How do those prices compare to the median house price of those years in the capital cities?

Would be interesting to see, as a percentage of the median house price and then comparing it to the median house price today as a percentage and it puts into perspective what cars that would put on the table for you in 2024 if you did the equivalent.

Median house price in Melbourne in 1979 was $38,000

So that Commodore SL/E was around 30% of the median house price when it was new,

If you look at what 30% of the Melbourne median house price buys you car wise these days in 2024, gives you a $278,000 budget to spend on your car which buys something a bit nicer than a VFII SS Commodore

Helping my longest-term customer do a tip run this afternoon, who's now vision impaired, he started asking about my cars, in particular the "blue Falcon". Of course, the topic brough up comments about inline 6's, which led onto a car he used to own, a BMW E36 328i.

I remember that car very well because when I first started working for them, I would always take out my earphones to listen to the exhaust on start-up, a beautifully rich BMW inline 6 rasp, then as it drove off down the street. It always made me smile.

It also made me smile when my customer spoke about the car today, clearly it left an impression on him. That particular E36 328i was a sedan in Arctic Silver Metallic with the M-sport suspension, wheels and body enhancements. He proudly told me of doing 250 kph in that car and of how well it drove. He replaced that car with two first gen BMW X3's, followed by a string of Subaru's. What we universally agreed on was how BMW are not what they used to be.



Naturally, I had to see if a 142 kW 2.8-litre 328i could do 250 kph, just.......................



Compare that to a modern 4-cylinder 328i, faster but no thanks...............

What’s the speedo error on one of them, be 5-10%… so not really 250kmh?
A bit like my old GSXR1000, read around 10% fast. Went thru the 1/4 traps at 240k on the dash but it was measured at 135mph or around 220.
Had it at an indicated 299knh a couple of times but reality was around 270kmh. Good for bragging rights I suppose.

I also like Jay Emm, seems to have a tendency for reviewing luxury barges which is good.

I looked at one of those for my first car - E36 328i.

1990s is peak BMW I reckon, E34, E36, E38 and E39

That’s your peak pref Franco being your time mind you they are good times at BM but I vouch for a bullet proof E21 328i manual.
What a beast never missed a beat thrashed the hell out of that 6 handled and went like the clappers.
Trim quality as well was very those days and going into the series you fav started saving costs.

Researching for a post, I once again came across this video. I've always loved how the naturally aspirated Barra sounded, especially in FG spec when they put some effort into tuning the tone of the engine. Just listen to it scream in the opening clip, then again at 1.29. I also love the in-car sound of the 1 - 2 shift.





I always lament not ordering the Turbo 16 years ago, but then I drive the car again and listen to the old Barra scream and all is well with the world.

The post I was researching was about the EcoBoost engine Ford used in the Falcon. While a fine engine and way better than many would have expected, the sound didn't have reach the same high for me.

Short review on the EL GT.................



Got to admit there are some to be said about old fashioned throttle response (as a real linkage to the engine) and proper all-round visibility. She's slow, but that Windsor sounds sooooo nice.

Clarkson on two of my favorite cars, the Jaguar XFR and E60 BMW M5....................



The Jaguar XFR is kinda like a distant cousin to the FG FPV GTE, FGX XR8 and XR8 Sprint. 5.0 Supercharged V8 goodness, 6-speed ZF gearbox, freight train performance and subtle under-the-radar styling.

This was one of the earliest Jags fitted with the 5.0 engine, as such, they hadn't quite nailed the sound like the later versions did.

As a Ford man, I'm supposed to hate the Monaro....................but I don't, in fact I love them.

While I'm not a regular viewer of his content, I do love this review of the Monaro VXR.



Interesting to hear comments on that gearbox. This was well before the word "Tremec" was regarded as a good thing. And that's because the Tremec Holden used in those cars was the truck version of the T56. It wasn't until Ford and FPV renovated the design to make a specific version of the T56 that Tremec became a desirable thing. The later TR6060 version that both Ford/FPV and Holden/HSV took that to another level.

Mine are no EL GT but the Honda and IS200 literally are like stepping into another world.

Tight, low, good visibility...just so different to modern cars.

Its hilarious when I take them out in them and they think they are fast....just having alot of fun in them TBH.

I too like that lexus engine...been looking to much at IS F's recently.

I like the way they do the reviews but I hate that guys voice, gives me the shits how he talks and holds the end of sentences like thhhhiiiiisssssssss.

