It was over $2 a litre a few weeks back in Melbourne (PULP). I think it was $2.04 at my local BP when I put some fuel in.

2.04 would have put the ULP at about 1.88. The disparity is usually around 16c...unless its shell, then they put it to whatever the heck they like. I believe Mobil keep theirs at 16c difference standard.

So 1.98 would put PULP around $2.14 if it was Mobil. But I saw the $1.98 ULP whilst driving past the Shell.... would hate to see what the Shell 98 is.

Hoping this is acute rather than chronic!

It's about 1.59 for 91 down here. Only seems to be the capital cities that are spiking these prices so high.

Is it due to them being locked down so much, so trying to re-coup the money they lost?

I’ve had the same fault prior on another one. New (French brand, Bougicord) sensor was cheap enough, all fitted and back at home base in time for dinner. Now got an ominous “Low Oil Pressure” constant warning.

Thus I retain the divergent topics; petrol price and crisis.

Well that name is a blast from the past, lol, Ullrich, I remember when they first set up in Smithfield in late 80's, the dude running it, think his name was Paul Ullrich, not sure now, but we used a lot of aluminium for our ABB contracts, he turns up at our workshop in a Mercedes with a blown muffler, real prestige and bad impression, I jacke his Merc up and put a full SS sleeve on it, he said , "you just saved me a grand!".... and I said 10% future discount then?...he said ya mate just got me for 30% and you want another 10%......he slipped me a grey nurse, said ave a drink on me. US is a bit different and there has been a bit of debate around that. They are/were effectively self sufficient in contrast to Australia.

We did sign an agreement to buy into the US strategic reserves to "meet our obligations" but not sure what if any effect that has unless they start tapping it.

Anyone who thinks these rising fuel prices WONT put pressure on interest rates has rocks in their heads.

With petrol prices what they are at the moment, and needing to fill the Pony with 98, I've changed the way I buy fuel.

Rather than waiting till I'm near empty, and maybe being forced to go to a nearby petrol station where prices are high, I now do the following...

On my daily travels, which is never the same route or area twice due to the kind of work I do, if I have half or maybe two thirds of a tank left, but happen to pass by a station with highly discounted 98, I'll top up the tank.

More effort I know, filling multiple times, but the end result is I save $$$ at the end of each week.

Even saving $10 a week doing this is still an extra $520 in my wallet each year.

I also use the PetrolSpy app, but this saves driving out of my way just to fill up at the best price.

You can use Mobil fuel lock for that. There is a Mobil here that has stayed $1.77 for 98, so I lock in that price every week. You can only lock for 7 days.

Once you lock in the price you can fill up at any sleven with that price.

For the longest time, I thought it was about using fuel aps to get the best price when your at 1/3 or 1/4 tank
but recently, I’ve discovered that keeping my tank topped when there’s discounted fuel is a better strategy.
Most probably think, “well duh” but for guys like me who only need to fill up every fortnight, it’s different.

Just some back of the envelope calculations about the running costs of EV verses petrol.

Assuming the EV uses energy at the rate of 0.25kW/km and a petrol uses 10l/100km. (Yes, we can argue ad infinitum about how much fuel each of us uses. This is what I typically use with my lead foot.)

Assuming $0.20/kWh for electricity and $2.00l for petrol.

Then, to travel 100km, the EV has cost $5 in fuel and the petrol as cost $20 in fuel.

Assuming the typical motorist travels 16,000km in a year, their fuel cost is $800p.a. for the EV and $3200 for the petrol.

Over the five year life of a typical lease vehicle, the EV is $12,000 cheaper to run (given all of the assumptions above).

From a Total Cost of Ownership perspective, this is starting to get EV near the price of their petrol equivalent. Certainly, the price gap is cheap money to show (or at the very least pretend) that one cares for the planet. With a solid solar PV system on the roof (at least 10kW with export capped at 5kW), the figures look very interesting. (Assuming one has that type of cash lying around.)

Which gets me to the bottom line ... I do wonder what game the oil producers are playing at. Surely, they can see their high prices are pushing people across to alternate fuels. Or maybe they figure they only have a few more years to make cash, so lets screw everyone while we can.
