And what happened to the so called "free trade".. Ripped off big time Australian government!! Put that exise on there imports & watch them change there minds.. They have more to lose then we do!!

I would also hazard a guess that with a new $400mill Ford factory coming online soon in Thailand plus Ford Australia's growth in sourcing from Thailand may also "convince" the Thai government not to put further impediments in the way of some vehicle importing back their way.

It's a difficult one to steer around! It does seem that at least there would be no import duty of 80% on Australian made products going to Thailand. But, the excise duty which is applied after that skews in favour of Pickups. Which are predominantly made in Thailand at just 3% excise for under 3250cc. A car with similar capacity (not likely to be made in Thailand) cops 50% excise.

A Passenger Pickup Vehicle is SUV or is it a T6 Ranger based SUV? But that will cop 20% under 3250cc. 50% over 3250cc. If that isn't a softroader type SUV then the under 3000ccc & 220hp excise of 40% will apply.

So, a Territory might actually have 20% or 40% excise applied. With no import duty, it might be quite competitively priced!

If it's considered to be a Passenger Car not a Passenger Pickup Vehicle, then yes under 2000cc and 220hp it would be only 30% excise.

This is another good reason to perhaps try an EcoBoost Territory! Although the output of 240hp would need to be curtailed to 220hp.

An example of an initiative designed to sustain local manufacturers!

In regards to the tax refund scheme, I agree that something like that would be great for Australian producers. Imagine it applied here for cars up to $35k AUD. So, you could buy an FG2 XR6 and then get the GST back! Awesome.

But, how is that WTO 'legal'? I remember cash for clunkers programs overseas which had to be open to everything due to protectionism issues. ie France couldn't just apply it to French cars and Germany to German cars etc.

2l Ecoboost as an entry level Territory engine would be good. I think the Thai people will lap them up, provided they have the income. There is money in Thailand.

What happened to the 2.7L V6 Ecoboost idea? If the I6 goes a 2.7L Ecoboost should be right on the money to move a Territory along with smoothness, power, torque and economy. TX models should come standard with the 2L Ecoboost, and the 2.7L Ecoboost should be in TS and Titanium with AWD available in the 2.7L Ecoboost and 2.7TDi, with TDi optional across the range.

We're just talking Thailand here. What about Malaysia and Singapore? These two countries have wealthy segments and they'd love the comfort the Territory provides which is up there with the X5's and the Mercs, but at a cheaper price.

Also SE Asia are LPG users. Some sort of Direct injection LPi (DLPi) on the Ecoboost engines would make them phenomenally efficient and powerful too. Vialle are already prototyping this technology with VW, and the technology even uses the original petrol injectors to do it. Even simpler than LPi. It should marry in with Ecoboost like peas and carrots.

Becomes a defacto import duty however, I hope the FTA made provision for this sort of thing...

They are only going to sell it in Titanium spec, if they were going to de-content it they would just sell TX or TS.

FORD Australia’s home-grown Territory is being shown at the Bangkok motor show with a view to exporting the SUV to Thailand – source of a growing number of Ford vehicles sold in Australia.

Officially, the vehicle is on display to gauge public interest, but plans are afoot to introduce to the Falcon-based Territory into Thai Ford dealerships for sale as a premium SUV alongside the Thai-built Ranger that was also designed and engineered in Australia.

The export proposal was aired at the show where the Ford executive who oversaw the development of the original Territory in Australia, Trevor Worthington - who transferred to Bangkok in 2008 as Ford Asia-Pacific and Africa product planning director - helped to unveil the new locally made Ford Focus on the same stand.

A handful of Territorys were exported to Thailand when the Thai-Australia free-trade agreement was struck in 2005, but the program fell over when the Thai government introduced local regulations such as a 60 per cent registration excise on all foreign cars with petrol engines over 3.0 litres.

The arrival of the European-sourced 2.7-litre V6 diesel in the latest SZ Territory helps to reduce that impost to 50 per cent (for diesel engines over 2.0 litres), making exports more viable.

Ford Australia public affairs director Sinead Phipps told GoAuto that Ford’s team in Thailand said the Territory had already received positive feedback from the exercise, which would involve a single top-shelf Titanium model.

She said the program would involve small numbers – about 100 a year – and that at this stage there were no plans to export to other Asian countries such as Malaysia or Indonesia.

“We are just going to see how it goes first in Thailand,” she told us.

“If it is a wild success, then we might have a look at other markets.”

Ford has no plans to develop a left-hand-drive version of the Territory to expand beyond right-hand-drive South-East Asian markets.

Ford Australia is increasingly relying on Ford’s Thai factories for its cars, with the Fiesta and Ranger set to be joined later this year by the Focus sedan and hatchback from the Asian production hub.

The Ford proprosal to send Territory in the other direction would create small but handy additional volume of Territory for Ford Australia’s Campbellfield factory in Victoria.

The only other significant export market for the Territory is New Zealand, which takes about 1500 Territorys a year.

Last year, Territory was the biggest-selling medium SUV in Australia, achieving 13,866 sales, compared with the second-placed Toyota Kluger’s 11,692.

The facelifted SZ Territory – introducing diesel to the line-up for the first time – gave the only Australian-made SUV new sales impetus when it was launched last year.

This momentum has carried into 2012, with Territory sales up a whopping 52 per cent in the first two months of the year, compared with the same period last year.

If the Territory does go on sale in Thailand, it can be expected to line up with another Aussie-developed SUV now being developed by Ford Australia engineers in Victoria.

Thought to be called Everest, the ladder-chassis 4x4 vehicle – based on the same T6 platform as the Ranger that was launched in Australia last year – is expected to roll down the same Thai production line as the pick-up within the next year or two.

A trickle of Australian-made cars have made their way to Thailand over the years, with Holden cars even assembled there under a licence arrangement until the 1990s.

In 2003, with the start of the free-trade deal, Holden exported small numbers of Commodore to Thailand under Chevrolet Lumina badges.

I think Thailand needs a few home truths told to it about trying to cheat Australia on free trade.
Even if there is no Tariff , a tax of 50% is a tariff by another name, maybe Australia should take
stronger line and explain what will happen if they remain in breach of FTA guidelines, like suspend all imports.

Australia is not looking to dump vehicles into Thailand maybe a few hundred a month,

Yeah, One Ford, the same car regardless of where its built, right?

Tell that to the WT Fiesta, lost the soft touch dash and tyres changed from easy and cheap to source 195/50R15 to expensive 185/55R15, and the wheel itself changed from 4x108 to 4x100.

Our government needs to grow a pair and do something about this, instead of letting aussie products being bent over. Maybe a 50% tax on all Thai utes would be a good start, taxing a few hundred thousand of them a year would help Juliar pay off all the taxpayers money they have squandered.