Also too much filler, its like watching insiders on ABC.

It was a sad time in the 1990s with Australian 'performance cars', 0-100 in 8 seconds and 15.8 1/4 mile

Yeah, he's very stilted in his presentation. For the most part, the older channel (PDRIVE) is generally all about the sound of the car being tested, while his new channel has a larger speaking role.

Yeah the Coupe.
For examples of both models on the market atm, the Z4M offers better value once mileage and age is taken into consideration.
But I think the M3 is a safer buy due to it being a hero car, if you know what I mean. Instantly recognisable, easier to sell, possible better resale down the track.
Similar to choosing an FPV GT/P over the GTE or a VF2 SS over a V8 Calais.

I know what you mean. Wasn't sure if you just wanted to experience the engine or buy it as something to keep and potentially appreciate in value. The first gen Z4 was/is an acquired taste stylistically, so the E46 would be easier to sell as it's got a timelessness to it.

For me, the interest in the E46 M3 and Z4M lies solely in the engine, I don't think there has been a better inline 6 before or since. I'd be happy with either, the Z4 being a newer gen product would have the slight edge............and no SMG.

But, the idea of buying such an old BMW makes me hesitate way more than if I was shopping a Falcon of similar vintage. And all the things that go wrong with them are the expensive bespoke M-car items. For me, its probably safer to admire from afar rather than run the mechanical gauntlet, which is probably why I keep watching these videos..................







I also strongly suspect that if I did buy a M3 or Z4M, I would be left wanting that CSL package. I know you can buy the carbon intake aftermarket, but they just don't sound the same, they lack that final layer of polish that the factory setup commands. And even if they weren't rare in Australia, I couldn't afford or justify spending $200,000+ on an old BMW with 100,000 kms on the clock.

Oh yeah the engine plays a huge part in it. If my sole purpose was just for the engine alone, I’d be content in settling for an E36 M3 with the 3.2 and 6 speed manual. Not the same but I imagine the characteristics and feel are near identical but the purchase price is a bit less.
I’d still be happy with an E36.

$60k will buy a decent E46 and most on the market appear to have the big ticket items either checked out or done.
Don’t speak too soon though, my 2017 VF2 SS Redline has recently developed lifter tick. I assume it’s taken the cam out as well.
So with a tune, exhaust and intake I don’t expect any change from $10k. Could probably do S54 big end bearings, cap bolts and Vanos for less than that .

Considering what other hero models of the time are going for now - any manual 911 but specifically Turbo and GT2/3, Evo 6 TME, VT GTs 300kw, R34 GTR, the M3 is pretty good value considering.

The old EGAS ute literally could do 100km/h in first gear
I reckon a ZF behind these would have been brilliant though.

Intake/cam/exhaust was needed to waken them up a little.

I did manage to get just shy of 130rwkw in the AU EGAS work ute.
The LPG mixer restriction was a big issue ... I was going to try the Airod variable mixer in it ... but never got around to it.

Good solid work vehicle the AU .... was better than the BF EGAS ute I found.

The full spectrum of Miami noises in this video, from the barking exhaust to the delicious supercharger noise, all accompanied by lashings of tyre squeal. That track was just too small for the big Falcon GT though.



I will concur with the reviewers comment about the worst aspect of the car is going slow, these engines really do love working the mid to top end of their rev range.

New Mustang is well received.
Unfortunately it will probably go unnoticed and live in the shadows of something with leaf springs and a lethargic diesel in this market.

While the Darkhorse is a continuous model for US customers, its considered a limited release for Australia so they are basically all pre-sold for the Australian market. It's to the point where Ford don't even have the Darkhorse available to Build and Price on their crappy website. The only way to get one now would be to hope for a cancelled order, no doubt with an obscene dealer markup, or from the inevitable flippers trying to cash in on those who missed out on an allocation. So much for the Mustang being the "affordable" or "obtainable" sports car.

Video's of the updated Porsche 911 have started to surface, the Carrera models now fitted with a hybrid system. The combustion engine is all new, going from 3.0 to 3.6 in the process. The new engine also ditches the twin turbo setup, replaced by an electrically assisted single turbo, the electric motor instantly spooling the turbo to eliminate lag. Sadly, that hollow metallic howl is gone, in its place a deeper synthesized bark that could be from any six-cylinder engine.
