From memory it was Harold Holt who heavily reduced Opposition access to national security briefings, effectively consolidating his position at the top and perhaps instigating the most formal* phase yet of pitting Australian against Australian. A trickle down was inevitable.

No sauce for their pies!

More seriously, who believes these two sets of bolters (the Kiwi-bound and Queensland lovers) are the only ones? Or just the only ones caught?

*I note, before others raise it, this overlooks the historical conflict between colonial and indigenous Australians.

The other side of the coin is that having harsh penalties will mean people won’t get tested if they are doing the wrong thing which puts a greater risk into the situation.

As much as you would like to see them in stocks in the town square I think it is the wrong thing to do. Victoria faced this situation last year.

I reckon QLD have probably dogged a bullet in this one. Looks like they were late in the infectious stage. Hope NSW is lucky too

similar but not exactly the same, no prison for this border offence,

https://7news.com.au/news/crime/qld-...-lie-c-2600418

IMO with this case, These young women got severely dealt with publicly on social media, due to the media revealing who they were! Yet before and after this case, every other offender gets protected and none of their identities were ever publicly exposed. where is the fairness or balance of reporting here?

There should be more severe consequences for these border/ lock down breaches, it just might deter some, probably not all.
Prison? Probably not enough room in our prisons for this at the moment though.
and yes IMO there would be a heap more who have done the border/ lockdown breach, they just haven't been caught.

Id say a decent fine and some community service would be about it...Id like to agree with prison but I dont think that is really going to help anyone.

Repossession of assets if sizeable fine cant be paid.

Hard to follow the logic. The lady got tested because her husband needed a negative test for a job application? A person, who broke the law, and lied on the declaration form, decided to voluntarily go for a test?

If they wanted to be sneaky they could have crossed at Texas, about 1hr east of Gundy.

From Queensland Health Minister:
Quote:
“I don’t want to jump to conclusions before we have all the facts, specifically if they had a travel declaration,” she said.

“The husband was here with a new job, and we know that is one of the grounds that people can travel, but I don’t have the details so I’m not going to judge anyone’s behaviour until I know all the facts.”

The state’s Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said she had not granted the couple an exemption to travel, so it was up to police to investigate whether they had been given an exemption through any other channels.
It is a strange scenario, so there could be more to it.

The other thing in their opinions re Dans Gov saving grace is they say the other side is useless, then they think for a mo over the last 1yr and half and eat their words loling.......
Live long and prosper fellas, I sure know I wouldn't be sitting back looking at things the way you do and I'm sure not alone.
Look, I have friends and rellies that live in Melbourne (and we need to recognise, of course, that Melbournites are feeling the pain more so than us in regional areas) but I don't know anyone that is as annoyed as your associates with what is going on. Sure, they'd all prefer that they weren't subject to restrictions, but as T3rminator says, my experience (noting not a great sample size) is that people appreciate that the alternatives are not any better and that short term pain is an investment into the future.

I wonder if our sample is biased because we tend to mix with those that have similar views to ourselves?

I've not once said that my views are representative of the community as a whole. How can I when my sample size is so small? And I'm sure there are a lot of people who are over it. I just wonder as to what the 'real' sentiment amongst the community, as a whole, is?

For me, the restrictions don't have much of an impact. Working from home one week out of two means that when further restrictions are imposed, there's little impact for me. And the allowance to get out and exercise allows me to do what I would normally do anyway. I've had to make some changes, but they are small and impact me very little. I'm comfortable (not happy) to make the sacrifice to see that we don't end up with the situation we see in many other countries where significant numbers of people fall ill or die from this pandemic.

If you don't think that's worth it, FTE, then that's fine. Just don't assume that everyone feels the same way you do about it.

Europe passes 47M cases;
South America passes 30M cases;
Africa passes 5M cases;

Only -

Probably after realising she'd been at one of the locations highlighted by contact tracers, where visitors had been ordered to isolate

cheers mate, not really assuming thats for sure originally at all just going by those I listen to down there that I respect and know well.
I'm sure others have opposite pov like you say depending who you liase with.
Nothing like being careful thats for sure and as for yourself being regional your in a far better world than the city folks, infact you wonder why not just close the CBD as has been mentioned in the past.
My general pov is the lockdowns, this one is ott for such low numbers but I expect the so called powers above looking back whats occurred previously feel its best to close the gate not to trust the rank and file for things got/get out of hand yet its the systems in place and those involved who have caused most of the harm and failed right.
Again our numbers are no where near whats occured outside our waters.
Its control gone mad.

I do wonder if it is possible to split metro melb into zones, east - central - west, so that if there is an outbreak in one zone, then we put a temp border around that single zone. They'd have to work out all the roads that would require monitoring, quite a big task given its all interconnected, and you will still get people screaming "you can open the shop across the road but I can't".

Although, even if we had such a system, it probably would have been no good for the scenario we just had i.e. cases had spread to too many different areas before people got tested and cases confirmed.

I do feel we are one bad super spreader event away from a calamity, regardless of what state or political party you align with. With covid I am glass half empty, mainly because of what has happened to people I know in other parts of the world.

Doesn't look like it now. Her husband tested negative first time, then positive second time, which indicates it was towards end of the infectious period. Who knows. We were quick to call for a lynching but it may have been legit afterall i.e. relocating.

But surely you realise that "our numbers are nowhere near what's occurred outside our waters" because of the severity and commitment to our lockdowns? Australia's tactic is to put out spotfires immediately because they quickly grow into big fires and become too big to eliminate, as has occurred in other countries. The only reason we're able to reap the benefits of being a largely-uninfected country is because of those lockdowns.

It's the same concept as people saying seatbelts and crumple zones should be removed from new car designs as they're no longer needed, all the while pointing at the number of crashes versus the number of people who died in those crashes as proof. The only reason people often survive serious crashes is because of those features and removing them will result in more people dying in crashes instead.

Without the lockdowns, "such low numbers" very quickly becomes high numbers.

There could also be a couple of little other considerations.

We live on a very big Island with a pop of about 25 million.

Compared to, say Germany with 83 million.

I like how you’ve parked the map so that Austria is on top of Hahndorf.

This absolute beast “Delta” strain has me worried. It’s so sneaky that it’s not even transmitting as we were told to expect. Probably waiting until we let our guard down.

Very little information offered today on the “four new locally acquired cases” in Victoria, as in, were they random or close contacts, were they in isolation at all?

Chairman's Award: Chairman's Award - Issue reason: Your outstanding contributions to this community have not gone unnoticed. IN my view you are a worthy recipient of the (rarely used) Chairman's Award.

I have to laud the “silver lining” positivity of NSW’s Health Minister:

I am alpha and omega....when we get to omega is it game over?

All part of the same family. They are concerned with upstream (who passed it to them) but not as concerned with down stream (who they may pass on to) as they have been isolating. Still a mystery how they caught it, but there is a casual link with one of the shopping centres on the exposure site.

Only change is mask back on for outdoors.

Federal assistance will cease tomorrow because metro melb will no longer be regarded as a hotspot. Which raises an interesting question, if when there is a next outbreak, will state gov be more inclined to let the cases run for weeks on end because there will be federal assistance? What is the federal criteria for a "hotspot"?
