We all buy cars based on many criteria - looks, bling, bias, performance, handling, economy, price, deal etc

I'd suggest that technical superiority has a direct impact on performance/handling/economy therefore is a valid criteria to judge a car There is a grey area though, for instance Holden's V8's is technically inferior to Ford V8 yet manages to hold itself up when the rubber hits the road but I don't think it relegates technical superiority to the scrap heap.

On bling, it's a fact of life that it will attract the punter, that's exactly why manufacturers throw the 'reverse osmosis' stuff in, it's exactly why people buy upper spec models etc so I don't see why belittling it because 'Ford don't have it' is valid. If your totally agnostic and your in the market for a widget, both similar priced but brand A has an extra feature that you like, then it will become part of the buying decision, it's up to brand B to build in attractions to compete.

Yes we all buy for different reasons but the Technical aspect of cars gets lost on most people. Haven't heard many say that they bought the car they did because it is more technically superior than something else. Usually its cheaper, nice colour range, perception of economics .... but many do not know whether it is rear wheel, how gear auto, german, Austrian or Korean let alone how things work. Being more technically advanced means that the seats warm up ..... they confuse it with bling.

I have just learnt that to have something to drive long term is more rewarding than bling. That stuff (for me) gets boring in the first few weeks. I want to enjoy the car itself for years. Its a case of not confusing technical superiority as bling ...... thats all But if that gets sales ..... bring it on as long as I still get to drive a car I want rather than play with trinkets!

They've been saying for a while that Ford and GM (Holden as well) need to pull their fingers out and stop worrying so much on power and work on the rest.

I kind of agree, I'd rather see the new FPV GT match said power level, but would much rather see a nicer interior, lightweight construction and things like active suspension and damping, variable LSD, so on.

It's not difficult to have lots of power in such a large car, but making it turn another corner is another sort of black magic really.

Back on topic though, anyone know if the new SS is still using the L98?

Some fair points there mate. When it comes down to it, some features end up not being used after the novelty has warn off as you say.

Tech features that are usable would be adaptive cruise control, proximity warnings, park assist to name a few. If car A had these features and car B didn't, it would be fair to say car A is more technically advanced than car B though.

In Fords case, they needs those trinkets to compete as the Holden marketing machine will push them making the Falcon less desirable purely because it has less bling , features etc

I gather from this rather bold move from holden they intend to " make the lost revenue " up, in the long run when they stop making the cars in 2016, but have to continue supplying parts for the next 10-15 years. And we all know how much a part cost to replace.....

This is why I've said in the past that Holden is arguably taking a greater risk with more
expansive investment in VF Commodore than Ford appears to be taking with the 2014 Falcon.

Mind you, just because Ford may seem to be making less noise about improvements
doesn't mean that Falcon's updates won't be any less comprehensive than VF,
I have a feeling that Ford will get massive bang for bucks this time round...

I bet dynamically on any Aussie road the Territory handles better and is more comfortable... But yes they do need to put a proper latest tech engine in it to really do it justice! But don't for one minute think the Territory is not still the handling/dynamic benchmark for these big SUV style cars this side of a 200k Porsche.

I think the Evoke has raised the bar pretty high in terms of standard kit on the povo pack so to speak off. the interior of the evoke looks pretty bloody impressive too.
