Imo if your car isnt set up for towing it shouldnt be allowed to tow and thats that! Like us truck drivers people towing caravans should have to pull into weigh station to get wieghed. We have to have special licences so should people towing caravans! Disco1986 if i was allowed to do more than 100 then i would but the law states that a truck can only do 100 in an 110 zone! People in caravans p**s me off " Ive worked my whole life so if i want to be a danger on the road i can cause i got nowhere fast to be" thats their mentality and as for fuel cost if you can afford to buy the caravan you can afford the fuel to do the speed limit

When I got my licence you were not allowed to tow a trailer above 80Km/h but they seemed to have changed that now.

Maybe, thankfully, these people who go a bit slower are driving to their abilities and their cars abilities.
It's one thing to be doing 100kays but if you have to brake or swerve, especially with a caravan, and yes I've towed a few vans from time to time.
And like most others here I hate getting held up too but you just have to wait unfortunately. I know there's nothing worse than been last in the line of about 10 cars held up behind a van but thats life, wait for the overtaking lane.

More evidence "speed-limit conditioning" is seen in this thread.

Future: You enter a remote highway bearing a (//) sign.

Question: What will be your travelling speed, since an absolute speed limit will no longer apply.

The answer of course will be 'variable', the way it should be.

there are actually still some speed restrictions when towing in place in Tasmania and WA.
From http://www.caravanandcampingsa.com.a...2&parent2id=96

"Tasmania.

90km/h when towing a caravan or trailer.

Western Australia.

90 km/h if total weight of trailer or caravan exceeds 750 kg.

100 km/h it total weight of trailer or caravan is below 750 kg. "

Another restriction (don't know what legality this has but it could be used to give liability in case of an accident):
"Motorists should remember that in some cases motor vehicle manufacturers place speed restrictions on a vehicle when towing over a certain mass. Ford only permits 100km/h if the load is less than 1200 kg. At 1600 kg this drops to 90km/h. The speed further reduces until at 2300 kg, 80km/h is the maximum. Holden takes a similar approach but also ties the vehicle speed to the type of towing equipment fitted. Spending a few minutes reading the trailer towing section in the owners manual is highly recommended."

and ...
I've seen mention that some caravan manufacturers specify a max towing speed and exceeding that speed could void warranty.

try the great ocean road most beautiful scenic drive in oz' but if you get the long end of the straw and get stuck behind a caravan after caravan it sucks!

caravans if they used to get a group of cars banked up behind them, they would usually pull over and let them get past!

Doesnt seem to happen anymore seen caravans doing 20kmh under the speed limit on single line highways and people ovetaking them in dangerous spots, due to frustration!

caravans blocking and holding up traffic ,cause ACCIDENTS!!!

No they dont cause the accidents MORONS overtaking on blind corners cause the accidents, and usually the sort of people who drive like that wana overtake the car in front of them regardless of the speed they may be doing.

Is it realy worth killing yourself or other people just to get somewhere half an hour earlier?

Just about every major crash on our highways are caused by people overtaking in ridiculous situations, because they were frustrated........

Like you say the great ocean road is a scenic drive, so why not take in the views when your stuck behind a caravan, instead of trying to kill yourself overtaking it...???

Apparently the burn very extremely well

At least there are those little bays for them to pull into every so often so you can pass

Default Get used to them

I have recently taken a job manufacturing caravans in newcastle, and have been told that companies like jayco are producing around 150 per week and they only have about 45% of the market, so approximately 20,000 caravans are produced in australia every year i think. And predictions are that caravan sales are expected to increase by 60% by the year 2010.
So sorry to disapoint people, and i get just as frustrated getting stuck behind them myself, but it looks like we better get used to it cause its only going to get worse.
Maybe all highways up the coast should have a designated extra caravan lane, just like they do with bus lanes in sydney LOL

It's not the point that caravan swing from side to side when you tow them .......more the case that YOUR car isn't set up or loaded wright .
I tow a horse float of ovewr the place and I make Sure I can tow it the wrigth way and if I can see someone trying to past me on any road I'll move over or pull over top let them past as I want to do 100 in a 110 zone with 2 ton behide me .

But as for these grey no-mads that we get going north this time of year to get away from the cold ,they are just a pain on the road as they travel in groups of 6 or more and follow each other that close that you have to past them all at once instead of picking one at a time and they all do 75-80 in 110 zones so you can see why I hate them .And when you travel the state as I do and it's nothing to do 900 kays a day to get to the work site .....it just craps them

Sorry I think the sould be banned .......or you need more than a car licence to tow these things

For a speed-limit conditioned caravaner wouldn't that be infinity or the speed of light, whichever is faster?
