel nuts? Only had the old peanut style mags that the nut was prob worth about $2 at the time, had a bit of a chuckle and went back to bed. Big risk for a $2 nut

I think you did what most of us would do or would want to do in this case. I have witnessed a work mate at the time (more than 10 years ago) walk up on a high school student who had removed 3 caps from his Holden's mags and was in the process of unscrewing the last cap. The student was then grabbed and was issued with a lets' just say a roughing up/cautioning session. The owner of the Holden was a reasonably strong fella and definately went to far. The young fella was ok but was shocked by reaction from the owner, needless to say but same for all who witnessed the incident.

You did a good job and appeared to think it through at the time by trying to teach the 10 year old a valuable lesson. He is at an age where a lesson learned especially one regarding theft of property no matter if it is a $2.00 valve cap may make him think twice next time.

I have also been a victim of this criminal act many times and have almost given up on replacing the caps with flash ones but they look so good.

I wish I had a dollar for every time a parent has justified/made excuses for their child's behaviour. As a teacher, I can tell you if I did, I'd be a very rich man!

been there done that it ended up costing me over $1000 from the kids bogan family putting bear bottles through the rear windscreen.

the only way to fix the issue for good was moving to a house where the front door is 100+m from the road, any **** wanting to damage my property now will be buried next to tiger along the back fence.

When I was about 11 I was walking home one day and found some berries on a tree. Being a kid I thought it would be fun to start throwing them at cars and I hit one.
About 30 seconds later I was having a stern talking to after sprinting away down the street. It ended up with me never wanting to throw anything at a car again, even after only having a talking to.

This kid should have no trouble remembering what happened to him which will hopefully deter him from doing this sort of thing in the future. Who knows? He could even share some of his newfound wisdom with his friends. Either way, this world is now a slightly better place due to your actions.

My wife works in a retail outlet store, it's amazing what you cannot do with shoplifters.

Two highschool girls decided to put a whole heap of underwear on under their uniforms
and walk out the front door. My wife noticed the tags in the change booths and went after
them, she approached both of them and asked them to return to the store, they did what
she asked thinking nothing could be proved. little did they know that centre mamagement
was advised and took over the matter called the police and interviewed them.
They went to water and confessed everything.

These kids aren't hardened criminals and fold under the weight of authority but if we let
them continue to get away with petty crime, they progress to even more daring actions.
Nip it in the bud i say, just do it the right way...

Oh, one other thing. Two very disgruntled mothers arrived at the store and abused staff,
how dare they detain their daughters. Sorry but your daughters returned to the store
voluntarily and are with centre management being interviewed by police....

As the kid across the road from me said to the cops when they found him in the drivers seat of a stolen car chroming aerosol with a bottle of Beam next to him, "f off, you can't touch me, I'm only 9 years old!"
He terrorized the street pretty badly until he got caught badging my neighbors car, he gave a bit of backchat, a clip on the ear from cars owner, and he never played up in this street again.
P.S. He's 10 now and not living there anymore.
Oh for a return to the days when if you played up the coppers would give you a good kick up the backside and tell you to get home

When I was a little guy, maybe 10 years old, a kid across the road and I of same age started a fire in an alley near a house up the street, we walked away into the sunset giggling but for some reason turned back to go put it out as there were houses nearby. When we returned fire was a little out of control, we were both almost burnt alive trying to put it out but we just had to. We did stop it but it scared the hell out of us. Really scared me how we had to struggle to stop it, both crying and so frightened. I never touched fire again. I'm so glad we went back, who knows what could have happened.

I hope the kid I grabbed learnt something

coppers still do that but now kids swear on revenge or have a sook to their wealthy parents to try sue the cops.

Agreed with some of the above posts about the daddy beating down your door, albeit unfortunately. I love my cars and get jumpy whenever I see someone too close to them parked out the front. I would have done the same thing though! Car thieves etc don't start off as car thieves. They start off as innocent young kids stealing little things like valve caps and getting away with it :P

Herein lays the problem with most of society.
Parents in the old days would, when confronted by the truth that their child was caught breaking the law would actually side with the law or the person who was affected with their childs actions.

These days a lot of parents react almost violently towards the person who caught their child or accuses their child of being a little crook (some dont even react or care less).

One example i overheard at work was a co-worker (single female) whinging about her daughters catholic school rules. The schools dress code says only plain ear rings (one in each ears) no nose studs etc etc etc... and also plain hair styles and no un-natural colours in the hair etc...
She whinged for 15mins that her daughter (who had just called her mom to tell her she was being sent home) was sent home because she had dyed her hair and was wearing 2 ear rings in each ear (she is 12).
The mum then rings the school and starts to get narky over the phone, only to be told that they had signed the dress code before enrollment etc etc....

My dear co-worker then went a bit quiet and someone said to her why you send your kid there if your gonna whinge about the dress code? she isnt even catholic...
her responce was that she wanted the best education for her daughter.

Strangley just 15 mins ago she was whinging and saying how dare they tell my daughter what she can and cant wear blah blah blah....

I'm glad this thread came up again, I've got a story to tell haha.

Last Saturday night I was at work (Mcdonalds), and I was just doing my work as usual. Then a girl from the front comes running out and tells me some kid threw a coke at my car. At first a thought yeah whatever good joke. (Because my car was parked in the spot right next to the enterence, in front of everyone and a clearly visible security camera. No one would be that dumb to pick my car surely) Then the manager comes and tells me the same thing, that some kid in red chuck a drink at my car. I filled with rage and asked her were they were. Turns out they came in to order something. Dumb.
As I said I filled with rage and stormed out the front and went up to these three kids, spotted the one in red straight away. They were about 14 or 15 maybe.
I said 'What one of you little s! threw s! at my car?! Went on for a few minutes giving it to the kid in red who deinied it and was scared of his nut. His mates silent and scared shitless. BTW I'm 18 and 6'5 and pretty big so I towered over this kid with a scooter.
I got a bucket of hot water and threw him a cloth and said you've got 5 minutes to clean it, if its not done when I get back you better start running'
So I went back to work while the manger watched them clean the car. Gold.

The point of this is to say I have now been in the same position as the op. Previous to this I never would have imagined myself yelling at some kid in the dining room of a maccas while working calling him everything in the book. But when something happens to your car, especially when you love it as much as I do, you can't help but go ballistic. Something just comes over you and takes away your rationality. I wish the kid was older so I could whack him one.
