Yep, I've ordered 2 pairs in the last 2 years (I can claim them on tax ) Serengeti's from The Sunglasses Shop in England. Appx $250 cheaper than here.
This is what Im gonna do as I run my own business. I'll speak to my accountant about this. It's my own stupid fault for accepting and not pushing for a greater discount.

I ordered some sunglasses from zenni.com - prescription, 80% tint, polarised and frame/lenses for $50 odd delivered. They're better than the ones I paid nearly $200 for instore previously.

I know some people are adverse to ordering glasses (or other things for that matter) online from china - so it's just a thought!
That's an interesting option. Put it this way, I won't be going back there again for a check up. Their testing procedures are quality, but I should have been more diligent in getting my prescription and looking elsewhere for a quote.

As a Truck Driver I can claim Sunglasses, as can a few other occupations.
But not regular prescription Glasses.

Not sure how you'd work it as a Business expense though

Well as a drafter/building designer, I run my own company (trustee for a trust) and I sit in front of a computer screen daily. I also drive to see clients.

I may not be able to claim the full amount but a portion of it could be plausible??? I dont know, I will speak to my accountant about it and see what happens.

Teachers can also claim sunnies.

We get royaly rooted by optometrists, even with a fund you always end up paying for bloody tinting or polarisation. Then you need a week or two to collect em.

Got new regular glasses in Korea and paid $45. They were ready in 35 min. He didn't even need the script, was able to read my old lens and make new ones.

having no other option internet/home phone wise, out in the sticks here we are stuck with telstra, to say it sucks is an understatement currently none of our services work and have not work properly for 2-3 weeks, this is the second time it has happened in 6 months, this is in a household where mum needs internet for uni and dad needs it for work, at the moment the phone works but is still fuzzy and the internet is outta action (on mobile hotspot) telstra has been out 3 times and sfa has happened to say I'm annoyed is an understatement, mum is ****ed as well as dad, needless to say the whole house is really annoyed, but as we have no other option, we have to put up with it.....oh and each time they come out "that'll be $120 thanks":nothap py

120? Have the issues been on your side of the box or Telstra's? If you are having issues and they are charging you to fix them I would not be happy.

Research who the TIO is, see if they can help.

If I was still working as a tax-agent, I'd claim them for you. The ATO devotes a lot of time & effort (ie our money) to publishing useless advice, most of it wrong.
What they don't like you to know is that the majority of deductions are still made under the general deductibility provisions. There is a slightly different test applicable to businesses.

So the basic test is: Is it "necessarily incurred" (in the production of assessable income, AND
Is it NOT "private & domestic" in nature.
The ATO is always trying to tell you their version, notwithstanding that the courts have clearly enunciated it year, after year, after year.

One of the ATO's favourite tricks is to aim for a compromise based on some spurious distinction. They also make up their own little rules, and then apply them as if they have some legal basis.
They claim that prescription sunglasses are deductible as they constitute protective clothing, but clear prescription glasses are not as they relate to a private medical condition. BOTH explanations are hogwash.

In reality, both clauses tend to overlap, but still need to be considered separately. The best example is clothing.
Everybody must wear clothes, so there needs to be something "special" or "specific" about them that is connected to (or as the courts love to say "has a nexus") with your work. So hi-vis gear for a trucky, a suit for an accountant, a tracksuit for a phys-ed teacher, would all pass the first test.
To NOT be considered private and domestic, the courts have held that it must be either highly specialised (which includes uniforms and PPE) OR of a higher volume due to extraordinary requirements. So the suits I was expected to wear as a corporate accountant, were not extraordinary. However in the most significant court case the claims made by the lady employed as private secretary to the wife of the governor were UPHELD, because she was required to dress to a high standard AND change outfits several times a day.

In the case of a professional truck driver, the claim (for either) would hinge on whether they were specifically required for truck-driving and whether that requirement was extraordinary compared to your private and domestic use. Assuming we're talking about some form of myopia, such that you could live your life and handle most jobs without the glasses, I would argue that the glasses are deductible.

Got the Mrs a new Mirage late last year. In my name so all ownership details refer back to me.

