Unfortunately you need to put yourself on top of the picking list.

No one will hire from Geelong (or anywhere else) if there are others closer.

The only way to do that is bite the bullet, take 2-4 weeks holidays and come over to W.A and bash on the doors of the major labour hire mobs.

You may be surprised at what they will do for you if you tell them this story

And bring all your paperwork/evidence with you, and I mean everything, even the volunteer work, signed with a contact number for verification.

Hi All,

Could anyone offer any advise or assistance with how to "get in"...?

I've got unrestricted HC license.
LF & LO forklift.
Senior first aid
References and experience on all the above kit, trucks, buses coaches, forks the lot. Happy to, and can pretty much operate anything.

Issue appears to be is, whenever I ring an agency I've got no "mine experience"... How do I get into the mine to get the experience??
Happy to drive or operate any machinery...

I'll FIFO anywhere is the money is right...

Any help or insight greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Cheers

First mistake.. wanting to get experience but only on a FIFO basis.. you really need to getout there and get on with a contractor.. put in some leg work get the required experience on a mine site.. then with everything youve stated.. you would be a shoe in.

Plenty of work for bus drivers with the proper endorsements.Up here at the Gorgon site on Barrow Island bus drivers with 3+ years actual bus experience can earn up to 180k, but there is still plenty of work around at other sites.
I have put in a reply in this thread about how to get a start, but i know the company I work for (ESS) are always looking for bus drivers

I have previously seen a fair few HWE mining jobs advertising for melbourne FIFO to Wa, but that was many months ago. Maybe checkout their website or leighton contractors same same

Anyone got some advice for a grad mech engineer? I found out last week that I am graduating!

I did some summer work for a mob in QLD and I am still waiting on a call back (so are other students). I had an interview with Xstrata about 3 weeks ago and I am still waiting and have calls from GHD and Arrow Energy coming up too...hopefully one of those works out.

Is there any other way to get a start for a mech eng thats not a graduate program? Any tips would be great. Im happy to go anywhere and dig anything up (ethically and sustainably of course ).

I for one dont have much against getting people in...along as they are qualified.

Seems alot of people want in, they want people but are not prepared to train up employees initially?

What skills to the foreign works have that we dont? Other than an apparent "want" to work. If they are trained professionals (admin, eng, geo etc) then I will be very teed off...but if its cannon fodder then what else can they do...they are big projects.

Pro Tip #308

When your stint ends and your due to fly home on a rainy day, expect the airports to close and to sit on your *** at camp until the sky's clear.

Currently sitting in my room, not allowed to go back to work, not allowed to arrange own transport, all because Moranbah is 0 visibility, and a smash on the Peak Downs hwy means we can't bus to Mackay airport.

Sorry honey, i might make it home tommorow :(

That sux. I have been fogged in a few times at that airport. Not a good feeling when you are all set to get the hell out of there, then to be told you have to stay!

G'Day everyone,

Looking for some advice from anyone who has been through the BHP recruiting process.

I have had my phone screen/interview and have now been invited to attend an assessment centre next month. Just looking for some tips on what will be involved/what to do or NOT to do.

Cheers,
Josh

Anyone know what someone with a background in;

Commercial, Residential, Industrial and Retail Architecture, Drafting, Design, Project management and Project Administration can do in the mines?

I've been racking my brain all day and all I can come up with is; Mechanical CAD & Drafting or Drafting for Mine Surveyor's. But Mechanical CAD is more engineering based.

Any help would be great.

I was calling around a few Geotechnical places in Melbourne yesterday as I handed in my resignation after 7 years at a company.
While talking to a guy over the phone about jobs in Melbourne, I was offered a fly in fly out job as a Geo in WA (unsure of where as yet). The money is huuuge, but, it's 28 days on (2x13days & 2xdays off), the home for 7 days. The roster rotates as 1 month day shift and 1 month night shift.

I spoke to the missus about it and she agrees that the money is way too good to pass up, but, the toll on our relationship would be hard.

How are you guys finding it with FIFO jobs over there?
Many marriage/relationship breakdowns..?

I mean, it all sounds great in dollars and cents, but 2-3 years is a long time to do FIFO and that is what they are offering me..

Advice..?

Cheers

Take the money and run I reckon. In this economy I don't think anyone should pass up the chance to potentially set themselves up.
