I got my license in Bathurst in 1986 and it didn't matter whether you did the test in manual or auto you could drive either straight away. I did my test in a column shift XD manual taxi (yes, a real taxi and it was manual) because its all that was available. Got my bike license in 92 and all I had to do was some stuff in the RTA carpark and ride up the street and back while the guy watched.

Got my P's in 96 and first car was an Izuzu (NOT a holden!) Gemini. Straight after my P's I went to an EF XR6 until stolen in 2002 (I think) then in 2003 an EF XR8 for 2 years then in 2006 BF F6

got my reds in 2004 while in year 12, got me a twin turbo supra..

now im in a 97 323 astina!

haha.. nah the astina was my first car, got it last year when i got this job!

parents wanted me to be able to save and afford to keep a car running before getting my own..

so, before then i was using the parents magna wagon (nice and grunty, the power was fun for me! 3.5 v6, beat people in it, and could screech when i wanted it to.. i put alot of K's on that).. then the parents bought a maxx sport hatch, nice lil car.. i put the first few thousand k's on it.. used to use it more than my parents did! haha..

then i got this thing, it used to do 10000ks a year on average, like, literally.. then i put 10000 on it in the first month i had it! honestly! haha.. i drove it so much, still do lol..

next up, xr6 hopefully

im still on my greens.. licence suspended from 20th feb till 21st may.. fulls in november now instead of august!

Well, i got this job 40k a year.. i got a $8500 loan from my dad, and paying him back $700 a month, and living off the rest, and at the same time putting away about 500-1000 a month into savings.. itll be paid off by may..

i plan on saving up about 5/6000.. selling my car for as much as i can, and getting a 10-15k loan from the bank to get my next car.. as well as having a few grand backup under my belt if anything happens..

my parents want to move up the coast in a few years, and they arent going to sell the house, so we (sister, me, shane + another friend) can rent it from them.. and at the moment there is no pressure for me or shane to have to move out of the house any time soon.. so i can sit back and save and pay off my new car without having the pressures of huge rent and other commitments like that! (and yes we both pay board) .. but i do plan on moving out sometime in my future, couple years from now or something!

So thats how ill be able to afford my xr6 if everything goes to plan

i guess some explanations for young people in expensive cars can consist of:
1) deal drugs
2) get massive loans
3) work hard and save hard
4) had goals and saved for years
5) got their licence late or lost it, so they are still on their p's when they have this nice car!
6) rich and generous parents
7) inheritance
8) company car
9) lucky to find a deal
10) handed down from a relative..

Ps in 1993.

1993 Corolla - Still in the Family
1996 EF XR6 - 1995 Model bought at an Auction.
1999 Patrol - 1998 Ex-Demo. Diesel and Manual. Great car.
2001 Falcon XR6 - Wanted to get back into an XR6 as I was getting married. I also wanted a car that I could drive hard, but not break.
2004 Territory Ghia - Lemon. Tows the boat, but not a great car. I can't wait until the Lease is up.

I got my P's in November 2004. My first car was a VR Commodore that I had for about a year : I then traded that in for a BA Fairmont which I still have. Currently saving for a BA MKII or BF XR8 ute when I'm off my P's around November this year.

I'm probably the only P-plater that wants an XR8 and not an XR6T :

It's not that hard to afford when you work, save hard, live with the folks and have very few expenses.

P's in December 2006 (18 and 2 months). Clocked up at least 150,000km's since I first got my L's at 16 and 5 months.

When I first had my P's (for about a month) I drove the parents:
VL Commodore
VYII Berlina

but now I have my own BA Futura. I've done 1,000km's since I got it.

I got my Ps in 1999.

I learned to drive on my old mans VR Calais V8 but my daily driver became a hand-me-down VL Berlina L6 (Holden family)

Berlina was traded in late 2000 for a 98 model Toyota Vienta so the v8 became my driver. At 22L/100 and still at school I didnt drive very far. Obviously, I tried to grab the camry-cum-modeltotakeonmaxima/verada when I could.

Got a cadetship beancounting so I splashed out on a 90 model ford Telstar tx5 - brilliant car, built like a tank. It was written off 18 months later by a mate, so I upgraded to a 93 model Tx5 v6 manual - another great car but it was considerably more fragile when compared to the 1990 model car.

It also liked to chew cv joints and had a few rocker cover leaks. It became time for both of us to go our seperate ways and through one reason or another I ended up with a 2003 model TJ2 Magna Sports - which suprisingly is quite a good highway car - and thanks to mitsubishi's shocking resale, I picked it up 18 months old with 40,000 on the clock for $19,000.

My ford blood is still there, although obvious issues relate to a) owning a Mitsubishi and b) going from 2 rwd cars to 4 fwd cars; but rest assured, there have been numerous occassions where I nearly ended up with an XR6t (or an SS, but hey, this is FFAU not LS1). Actually the xr6t option came down to $800 a couple of years ago, but hopefully the next gen Falcon will earn my hard earnt dollars.