Get a text msg:

"Your Mirage is due for its 6 month service, please call the service dep to make a booking".

Ignored it, must be a mistake.

Then the letter arrives... Lets move on from the fact that the first 2 lines in the address are my PO Box details - then the next 2 lines are for the residential address...

"A reminder that your Mirage is due for its 6 month / 7500km service. Please call the service dept blah blah blah".

Ok, time to make a phone call me thinks - I recall that the new Mirage had yearly / 15K services....

The nice lady explained that it was not compulsory... that it was just 'an oil and filter change and a quick going over. In and out in 45 minutes'.

Ok... I pretend I actually believe that they have my best interests in mind and continue the conversation.

Oh, the price?? Exactly the same as Mitsubishi's capped price program ($250)... Shall I book you in Mr B???

Ummmm I'll speak to the better half and get back to you - after all, it is her car.

Ok... I hate how they try to take people for a ride...

1) The Dealership stopped being an authorised Mitsubishi dealership a few months after my purchase. They no longer have any factory backing or support for warranty work / updates etc.

2) The capped price program includes 12 months roadside assistance (not sure if they tout that it's 'free'). Where is my discount for not getting that? I certainly don't need 2 x roadside assistance now do I?

3) If I was to have an interim service (that isn't needed IMO) that was just a lube job and a quick going over $250 is a bit rich... My local mechanic will do it for 1/3rd the price and I can actually be in the workshop and watch him do it while having a friendly chat....

Wonder how many people they suck in????

I still get messages from Essendon Honda asking me to take in my Fiesta for a service when I had it done twice while I was working there lol.

Then when it was in for a service the service receptionist rang me while I was standing in front of her to remind me my car was due in for a service today.

Whats that, about $355 an hour... less the cost of the oil and filter.
You should have jumped at a deal like that

Hyundai offer the same type of interim service - but they will change oil and filter cheaper than i can buy it.

Price does make me suspicious if they are even doing the work though

i worked with this guy that had worked for sci fleet mitsubushi in the past and told me they hired all these un-ticketed filipino guys as service mechanic's and pay them minimum wage

they wouldn't even drain the oil properly. and then would blow out the old air filter with an airgun and wack it back in. and! reuse second hand parts, clean them up and charged people for new ones.

dealerships are fantastic!

thats why theres not many jobs around because they bring in labourers from asia to do qualified jobs.

yea it is. illegal.

dodgy dealerships.

and if they aren't hiring labourers on 457 visa's they are filling there workshops with "apprentices" and paying them 8 dollars an hour. the tight asses.

my brothers a panelbeater and worked for this place 4 yrs ago, and the boss let go of 4 panelbeaters and hired apprentices, to save costs,

theres nothing wrong with hiring apprentices, but they weren't training them. they had no intention of training them. they just wanted to use them and used the apprenticeship to get away with play $8/hr

then before the 3 month probation period was up. they would sack them all and hire another few.

the snakes

HMMMM...
When I started my locksmith apprenticeship you could not get any access
to training or courses without the apprenticeship. Also, a fully qualified locksmith had to employ you in
order to gain qualification.
A few years later, a large employer along with TAFE began to offer six month
pre-apprenticeship and diploma courses weakening the skill level and undermining
qualified tradespeople, effectively flooding a once highly regarded occupation with
semi-skilled alsorans, most of which are happy to work at award wages.

Changing the subject for a minute, something that ****** me off, you are driving on a multi lane road......... the bloke in front of you moves into the turn lane just as you are about to get near this joker he swings outwards well into the lane he left asif his driving a semi............ the dude is not going fast, its not a tight corner, it dosnt matter if they are driving a mini or a big car they can't manage to go around a corner at normal speed without endangering others the total and utter halfwits...... I had to get that off my chest...... sorry for the rant.

In the same vein, I was travelling at 110kph on the highway between Pt Pirie and Pt Augusta not long ago and up ahead of me about 400m was a big dual cab looking thing, F150/dodge Ram/Chev whatever they are... pulling a trailer. suddenly he stands on the picks THEN indicates left to pull off the road into a gate!; not back off then slowly reduce speed, but stands on the brakes hard. So now I'm closing on him at a great rate of knots, but luckily it was a long straight with no oncoming traffic, so I pulled out onto the other side of the road thinking I'd hold my speed and get on by.

As I got to about 120-30m, suddenly this dropkick swings right completely into the right lane and all but stops giving me nowhere to go, as he swings left, forcing the biggest emergency stop I've had to do in a very long time. The gate BTW, was at least 8m from the edge of the bitumen over an open grassy verge so there was plenty of room for him to pull straight off and get him and his car trailer off the road at an angle to go through the wide farmers gate instead of where he ended up at 90deg to the gate with his trailer half way out into the north bound lane, where he left it while he got out to open the gate.

GRRRRRRRRRR...........

Unfortunately this is quite common. In the left turn lane, swing slightly right just before the turn.

Perhaps they've watched too many Rally vids and think that's the 'Scandinavian flick '

I drive this road everyday and what you are describing is a common occurrence, had a couple of women killed out there just recently in a 3 vehicle pile up.......getting to be a bad road, needs to be duplicated with another pair of lanes to cope with the volume of traffic at least to Port Augusta.

however the dukes highway between bordertown and tailem bend almost got me and my better half just recently.

passing lanes every 5 kilometres, nice straight, mostly wide, well repaired road, so should be easy right?.......nope, B doubles travelling in convoy, saving fuel in the slipstream, 3 and 4 at a time at 100 KPH about 10 feet apart, comes to an overtaking lane I pull over and they won't split for anybody never lone an old couple towing a van at 90 KPH.

3 times we had to stop in the overtaking lane to let these idiots through.

I've changed my mind on truckies.......they will kill someone out there soon, bloody dangerous idiots are behind the wheels now, not just a few but the majority are bad.........it has shifted to minority good drivers.

number plates obscured by muddy water so no chance of reporting the behaviour.

dealerships are fantastic!

thats why theres not many jobs around because they bring in labourers from asia to do qualified jobs.
They were doing that at the Honda dealership I worked at, they had a few foreign imports/students working as "lube mechanics", theoretically they were only supposed to be doing minor servicing but they ended up doing everything when we were under the pump.

The apprentice thing is the oldest trick in the book, where I was working after Honda we ended up having 3 qualified auto electricians and 7 apprentices, and there were two "vehicle body builder" apprentices without any vehicle body builder tradesman.

When I started I was being taught by a 3rd year apprentice, then I was teaching a 1st year apprentice when I was a 3rd year apprentice, blind leading the blind.

They complained when I picked up my teacher's bad habits and they complained when my first year picked up my bad habits.

the snakes
Thats common all around dude, local butcher did that with three apprentices, except they were keeping them around until third year then cya later, new first year starts.

Doesn't matter if its illegal because there is no one enforcing the law, apprenticeship board are a bunch of useless ******. There is a reason why most of us younger Gen Y aren't doing apprenticeships, I regret doing mine, should have thrown in the towel after Honda instead of sticking with it and becoming a qualified auto electrician in the end.

i know mate, it is maddening to drive on the road with these boofheads fairdinkum,
im in the northern burbs of Melbourne and i will admit there are some decent drivers, but bloody hell there's a lot of bad ones, and this is my problem with speed cameras, they do absolutely zip to show drivers they are doing it wrong out in suburbia , im sure some of these motorists just don't have a bloody clue, we need more patrols driving around just picking on bad driving , they can explain to the drivers what they are doing wrong and give them a warning, i believe this does make a difference.
In all honesty sometimes after having close calls with these nobs, i on occasions have thought about selling the cars and going by train ..... and i bloody hate trains !
it was only last year i was struck/sideswiped while stationery at a set of lights, fine weather , plenty of room , and no speed involved, it is at times scary to be on the road.

Driving into Yarraman this morning only to be confronted by a mindless female driver passing a truck coming straight at me - double lines and all!
It's not the first time either. :(
If people want to kill themselves, fine, go ahead and do it; just don't include me in your plans.
